Their defense. But their defense must be at its best this game.

What is the best pizza place in Pittsburgh in your opinion?
Mike White
11:16
Any one that gives me a discount.
11:18
As for the pizza guy, I'm a Giovanni's fan, but don't get it near enough.

Which championship game do you think will be the most competitive?
Mike White
11:20
I think Westinghouse can play with Southern Columbia. The QB matchup with Fort Cherry and Steel-High is one of best QB matchups ever. Steel High has leading passer in Pa. history. Peters and Imhotep also.

Any good pizza places out in Cumberland Valley that you know of we can get before the state championship games?
Mike White
11:20
Sorry only been there once and didn't eat pizza. They fed media in Cumberland Valley school cafeteria and it was actually very good. Shoutout to Cumberland Valley cafeteria workers.

What are the chances you think Woody High actually plays in 6A this upcoming year? Also will Butler play ?
Mike White
11:21
Can't ever predict what PIAA will do. And as of last week, Butler still wasn't sure if it would come back to the WPIAL or not.

Mike, what are your thoughts on the NCAA removing the min SAT requirements for student athletes ? I guess running a  4.5 40 is more important than a decent SAT score. Don't want to hear about how test are bias...math is math...
Mike White
11:22
SATs and ACTs don't hold a lot with many colleges now. And not just for athletes. I know colleges aren't looking at them as much.

Hi Mike.  Interesting that Imani Christian is moving to 6A in hoops for the next cycle.  The move surprises me.  Maybe this helps level the playing field (court) in 1A basketball a bit.
Mike White
11:26
As I said earlier, it certainly will be interesting to see in next year or so who shows up at Imani to play. No secret that they've been known to get a number of transfers. And with a new coach, who knows who will show up there. Big question, wonder how 6A WPIAL teams will feel about playing in Imani gym that is about the size of my living room. All I'll say is this, one coach, who didn't want his name used, said to me, "It's hard for me to believe that the powers that be are so stupid that when a 1A with 30 some boys confidently says we will go play 6A, that they don't know what that means."
Penn State

State Championships Ohio plays at Hall of Fame stadium. Texas plays at Cowboys stadium. Michigan plays at Ford Field. Florida plays at FAMU. Maryland plays at Navy. Massachusetts plays at Gillette stadium. PA plays at Cumberland valley. It’s really ashame.
Mike White
11:28
Cumberland Valley is really a nice high school stadium. Seriously. And PIAA got it for a good price. Seriously, Hersheypark is a dump if you ever saw locker rooms, etc. You only see the field. They don't even really have locker rooms. THey have small rooms. People won't be happy about state championship sites unless it's Acrisure or Eagles stadium. And I would say no way PIAA is going to pay to use those. Besides, crowds don't warrant using those. Best crowd for a state championship game nowadays is 5,000. And who says Acrisure or Eagles stadiums would want state championship games.

Mike, Section 3 in 5A looks very tough and balanced. Hard to pick a front runner . Who are your top 2 in this section
Mike White
11:30
I assume you're talking boys hoops. I really think Kiski Area is a sleeper team for all of 5A.

How would you rank the 6 western PA teams based on win probability this weekend?
Mike White
11:31
I would say Belle Vernon has best chance to win and then Aliquippa. And like I said, Imhotep has all this Division I talent, but I think they're 1-5 in state finals. I think Fort Cherry, Westinghouse and NA are all underdogs.
NA
11:31
If NA pulls off the impossible saturday, are they the greatest wpial team of all time?
Mike White
11:31
No.
HoopsMan
11:31
Imani going to 6A just says that they plan on recruiting the living crap out of the area, and can now say "well we have all of these kids, but at least were at the highest classification!" The whole thing is garbage.
Mike White
11:34
You said it, not me. I'll share with you a short conversation with their coach from about 15 years ago when he got Imani job the first time. I was getting ready to coach an AAU tournament game. He approached me, nicely introduced himself and asked if I would do a story on him. I asked "why should I do a story." He said because he's the new coach at Imani and wants to get all of the best players in all of Western Pennsylvania to come to their school so they can have the best team. Enough said.

Is Westinghouse really a city league all star team ? Correct me if I'm wrong, but cant you pick what HS you go to if you live anywhere in the city of Pittsburgh ?
Mike White
11:34
Yes.

Mike - your article on 11/1 said in 1982 Mt Lebanon was the last team to finish 4th or lower in and win the wpial football championship.  Can you check on this one - Upper St Clair finished 4th in their section and was seeded 6th in 1988.  They beat gateway, lebo, and then central in the wpial finals.
Mike White
11:36
Ahhhh USC fan. Other USC people are claiming this. I have standings right in front of me. USC finished tied for third with North Allegheny with 6-3 conference record. So really, they didn't finish fourth. Mt. Lebanon tied for fourth. There's a big difference. Plus USC was 7-3 overall in regular season.

While Imhotep has underperformed in the PIAA championship game, with the talent that they have from all over the City of Philadelphia, the deck is still stacked against public schools. They are more and more like an IMG. I don't begrudge the players knowing that Imhotep improves their post-HS college opportunities, but do you think that the PIAA competition formula is sufficient to level the playing field?
Mike White
11:37
No. It doesn't address what many want. Separation of public and non-public schools.

Huge upset with Dallas over Mcdevitt. Any thoughts on Dallas or Northwestern Lehigh? It is nice to see some new blood.
Mike White
11:38
Dallas' win over McDevit was shocking. Biggest upset in state playoffs. Just looking at that, Aliquipipa shouldn't be overlooking Dallas. I talked to Dallas coach last night. No Division I players. Just good high school players, going to D-2 or D-3 schools.

Mike I saw Uniontown beat up on Washington last night. Last year they were good enough to make the final 4. Lincoln Park derailed them on LP way to a state title. From what I saw last night that same match up could possibly happen again. From what I saw Uniontown is better than last year. They play TJ Friday that could be competitive.
Mike White
11:39
Uniontown is very good. Saw them in suummer. Could be Lincoln Park's main competition in 4A.
Hoops Fan
11:39
I assume Lincoln Park will be forced up to 5A next year, right? Assuming they don't collapse and somehow not make a deep run into states.
Mike White
11:40
Here's the scoop: If Lincoln Park makes the state quarterfinals, which is a pretty safe best, they would move up. Because they would have at least 6 "success" points and they have at least one transfer the past two years. So they will most likely move up.

I was at the North Hills and Hampton game on Saturday. Despite losing Parham and the older Pollaro, I thought the young/inexperienced NH team did a good job against a very good Hampton team.  NH May take some lumps this year but they should be good in the future.
Mike White
11:40
Hampton game was a good game. Hampton won it with play down the stretch. Peter Kramer is really good. North Hills just trying to be competitive.

What are your thoughts on the Central Catholic “fifth Ave” jerseys?
Mike White
11:41
You know what? I'm going to hold back on this one because people would say I'm against Central. But I don't understand it all. Central has nothing to do with Fifth Ave. If I were Sam Clancy or Puffy Kennedy, I would not be happy. But who am I?
