Yes, I like the eight team format now that there are six classifications. One of the problems is the state playoffs. WPIAL teams in 1A, 2A and 3A start the state playoffs a week later than 4A, 5A and 6A. There would either be a bye at the start of the WPIAL playoffs for 1A, 2A and 3A or a bye after the WPIAL playoffs. Coaches can be a complaining bunch. They probably won't like byes.

Sorry Mine - my comment wasn't quite clear, I didn't mean immediately after local bracket.  Just at some point in state bracket.  Just my 2 cents but I'd love to see 2 public as match up for states in most classes but that likely won't happen. 2A and 3A it's likely though I'd say.

Many would like to see separate championships for public and private. Not going to happen. At least in near future.

On the D7 Champs...  Since the PIAA state championships have existed, there have been 118 football championship games played across all classifications.  A team from the WPIAL has taken the field in 85 of those 118 contests (winning 41).  According to a quick scan (so maybe not totally accurate), we appear to have the most appearances and victories of any district in the state.  While some of those schools out east might be heavy favorites, I think the WPIAL is the toughest district to make it out of in PA.
Mike White
11:32
Well the WPIAL should have the most championship appearances. By far, it is the biggest district.

Should South Park had gotten a better seed since they shared the interstate title?
Mike White
11:36
At first, I said yes Mitch. I thought South Park should've gotten the 7, simply because they tied for the conference championship. I would've put Freeport 8. Then again, both Freeport and South Park played Aliquippa in non conference games. Huh. They both lost to Aliquippa by 52-0. So is there really much difference. But I would've still put South Park 7 because they did tie for a conference title.

Any chance Freeports D slows down the train and moves on?

Please get this Freeport fan some help.

The problem with 8 teams in 1A and 2A (and is a problem in 3A) is there are more than 8 teams worthy of a playoff spot.  There aren't 16 unfortunately but maybe 10-12.  It doesn't hurt anybody to let these kids play one more game in their career in my opinion.
Mike White
11:39
I agree wholeheartedly. If everything is the same next year, my solution would be to take 12 in 1A, 2A and 3A. Give the top four seeds a bye in the first round. Years ago, they did this. Of course, some coaches didn't like it. Of course, this presents a problem with the WPIAL and four games at Heinz. This is one of the big things to the WPIAL. They want four games at Heinz. It helps to pay the bill.  Funny thing is, if you ask a lot of the 3A coaches, they will tell you they don't really care if they play at Heinz. They would just like to see their playoffs match 1A and 2A.

Looking forward to the 30 for 30 on my destruction of you from last years pick em  season.

Ok tough guy,
Why don't you plant a Brian Batko flag in the middle of the studio.

OLSH is good, don't think they are that real though.  Now Cal!!!!  Yea, legit contender at most levels.  Rochester fan, we played both, and Cal is REAL!

Baby Bus in the backfield for Cal. Jelani Stafford is like 6-0, 265 pounds. AT RUNNING BACK!!!!

A lot of people counted Clairton out this year. Lol They are starting to get healthy.šŸ»

It appears so. We touched on Clairton earlier.

Any chance west mifflin keeps it close w south Fayette?
Mike White
11:41
Little chance. West Mifflin is hurting. Lots of injuries.

Anyone have a chance against Aliquippa? Iā€™ve heard a reporter say the only team in the WPIAL better than them is Pine Richland. Any truth to that?
Mike White
11:44
That reporter certainly was not me. Of course a few teams might have a chance against Aliquippa in 3A.  Doesn't mean they will win. But please. This isn't a knock against the Quips. Program is second to none. Really, really good. But Pine is the only team better??? I'll try not to choke on that one. A number of teams in 4, 5 and 6 would play with them. That's not to say they're not tremendous team at their level, but it's a lot different in the higher levels.

Charleroi faces Avonworth in the first round.  What type of team are the Antelopes?  Run pass????
Mike White
11:46
QB is the coach's son for Avonworth. Has passed for a good amount of yardage. Good receiver in Grau. I think they lke to pass.
Wike Mhite
11:46
Love the solution with 4 bye teams mike.  However do you think the coaches would prefer to just play a 13-16 seed blowout instead of the kids having a week off?  It would help stay/get healthy for top teams - why wouldn't they want the bye?
Mike White
11:47
Because they are coaches. Anything that is different in their routine, they usually don't like.
Wike Mhite
11:47
On the 4 games at Heinz...money is obviously an issue but with game times exceeding 3 hours now, 3 games would fit much better.
Mike White
11:47
I agree wholeheartedly. But the WPIAL does not for a few different reasons.

What are your thoughts on the Beaver(5) at Elizabeth Forward(4) matchup this Friday?
Mike White
11:49
Beaver is another one of the most intriguing teams in the playoffs. Only two losses are to Quippa and Quaker Valley. EF one of best years in few decades. But I'm Just Sayin. EF lost a few weeks ago and also lost to Central Valley early in the year. That was before Central Valley lost their QB. You make me choose, I'd go with Beaver.

Rumors around the County saying this is Zmijanicā€™s last year at Quip. Chances they go outside of the current staff to find a replacement?
Mike White
11:50
Yes, it could be his last. Don't know what Aliquippa will do. I just know one thing. When Z leaves, they better be careful what happens to the program.

The Quips play in 3A.  But, what is their actual enrollment?  Would they be 2A or 1A?
Mike White
11:57
Their enrollment, based on figures from two years ago, would put the Quips in 1A. Four 1A schools have bigger enrollments. OLSH, Summit, Fort Cherry and Shenango.

Hey that's it for now. Going to the gym to watch Brian Batko lift weights. Have a good Halloween, everybody. Back next Tuesday at 11 a.m.
