WPIAL IS A GARAGE LEAGUE !!!
Mike White

Thanks. Great insight. Great contribution to this chat. Now go back to bed.

I see there are games on grass in the first round for football playoffs.  I thought they were trying to avoid this and have all games on turf.  I feel teams earned the right to host they should even if grass field. I know last year games were moved.  Weather looks good for Friday.
Mike White
11:44
WPIAL decided to give higher seeded team a home game, even if it is on grass. Unless the field is not suitable for a game. I have no problem with that.

How about a shout out to the marching bands from Kiski Area (4A), Mt. Lebanon (3A), Mars (2A) and Southmoreland (1A) that won championships at the PIMBA (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Marching Band Association) competition before a capacity crowd at Moon on Saturday.
Mike White
11:44
Wooooo hooooo. That's music to my ears.
Apologize
11:44
Will Scott Seltzer and Vince Sortino apologize to the teams they screwed over ? I think the chances of the WPIAL or PIAA changing anything are about as good as yours are winning Miss Universe Mike.
Mike White
11:46
I was a finalist for Mr. Universe 30 years ago. Lost out to Bill Fralic and LaVar Arrington. I was third.
11:49
Here's a quick story I did now that the PIAA released classification parameters. This will be updated, but this gives a couple notable changes. Norwin and Hempfield moving back up to 6A football. Mars, McKeesport, Trinity just missed going to 5A football. https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/high-school-football/2023/10/31/pi...

Chat is slow today Mike. Just checking in to see if you need me to call 9-1-1?
Mike White
11:49
Yep. Trying to do a story as well as chatting. Multi-tasking, ya know?
Hoops

I know it’s still football season but when do you typically release your basketball preview?
Mike White
11:49
The week before the season.

AS always, thanks for the chats.  Favorite costume as a child, favorite candy, and favorite scary movie.

What has been going on with South Park soccer over the last 25-30 years has been extremely impressive. Both Boys and Girls have been in the mix every year. Do those programs deserve to be recognized with some of the other programs in other sports that have had sustained success like a North Catholic Girls Bball or Aliquippa Football? Or has SP Soccer not won enough championships to be mentioned in the same conversations as those dynasty's?
Mike White
11:51
We just did a story on South Park boys and girls soccer and their success in making final fours. Did you see it? Here you go:
Lil Bug
11:51
What are your thoughts about mount lebanons up and coming point guard  carter Gould AKA lil bug? The dude is an absolute monster
Mike White
11:52
Know nothing about him.
The HOW!
11:52
Mike, how do you feel about hoops this year? Which teams are you excited about this upcoming season?
Mike White
11:52
Lincoln Park first off and Cummings and Thomas back. Could win another state title.

A lot of talk about USC already.  I rarely feel bad when something doesn’t go USCs way, but 8-2 record with no postseason opportunity really isn’t fair to the players and coaches.
Mike White
11:53
Again, the issue is not so much about USC or about whether you think too many teams make the playoffs. It's about the inequity of having only 8 teams in playoffs in 5A when you have 12 to 16 in playoffs in 1A through 4A. That's the issue. That's the part that doesn't seem fair.

Is Mt Lebanon’s hockey team the greatest in 3A history?
Mike White
11:54
They're the greatest in history of hockey in the world. And I think their greatest player ever was Mikey Stoehr.

What are your thoughts on fall league basketball?  A lot of teams don't play any games but others play an entire seasons worth before tryouts.  It seems like a big risk to take so close to the season.
Mike White
11:55
Most teams have open gyms and players play pick-up. That's just as big of a chance as a fall league game. I have no problem with it. In fact, I think it's good for kids who aren't involved in a fall sport.

Who wins between peters and PCC?
Mike White
11:55
Central.
USC
11:55
Junkos on the hot seat. USC missed the playoffs for the first time in over 20 years!!!! He’s gotta go, right?
Mike White
11:57
Ahhhhh, where have you been Upper St. Clair and Junko hater. I thought you'd resurface this week. High school coaches on hot seats. Good, Lord. Yeah, and he just went to WPIAL championship last year. But that means nothing, right?
curious
11:57
With the weather changing, it’s definitely crock pot season.  What is the best soup you have ever had?
Mike White
11:59
Jumbalaya by North Hills basketball assistant Jim Long. It's famous. In fact, his "pop up" soup store for the holidays I heard is opening next month next to Molly Rottmann's house. Check it out.
Bob Palko
11:59
Theoretically, could Mt Lebanons football team beat their baseball team in touch football?
Mike White
11:59
Stop the stupidity.

11:59
North Hills football didn’t make it into the playoffs.   What are the chances the basketball team will be able to make it to the postseason?
Mike White
11:59
Not sure. Their assistant coaches are shaky.
What happened
12:00
So was it a loss or not winning by a wide enough margin that cost USC a spot ? What was it ?
Mike White
12:02
I'll explain. Moon, Bethel and USC all tied for second place. They were all 1-1 against each other, so head-to-head doesn't break the tie. They all tied in Gardner Points. So the next tiebreaker is tiebreaker points. Moon had the most tiebreaker points, so that put Moon second. Under the process, once a team is broken out, the system reverts back to head to head. Bethel Park beat Upper St. Clair, so Bethel got third and a wild card spot.
OK, that's about it for now. More to do on the PIAA classes story. See ya next Tuesday at 11 a.m.
