Mike, we've heard from many schools who have asked for a delay to the start of the winter season and a reduction in number of games, similar to the fall. After the WPIAL met again yesterday and refused to make changes, is the winter season doomed with the current shutdown after shutdown? Don't see the point in rushing to start between Thanksgiving and Christmas
Mike White
11:31
Again, I touched on this above. If a school wants to delay the start, fine. But PIAA will not mandate that. If you're not playing games, why not get the required practices in now. If you have to shut down and then come back, you'll have the required number of practices in already.

Hey Mike.  Who do you think are some possibilities of receiving the Defensive Player of the Year Award? Saw some really good ones play Saturday night
Mike White
11:34
First off, I don't know of any "Defensive Player of the Year" award in WPIAL. If there was, some of the candidates might be Corban Hondru (Peters), Luke Miller (Pine), Sean FitzSimmons (Central Valley) he was crazy good in WPIAL final. Those are just a few

When Quips moved up to 4 A I thought no way could they hang with TJ from physicality or depth standpoint. Boy was I wrong. And they could be even better next year. Probably move one or two of those talented underclassmen receivers to backfield. Great game that was Saturday huh?
Mike White
11:35
Why wouldn't Aliquippa be able to hang with TJ physically? Did you see Aliquippa? They're gigantic. I wrote a story on their lines earlier this year. They are around same size as Steelers and Pitt lines. Seriously.

Mike, do you think Jeannette's Freshman QB could be the 1st Freshman to take his team to a WPIAL Championship? And has a Freshman ever led the WPIAL in TD Passes before this year? Curious
Mike White
11:38
No he's not the first. Mac McArdle of Upper St Clair was freshman QB who started against McKeesport in 1994 4A final. Brandon Short was chasing him and hounding him everywhere.

How good was the team wilmington played..do you think there's better teams in the wpial. Then other districts
Mike White
11:38
Wilmington played Chestnut Ridge. I like Chestnut Ridge golf course better.

Your thoughts on Jon Hays making the all-time Fabulous 22 ?
Mike White
11:39
People don't realize how good Jon Hayes was. He was on the first Fab 22 in 1980. One of best tight ends at University of Iowa and then he played 12 years in NFL. 12 years!!!!
11:41
Honestly I don't know if Hayes will make the all time Fab 22. I'm still tabulating votes and ballots -- and there is no poll watchers, no mail in ballots, no fraudulent votes. It's not rigged. But maybe some really sharp guy named Donald will demand a recount. There have been two Donalds on the Fab 22 - Aaron and his nephew Elliot. I better watch out. They might protest.

What’s the word on Governor Mifflin?
Mike White
11:46
Steve Carell is Governor Mifflin's coach. John Krasinski is the star QB. ..... Oh, I forgot that was Dunder Mifflin and The Office. This is Governor Mifflin. ... Well I can tell you on paper, they look very good. Pine-Richland has mercy ruled eight of nine opponents. Mifflin has mercy ruled all seven of its opponents. Mifflin has one of the best junior running backs in the country in Nicholas SIngleton. Already ton of offers, including Pitt, Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame. Averages 15 yards a carry. Has over 4,000 yards offense. Mifflin uses old-style offense. Actually runs old veer. Preview story on line and in print later this week.

Pine has rolled over everyone in 5a and expect them do so to Hershey. Those teams on their own likely to be competitive with each other ( look at Gateway Peters game )Do you think they Pine should have played 6a. ? I think they could have won Wips. Not so sure about State w St Joes.
Mike White
11:48
Why all the hate on Pine playing 5A. What's wrong with playing where your enrollment places you? Don't hate on them just because they are very good at their level. And let's clear up this misconception that some people seem to have. You don't "choose" to play down. Teams can't play "down." You only "choose" to play up.
11:49
And one other thing about Pine. Beaver Falls knew it was going to be good this year. They dropped down because of enrollment from 3A to 2A. They dominated. I don't hear any hate against Beaver Falls. Nor should there be.

Any idea what percentage of football games were cancelled because of Covid concerns? I think it has to be well under 5%. Great move by PIAA/WPIAL to try and get season in.
Mike White
11:50
I don't have my abacus with me but it was a very small percentage.

Likewise to your above comment, if P-R and ECP are fortunate enough to win, perhaps play title game here in western PA?
Mike White
11:50
Most definitely.
11:51
But one other thing. You see social distancing of fans at Steeler games, right? And some college games. Huh. That social distancing of fans went out the window at WPIAL semifinal and final games that I saw. Loads of people right on top of each other - and some without masks.

Why is there no punishment for 6A teams who have transfers?  If Aliquippa has to move up in football because of transfers then why is there no sort of punishment for the 6A teams like Central and NA that have kids move in?  You can't move them up a classification.  If I ran a 6A program I would encourage as many transfers as possible.
Mike White
11:53
That's one of the bad things about the rule. Nowhere for 6A teams to bump up. I don't have answer for you. But the ineligibility for postseason if you transfer is supposed to curb transfers some. I don't think it has.

Defensive Player of Year. 1 Luke Miller ,interceptions , sacks and tfls.  made big players all year. 2 Corbin Hondru. , load of tackles. 3. Donovan Mcmillian. 4 Miguel Jackson. 9 sacks and a bunch of tfls.
Mike White

Good. Send out a press release.

Who has the best all time record: A) The Fumbler B) Bill Cherpak C) Timbo McConnell D) The Dribbler?
Mike White
11:56
I'm not sure of the records of those four individuals, who truth be told, meet once a week on Zoom video just to talk about new material for jokes. And The Fumbler and Dribbler have been known to imitate Cherpak a lot, making picks at their desk while wearing shorts. And I do know this: Fumbler and Dribbler are way funnier than either of those two - and also better athletes.

@pr Governor Mifflin is ok. they’re not as good as peters Township or Penn Trafford. Mercy rule first half PR

Maybe only one Governor can stop Pine-Richland. Wolf.

DOn't understand why Quips had to play up 4A and not S Columbia under PIAA rules. PR "hate" may coming from some confusion on not playing up.
Mike White
11:58
It's the new PIAA competition success formula. If you have three transfers over two years and go far in the playoffs two years, you might earn enough "success" points and be bumped up. Southern Columbia appealed their bump up, claiming their transfers were all before the rule went into effect. They won their appeal with PIAA. I know people aren't happy about Aliquippa bump-up. You can debate the rules. But under the rules, Aliquippa should've been bumped up.
12:01
Just about done here. Don't forget there will be a "Fan all-time Fab 22" team also. You can vote by going on our web site. We've already had a few thousand people vote. Seriously. Here is one of the number one questions many have: What do you do with Gronk? He played at Woodland Hills only one year and caught nine - yes nine - passes. But he might be the greatest tight end ever.
12:02
OK that's about it for now. Man, lots of questions. That's good. We'll do it again next Tuesday at 11 a.m. Everyone, be good.
