Not again

I don't see Central being tricked again by Lebo. Not with the far superior talent they have. Agreed ?
Mike White
11:44
Lebo seems to be playing its best. Central does indeed have a lot of talent. I'll pick Central.

thoughts about the Rochester rams getting the 14th seed and teams like Clairton ahead of them after they beat Clairton!
Mike White
11:48
I feel for Rochester. They lose to OLSH (16-8), Laurel (30-21), Union (6-0) and South Side (10-8) and beat Clairton. On other hand, they still finished fourth in the conference. I, too, had them No. 14 in my brackets. That was a mistake. They should've been higher.

Mike, I have 2 upset picks for you.  Avonworth, who I think has that same vibe as the 2019 team (except not the same left tackle and defensive end *wink*).  McKeesport, who I think just had a bad game.  The Tigers are very fast and can keep up with the Quips.
Mike White
11:50
No doubt, McKeesport really good. Wouldn't be a surprise if they won whole thing. But 4A has turned out to be very good class. Almost as good as 5A, in terms of number of quality teams.

Dear Anon, Pittsburgh is a football town. Always has been. WPIAL playoffs start this week. Nobody goes to soccer games so their will not be many comments.

Not another word.

What is the status of a shot clock for high school basketball in Pennsylvania?
Mike White
11:52
It's dead, as of right now. PIAA basketball committee voted against it. Will come up for another vote maybe next year. I wish we had it, and so do a lot of people. Major complaint against it is cost and schools wonder if they can get people to run it. But more and more states are going to it. I wish PA would.
PA Announcer
11:52
I saw some people on Facebook complaining about the PA Announcer at Aliquippa calling him unprofessional. What gives ?
Mike White
11:55
Well he's not a pro. And I wasn't from him and saw some Aliquippa fans yelling at him. It was ridiculous. He credited the wrong Aliquippa player with catching an extra-point pass. Let me tell you, those red Aliquippa numbers are very hard to read on some of those jerseys. After he got the wrong name on the extra point, I actually saw one Aliquippa female fan turn and yell, "Get it right. This is their legacy." Really? Some people. Yep, a kid's entire high school legacy is ruined because he caught a two-point conversion pass and the PA announcer credited the wrong player. Sometimes I actually am embarrassed for high school fans and parents at what they say sometimes.

Seems like in a couple of the football brackets the committee went a completely different route from what local sports writers thought for seeding in the 1st round.  There's some head scratchers there on some.  Does the committee take into account how a team is playing as the season progresses, compared to overall and conference record?  Just seems like they just looked at final records and then seeded that way.  Not expecting NCAA level consideration, but a little love for teams on the rise.
Mike White
11:58
Sorry, but disagree. First off, I don't think the committee gives a you know what about what sports writers think. Secondly, you say "love for teams on the rise." Well, McKeesport played an excellent schedule, lost and dropped to No. 5. Thomas Jefferson beat McKeesport and moved to No. 3. So wouldn't TJ be a team on the rise? They were rewarded.

Now that 5A has worked itself out...can you explain why some teams made playoffs over others...i.e. NH over PT, etc...I know you have explained Gardner points, but now that we have teams with win/loss records it may be easier to comprehend.
Mike White
11:59
Good lord, again? It has been explained in numerous stories and I just explained the entire thing above again. Look above.

Mike…what is the biggest boys & girls soccer upset in the WPIAL playoffs this year?
Mike White
11:59
According to the poster above, it's that I haven't seen a game.

Mike, terrific piece about Donta Green from Westinghouse. With all of the negativity that surrounds so much of what occurs in sports, it was refreshing to see an adult have such a positive influence on young men who don't have a wealth of role models. Well done. And don't look now, but my Blue Devils are picking up steam at precisely the right moment. It's certainly not their year, but look out in subsequent seasons.
Mike White
12:01
Thank you. Donta and Westinghouse is a wonderful story. As for your Blue Devils, Duke is only 5-3 and 2-2 in the ACC. How is that picking up steam?

I think Laurel is the one team that could beat Canevin IF their strong running game can control clock and limit possessions of Canevin playmakers. Contrasting styles,  would be heckuva game I think.

Good point.

Your thoughts on the Freeport Yellowjackets and how they stack up in the 3A bracket?
Mike White
12:01
Freeport is good, but I still think Belle Vernon, Avonworth, EF are a level above.

Is it time to get rid of the Gardner Points ? Do other HS sports organizations in other regions or states use them ?
Mike White
12:03
Not Gardner Points. But they use some kind of system. You have to have something to break ties. Look, you have to have some kind of points system to break a tie among three conference teams when they all beat each other. I have no problem with Gardner Points and point differential system there. It's when you're breaking ties with teams from different conferences. That's when Gardner Points aren't a great idea.
Uhh, Obviously

If Matt Canada applied to be a local high school coach, would you even give him an interview?
Mike White

Get out of here.

I thought you could get UP TO 10 Gardner points per game.  So you beat a team by 7, you would get 7 Gardner points.
Mike White
12:05
No, you're talking about the point differential system. That is different from Gardner Points. The point differential system is used when teams tied in Gardner Points.

Hi Mike, with the talent at Imani, do you think they have the potential to be better than Bishop Canevin was last year? The playoffs maybe a joke in the earlier rounds. I have heard they are regularly beating 5a and 6a teams in fall and summer leagues, which makes me think they would probably be the favorite in any division. Do you see anything reason teams as talented as that must play the lowest class division? What is there to gain beating teams by 60 in the playoffs
Mike White
12:06
It's Transfer High. WPIAL will rule today on four transfers to Imani. They won't have hearings, but will rule on their eligibilities. They could make them eligible or decide to bring them in for hearing.

At one time under the Gardner Point system. You received 10 points for any win over 10. And also the points for victories the teams you defeated as you stated. But head to head wins under 10 points you received that differential. Win by one get one Gardner Point.  Rules may have changed I go back a long way can you check this out. Thank you.
Mike White
12:10
You're a little mixed up. I have been doing this for just a few years, too. Again, Gardner Points are completely different than the point differential system. If three teams tie in Gardner Points, which often happens, then the point differential system is used, where points are earned in comparative scores in conference games. You can earn up to plus-10 points in a win and minus-10 in a loss. If you win a conference game by 24-10, you only get plus-10 points. If you lose, 7-3, you get minus-4 points. Again Gardner Points are applied first in a three-way tie. If there is still a tie, point differential system is used. But in two or three-way ties, head-to-head is still first tiebreaker.
12:11
OK, I have a headache from explaining Gardner Points. See ya. Be good. Next Tuesday at 11 again.
