State championships in football this weekend. Hoops has started. So let's get busy, even a few minutes early.

When can we expect the realignments to come out- like Xmas for football and January for other sports?
Mike White
10:56
Not until New Year most likely. WPIAL has to know first what teams are in what classes.

Any word on how Royce Parham is doing so far at that private school?
Mike White
10:57
Good, I think. You're talking about Western Reserve. I saw him play once. He's gotten a little bigger and stronger. He played well when I saw him. Good luck to him.

Mike- it is very early, what other big wpial football HC jobs are open aside from South Fayette?
Mike White
10:58
Not sure. None in 6A. I don't know if any others in 5A.

Mike White

based on a two game sample of this weekend's HS hoop games...what opinion would you like to update?
Mike White
10:58
None so far.

Mike.... 34 teams in 1A for football....insane! When are we going to start seeing school consolidations or co-ops?
Mike White

I agree with you, but it's easier said than done. Lot of these smaller schools don't want to close because they say they lose their "identity." Plus, you have to have another school willing to merge and take in a school. Some schools aren't willing to do that. But I think educationally it would be good for some schools to merge.

Hi Mike, Peters and NA both struggled to put up points in their semifinals game. Do you think they have any shot this week? St. Joe’s Prep is no. 7 in the nation and I’ve seen Imhotep in some national rankings as well. Also, how about that TD call in Peters favor? The receiver was clearly out of bounds.
Mike White

NA will certainly have their hands full. So will Peters. Both are playing teams loaded with major-college players. St. Joseph's (NA opponent) has two kids going to Cincinnati, one to Wisconsin, one to Kentucky, one to WVU and one to Army. Plus underclassmen. Imhotep has all kinds of future major-college players. RB going to Georgia. But let me bring up. Imhotep has had big-time players in past and I think they're 1-5 in championship games. Peters defense will have to be superb again. St. Joe's is really, really good. But NA is good, too. St. Joe's for sure, though, is the favorite.

Imani to 3A football is an interesting move. I can understand hoops, but football seems weird.
Mike White
11:03
Imani to 6A in basketball. Wow. All I will say is it will be very interesting who shows up at Imani in the next year or so.

I found it interesting Woody High only noticed their enrollment mistake after it came out they were 6A... Any update on what the PIAA will do here?
Mike White
11:03
Might have a decision tomorrow.

Thomas Jefferson vs Baldwin tonight. But 6A/5A matchup. Who do you got in that one?
Mike White
11:04
Might be best game of night. I'll take Baldwin.

Who is the best basketball player to come out of Western PA?
Mike White
11:09
That's hard to say right off top of my head. Kenny Durrett was fantastic but got hurt in college and ruined his pro career. To be the best, you'd have to have success in NBA, too. Maybe Maurice Lucas. Norm Van Lier (Midland) was pretty good. Simmi Hill (Midland) was a great one. Tell you who's underrated as an all-time great from WPIAL is Jack Marin from Farrell. Really good NBA player. Played at Duke. Averaged 19 and 18 points a game. Don Hennon (Wampum) was a great one. And maybe you should put T.J. McConnell on that list. Unbelievable senior season at Char Valley. Who could've thought he'd play this long in the NBA and is having an impact. Danny Fortson also. I know I'm missing plenty. But those are some who come to mind.

I saw Matt Sieg has accounted for something like 62 touchdowns eyes.  Curious as to What the WPIAL record for touchdowns in a season is?
Mike White
11:11
That's combined passing and running. That's different than TDs scored by a player. I don't know what record is for one season, but career is 117 - by Tyler Boyd and Lamont Wade, both of Clairton.Clairton            117 (2009-12)
Lamont Wade, Clairton         117 (2013-16)

How many Gold medals and trophies make their way to Western PA this weekend?
Mike White

I'll say two - at the most three.

How can St. Joes Prep have kids from New Jersey & Delaware and play in the PENNSYLVANIA state championship ? Just doesn’t seem right.
Mike White
11:12
Yep. Sure doesn't seem right. But Been that way for a while. But PIAA doesn't want to separate public and non-pulbic schools. So it's not going to change.

Who are the best coordinators in the WPIAL? Offense & Defense. Seems like head coaches get a lot of credit and rightfully so but it takes a whole staff.
Mike White
11:12
I can't name them. I don't even know who all coordinators are.

There really needs to be boundaries for the Catholic/private schools. That would solve the issue. I don’t think people would have an issue with Catholic/private schools if that were the case. If a player lived in Oakland or the city of Pittsburgh they could go to Central. Just like if a kid lives in Ross Township they go to North Hills. A kid from Ross Township can’t play at NA so the same should be true if a kid wants to go to Central.
Mike White
11:15
Well Football Fan, when Catholic schools joined the WPIAL in the 1970s, they did have boundaries. Kids in South Hills went to South Hills Catholic. Kids in North went to North Catholic. In West went to Canevin. And so on. But those boundaries were broken down at some point. And there's no way now that anyone can tell a kid he can't go to a private/Catholic school of his choice. The horse has been out of the barn for a long time.
