If 5A and 6A were to mesh together for the regular season wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of moving to 6 classes?
Mike White
11:26
Yes. That would be an argument. I'm just saying it's an idea that has been thrown around.

A couple years ago, Farrel attempted to rejoin WPIAL but was denied (if that's the right description). They are again District 10 football champs in 1A. In your pre-game coverage this week vs Jeanette, have you heard of any further attempts by Farrel to revisit this? I figured it might coincide with PIAA realignment.
Mike White
11:27
I have not. And we would've heard of it by now I believe. I think they might realize they have to stay put in District 10.
Rick
11:27
What did you think of the officiating on Saturday's 1A game?
Mike White
11:28
Not great. But after hearing some of the rules after the game, I will say this. People who complain about official calls often don't know the rules. Some of the things the officials did were not wrong, contrary to what people thought.
11:29
Like in basketball, I wish I had a dollar for every time over the years when a player is near halfcourt and the crowd goes crazy because they think he went over-and-back. They don't know the rule. Both feet AND the ball have to be over the half-court line to have "over-and-back." That's just an example of people not knowing rules.

Any chance of a Basketball Tournament matching up Mars and Pine Richland? Seeing Carmody and Jurkovec on the same floor would be pretty fun.
Rick
11:33
In high school is it not a fumble if the ball is throw behind the QB as it happened in the game on Saturday?
Mike White
11:34
First, to RGW. No. That would be great but they are not scheduled to play each other. Not in a tournament either.
11:36
To Rick, yes indeed it is a fumble. But the officials ruled an inadvertent whistle one time. And as it was explained later, when the ball is loose during an inadvertent whistle, it is the officials call whether to re-play the down. That is what they did.
Jimmy
11:36
who was your surprise team this year
Mike White
11:36
Quaker Valley. Hands down.

Saw in fab22 that Pitt has taken a look at Noah Plack from South Fayette.  Is that a legitimate rumor?  Kid is a great player, wonder what position tho - not sure he's D1 linebacker size.
Mike White
11:36
Coach Joe Rossi said they came and looked at him, but coach doesn't know if there is any real interest or will they follow up??

With Erie Cathedral Prep's dominance of TJ and Central earlier in the season, how would they stack up against Pine Richland?
Mike White
11:37
That would be a great game also. Talent all over the field. Erie Prep really good. I think they go on to win 4A and Archbishop Wood 5A. Same old story.

Schools have about a week to declare whether or not they will play "up" for the next 2 yrs based on recently announced realignment. Question: does the PIAA make these decisions known as they come in or do they just release a new breakdown of classifications after the deadline?
Mike White
11:38
The PIAA does not make these decisions known when they receive them. PIAA will release new classifications after they have all of the teams playing "up."
Jimmy
11:38
not a lot about TJ getting blow again by the same team 3 years in a row, blown out the last two
Mike White
11:39
Sorry Jimmy, but what what do you mean?
Wike Mhite
11:39
Huge loss by Bishop Guilfoyle last weekend.  Hopefully Jeannette can bring home the title but a team that knocked off BG must be really good!
Mike White
11:40
Homer-Center beat Guilfoyle. But Homer-Center now plays a team from the East - Steelton-Highspire. Jeannette has to get past Farrell.
Wike Mhite
11:42
Erie Prep was about 5 boys from moving up to 5A...was disappointed to see that - I was hoping 4A could get rid of the Erie all star team obstacle.
Mike White
11:43
Oh well. They do lose a lot of talent this season. Maybe they won't be as strong next year. But they will be good every year.
Funky
11:44
Who do you like between 13-0Middletown & 7-6 Egan-Conwall on Saturday in West Chester? RB Garwo of E-G looks like another DeAndre Swift
Mike White
11:45
Middletown was in state final last year. Lost to Beaver Falls. Obviously, they are good. Yes, Garwo is good. Had 10 offers by early September. Saying he is another D'Andre Swift, though??? Easy there. But at the 3A level, I imagine he's a bear to handle.

If Central can control the ball against Gateway, they stand a chance. But their pass defense has stunk for years, despite 21 picks this year. Huge loss when RB Tyler Flick went down.
Mike White
11:45
Good scouting report MCMike. Let's just call you MCHammer for that one.
Wike Mhite
11:46
I saw it listed that this is the furthest Gateway has ever gone.   Remarkable, I find it surprising that with all of those great teams in the past that they had never won a PIAA game.  Congrats to them!
Mike White
11:47
You need to understand that the PIAA playoffs didn't start until 1988. So those teams that won WPIAL titles under Pete Antimarino never went to state playoffs because they didn't exist. Their last WPIAL title before this season was 1986. So they had never been in state playoffs before.

I was at the TJ Prep game. To my eye Prep looked bigger stronger and faster overall . TJ fought  hard and never quit but they just were not at Preps level.
Mike White
11:47
Obviously. And I think everyone knew that going in.
WPIAL Lifer

On topic of realignment: let's look at football; assuming Aliquippa (1A enrollment) elects to again play up, does the PIAA at that point drop a team from 2A back to 1A? In other words, Carmichaels is slotted to be the smallest 2A football school in state. If Aliquippa plays up and Vincentian cannot field a team, are they still stuck in 2A despite 1A losing at least two teams?
Mike White
11:50
PIAA does not "drop" teams. You play where your enrollment puts you. Even if teams move up, they don't move anyone down.
11:53
OK everyone. Time to roll. Next week at 11 a.m. again. Everyone be good.
