Your handle is common sense. How 'bout using some?

Mike, great being here with you today on this rainy day. Who do you see winning the wpial football championship in 3A? Do you think that winner can challenge the eastern side of the state? Will we see a reply of last years 3A state championship?
Mike White
11:39
As the Eagles once sang: "You can't hiiiiiiide .... Mark Lyons eyes." Mark Lyons eyes are that of a championship coach - again. It would be one of the biggest upsets in history of WPIAL if Central Valley didn't win it. And they have to be favorites to win state. Others from the east? Wyomissing, Scranton Prep, Montoursville. Don't know what's up with Neumann-Goretti yet. Philly Catholic League team I think only has two games scheduled.

Favorites in each class for boys hoops?
Mike White
11:42
I like some hoops talk, Hoops Fan. Thanks. Upper St. Clair 6A, New Castle 5A, Lincoln Park or Quaker Valley 4A, 3A I'm not sure, 2A OLSH, 1A I'm not sure.

When I watch a Derrick Davis or Donovan McMillon, and past kids of this ilk, sometimes it can be misleading I think as to projecting how good they will be at next level if you only catch maybe one or two of their games; seems to me they go 3/4 speed against inferior teams almost like they are thinking ”this isn’t even really challenging to me”. By no means am I criticizing them, would never do that to teenagers. Just an observation. Fair or not?

Over the years, I think I've learned it's not really fair to say a kid is not playing hard. There are players who might no look like they're going all out because maybe they're a "glider." I don't know if you know what I mean? When Derrick Davis runs, he kind of glides. Doesn't mean he's not running hard.

We need more soccer talk who will win the WPIAL matches
Mike White

The team with more goals.

Good morning Mike why wasn’t there on the app under the high school passing rushing and receiving leaders for Friday night big game for my cavaliers Friday at home against pine Richland
Mike White
11:45
I have no idea what you're talking about. Pine-Richland played North Hills Friday.
WPIAL Lifer
11:46
Can't argue about Pryor for sure. Overall Jeannette was loaded and might have won w/o him. Had 3-4 other D-1 players on a 2A team! Steve Breaston came to mind for me. He ran like everyone else was wearing cement cleats.
Mike White
11:46
Breaston is a good one. Good one by you WPIAL Lifer. I still call Breaston one of the most exciting players in the history of the WPIAL. I loved watching him in high school.

you talking high school hoops yet??? Hearing bishop Canevin is going to be a force in A. Lost only 1 senior from a team that made in to the WPIAL semi finals and season cut short in the PIAA quarterfinals
Mike White
11:49
Good point, Big stu. Yes, I think Bishop Canevin will be a team to watch in Class 1A. Most definitely. Gino "the genius" has things looking upward for the Crusaders. I think he learned everything from his old college roommate, T.J. McConnell.

Is Sto- Rox the real deal?
Mike White
11:51
Hard to say, Jim. They are obviously good and obviously one of the top four teams in 2A. They moved up from Class 1A and haven't missed much of a beat. I haven't seen them, but I would guess they could play with anyone in Class 2A, but I think Beaver Falls is still head and shoulders above everyone. Although this McGuffey team intrigues me.

And I think, over time, Dax Miller's entire playoff run last year for Avonworth will be on a short list of greatest individual playoff performances, if it isn't already. He really took that team title.
Mike White
11:51
Good point, WPIAL lifer. He was tremendous last season.
Common Sense
11:51
I am sure all of these schools will be honest about a possible case at their schools on a semifinal game, or a championship game. If they are not reporting now, why would they later on?
Mike White
11:53
You have no idea if schools aren't reporting cases. But why in the world would you not have playoffs when you just played seven weeks of games and how many teams had to stop because of cases in WPIAL? Maybe 10 or so? Out of more than 120.

What do you think about Lincoln Park going deep in the playoffs if there is a season ?  thanks
Mike White
11:55
You are talking basketball right? Because 12 Lincoln Park athletes play football at Western Beaver. In basketball, they move up to 4A. I don't know if that will be a big, big difference for them, though. They return some talented players. They will definitely challenge for title in 4A.
11:57
OK, good stuff today. Lots of questions. Thanks, everyone. We'll be on next Tuesday at 11 a.m. Everyone, be good.
