2004 Central was indeed a great team. But let's not be ridiculous and say they could have handled the 1987 North Hills team. Please. Yes, I'd take Central 2004 over North Hills 1993.

The Johncour family, under-rated WPIAL legends!  The dad had some good teams at the old churchill high school, and the sons (one now the Avonworth coach) was a good QB for Woody high.

Duke Johncour has done a most terrific job at Avonworth. Built a "program." Good every year. I agree he's underrated as coach. And he seems to adapt to personnel. Pretty much changed offense late in the season with Neal brothers. He wasn't just a Woodland Hills QB. He was the first Woodland Hills QB in 1987. And he's not a bad 9th grade boys basketball coach, either. Ha ha.

Suprised TJ and PR losted ?
Mike White
11:38
A little surprised at TJ, but not at P-R. McDevitt is very good. Lots of talent. But penalties cost P-R TDs. That changes the game. But just goes to show you that it's really hard to know sometimes how good some of these teams are from eastern Pa. You just don't know if you don't see them.

I'm a big Strader fan, but it wasn't his best night Friday. He came around in the second half, but the whole was too big. PR had receivers open pretty much all night.   State College hung 50 on McDevitt. PR game should've been a shootout.  I don't think PR had one possession in the first half without a penalty...killer...and the same lineman was a chronic offender this year. D had a kid that takes a lot, too.  Too bad because I think they were good enough to win. I will say the rb for McDevitt reminded me a bit of De'Andre Swift from St. Joes when he ran thru Central Catholic tacklers...like someone running through the blaster  machine, then had the speed to take it to the house  In desperation, PR put Timmons in the backfield.   He ended up fumbling, but was he ever DYNAMIC.  What position do you think Timmons will play in college?  I"m assuming db
Mike White

I didn't see Pine game. Yeah, Swift was pretty swift (you see what I did there?). As for Timmons, his coach said and all indications are he is being recruited for defense. But from what I saw, he's not too shaboo (as Deuce would say) as receiver.

Bad weekend for WPIAL football, we all know about St. Joe's, but how's Avonworth's chanced at winning the title?
Mike White
11:43
I would guess decent. I know Northwestern Lehigh has a strong program and has been highly regarded all year. I had them at No. 4 in state rankings at beginning of the year. They have a RB Zimmerman who has ran for 2,548 yards and averages 11 yards a carry. Won't be easy for Avonworth. Key will be how well those Neal brothers can run the ball in that Nealscat offense.

The 1979 Penn Hills team was legendary until Gateway beat them. Churchill - Mediocre at best unless we talk about Joe Massey's teams of late 60's and early 70's
Mike White

Penn Hills team in 1979 had BIll Fralic and Tom Flynn, but that team did not lose to Gateway. They went 12-1 and lost to Gerry Faust and Cincinnati Moeller in first game of the year. They did not lose again. But they did not dominate. Only beat North Hills 10-7 in semifinals and then beat Gateway 3-0 in title game. Gateway beat Penn Hills in 1980 regular season finale.

Speaking of 1987, can you refresh my memory?  I remember it was the first year for Woodland Hills and they had a very good team.  Did they play NH in the playoffs that year?  If so I imagine it was an epic game.
Mike White

The 1987 North Hills team was the one that finished ranked No. 1 in the country by USA Today. Won mythical national championship. Gave up only 20 points and first-team defense didn't allow a point. North Hills did not play Woodland Hills in playoffs. Woodland Hills lost to Mt. Lebanon in the semifinals on a snowy Baldwin field, despite Craig Thomas (future Michigan State back) running for close to 300 yards. Lebo then lost to North Hills in WPIAL final. Lebo had QB Scott Clements.

Lots of football openings already.  These jobs usually don't open until after the holidays.  Do you think we will see any retired coaches (Palko, Warfield, Rossi, etc.) return to a WPIAL sideline in 2025?
Mike White
11:49
I say no way on Palko or Rossi. Warfield I'm not sure, but I would maybe doubt him also.

Any updates on the Chartiers Valley coaching mess. Seems like a real disaster. I like Coach Fitz but in the end it was all about winning and they simply weren't doing that. Sports are cruel like that sometimes
Mike White
11:50
No updates. Char Valley administration? You tell me. After what they did to hoops coach Brandon Sensor last year didn't sit well with a lot of people. And I think Fitzpatrick only got two years as coach. Not exactly a lot.

I'm sure people are up in arms over the $25 million price tag for Norwin stadium.  But thinking back to the 80's and the mud pits stadiums would become in the playoffs (Woodland Hills, Martorelli) I believe any renovation is worth it.  Especially if it aids in player safety with better turf, etc.
Mike White
11:51
Hey if you want to renovate a stadium to the extent they want to, it's what it costs. And people fail to realize it's not just used a few nights for football games. Used for tons of things in the district.

Can USC potentially go undefeated this year ?
Mike White
11:52
There's potential for anything, right? But come on, now. You think they can be perfect going all the way through those Philly teams in biggest classification?
Basketball
11:52
Mike, whats your thoughts on teams playing a challenging schedule early like what Knoch, Moon and Imani did, and team that play games they know they will win?
Mike White
11:53
It's good to play some good teams in non-section. Hopefully the WPIAL committee looks at that. But there are definitley some teams out there who play a lot of tomato cans, too. But I wouldn't say that's the case with a lot of teams.

Do the fighting Swans survive a trip to Latrobe tonight?
Mike White
11:56
Wooooo, tough one. Always love a question about "Fightin' Swans." If Billy calls his good buddy Danny Holzer and gets some pointers, then they have a chance. Don't ever underestimate the Fightin Swans, especially if Billy got a few other pointers from his wife, Lisa. Hempfield can definitely win. But I think I'll go with Latrobe in a close one. Hempfield lost some close ones last year.
11:57
Hey, where are the "creator" questions this week? Are yinz still out there?

Heading out to Montour vs Alderdice tonight to watch two D1 recruits face off. Who you got??
Mike White
11:58
Montour all the way.

OK that's about it. Still some turkey left over for a good sandwich. Everyone, be good. Let's talk again next Tuesday.
