Think it's a wait-and-see on them. Butler is good, though.

What are all the gripes on Twitter concerning Southern Columbia? Everyone keeps talking about how they should be moved up a classification or two. Do they somehow get around the competitive balance rule or are these people just screaming at the sky because they are so good?
Mike White
11:24
It's because people don't understand the rule and because they see what went on with Aliquippa. Southern Columbia claimed no transfers in past two years. That's why they didn't move up.

So I heard a story on Girls Wrestling on the Fan this morning. Is this a thing now ? Are we gonna start reading a "Girls Wrestling Preview" in the PG soon ? How many programs actually exist in this area ?
Mike White
11:25
I think there are now 86 schools in the state with girls wrestling. Might eventually see PIAA sponsor it. Maybe.

Western PA has an undeserved reputation for its affection of high school football.  The bad attendance at Acrisure proved this.  Yeah, Quips-Central Valley was a huge game, but I remember being at "rivalry" games like NA vs. NH and there were plenty of open seats
Mike White
11:27
I don't disagree. Attendance for state championships certainly has never been overwhelming. I still contend that attendance for regular season is still good, especially for big games. Maybe not what it was 30-40 years ago. I know I go to one of the bigger regular season games all week. They're usually crowded. But people just don't go to playoff games like they used to. That's a fact.

The House gonna be able to shut down the vaunted Southern Columbia run game?
Mike White
11:27
That's the key to the game.

Your thought on NIL at the high school level?  See the PIAA has begun to address it in recent meetings. What kind of implications do you think NIL could have on high school athletics in PA?
Mike White
11:30
PIAA meeting tomorrow and board will vote on third and final reading about NIL rule. We will know more tomorrow. I don't think many kids will be affected by this. Just the top ones. But it will have an effect. It has to. I know this as a fact. You'll actually see player agents trying to get in on top kids in high school. They figure if they can get them in high school, get them a good NIL deal, they might be able to get them when they go pro.

Hi Mike....from Belle Vernon, hoping to be champs on Saturday!!!    Do you know if other sports-crazy states like Ohio, Florida, Texas, etc charge resident to see these high school games?   I think the state playoffs should be on some channel for free so every Pennsylvanians can see them!
Mike White
11:31
Well, I don't know where you've been but all state championships have been on PCN for a while now. As for semifinals, you do know it's not cheap to do live TV? If you really want to see it, pay the live streaming fee. How much is it? 20 or 25 dollars. C'mon, man.

Looking at the Kramer kid at Hampton & the transfer rule. Do you feel a player should be ineligible for the playoffs when they go from a private or parochial school back to the home district in which they and their parents reside?  Seems unfair to all parties involved to allow the player to play in the regular season but not the playoffs.
Mike White
11:34
I'm not here to say it's a good rule or a bad rule. That's a matter of debate. But the rule is if you transfer after your sophomore sports season, you are not eligible for postseason at your new school. So do you think it would be OK for a kid to go from private to public and be eligible, but ineligible if he goes from public to private? C'mon, man. Now that wouldn't be right. PIAA put the rule in with the hopes it would curb some transfers. I don't think it has.

Will you be trying Cumberland Valley Pickles this week
Mike White

Stopping at Chambersburg for peaches.

What’s the deal with these all conference teams choosing like 20 kids for 1st team offense and 20 for 1st team D? I know I’m old school but It should be 11 on O and 11 on D.
Mike White
11:36
Thank you. Yes, it should be at most 13 or 14. There's one conference - Tri-County South in Class 1A - that picks something like 45 players all conference. They don't do a first team or second team. They go by how many wins you had. Ridiculous. But they won't change.

New Castle hoops is 6A of course. Is it crazy to think the path to another state title there is easier than the meat grinder that is going against the smaller Philly Charter schools?
Mike White
11:37
Not quite sure what you mean. But in new PIAA brackets for this year. 6A and 5A teams from the west won't have to meet Philly schools in semifinals, like previous years.
Coach O
11:37
Will teams like Aliquippa and Union with a lot of basketball players in football get done early section games rescheduled? If they do, does the WPIAL get involved with that or is that just an agreement reached between the two schools involved? Could a team say “no way Quips, show up this Friday and play, we will not reschedule
Mike White
11:38
WPIAL usually doesn't get involved with that because usually schools are nice enough to work it out. They know the situation.
Jock Sutherland
11:38
Does the PIAA have rules on amount of high school players from same team allowed on a sports club team.  Was in a tourney in Ohio for VB and  was told they are only allowed 3 players from one High School on a club team.
Mike White
11:38
No Pennsylvania does not have a rule like that. But I know Ohio does.
So do a few other states I think.
Crazy
11:38
Not sure if you saw the ending of the Minnesota HS championship game that was won on a Hail Mary/Hook and Lateral. Have you ever seen a crazy finish like that around here ?
Mike White
11:39
Yes, Central vs. Gateway in 2007 WPIAL final at Heinz. Gateway scored on same play on final play of game to send into OT. Cam Saddler was involved.
Single A

Good Morning Mike, with Geibel taking 2 early and bad losses it looks like they will be no issues for Monessen this year. Is there any other teams such as California or Jefferson-Morgan that maybe able to compete with the greyhounds? Also thoughts on Aquinas Rochester and Neighborhood? Who do you see sliding into the top 5 now
Mike White
11:41
Not much depth of quality teams in Class 1A. Imani by far has the most talent. Union has all five starters back. Monessen a team to watch. Believe it or not, I'll go out on a limber and say I don't expect Jeff-Morgan to challenge for a title.
Coach O
11:41
Who decides on rescheduling section games in basketball for teams like Quips and Union who have most of team still in football? Is that by WPIAL or by mutual agreement between the two schools? Does the other school have the ability to say “ Tough Union, show up Friday and play”?
Mike White
11:41
Just answered this above.

What boys basketball games to watch this weekend?
Mike White
11:43
Friday night Imani at Allderdice. That's a really good one. Plus Moon at Penn Hills, North Hills at NA.

  1. thoughts on TJ hoops?
Mike White
11:44
I think T.J. McConnell is having a real impact for the Pacers this year.

11:44
How does TJ hoops look?
Mike White
11:45
Oh, Thomas Jefferson High School? I know that Evan Berger is very good. Scored 40 and 29 in first two games.

11:46
You are going to see most of the Union football team leave the field Thursday, and immediately suit up for the hoops game they have Sunday. I love that! This focusing on one sport stuff is for the weak. GO COMPETE!! Remember when Revis did that?!
Mike White
11:47
Yes, I say the greatest three days ever by a WPIAL athlete. Had one of the best state championship performances ever on a Sunday and two nights later scored 35 points in an overtime win against Beaver Falls. And I was at both.
