Hey, I just got this info sent to me by a coach who will remain nameless who saw this chat. He said on roster forms for PIAA, Roman doesn't list player who are transfers, but according to him 12 players are listed from a district outside the state. And McDevitt lists 7 players as transfers. This is from a coach. Take for what it's worth.

Mike...has AAU created more blowouts in basketball? It seems like there are rarely any close games anymore. You either have guys or you don't. Does not seem to be the athletic teams who can keep games close anymore.

North Catholic on Sunday over Devon Prep from the other side of the state was great to see.  DP finished last season ranked #1.

I'm sure that was a good game to watch. Devon Prep has a nice program. I've seen them in state finals. North Catholic is good also. NC plays fast. Good guard tandem in Fredericks and Rottmann. I would imagine that would be a good game to watch.

Thoughts on girls 6A basketball for this season?  Is this Canon Mac's year?

I'll be blunt. Class 6A is down in girls basketball. Doesn't mean Canon-McMillan isn't good. I just mean overall, Class 6A doesn't have the depth of good teams. Some usually good teams are a little down.

I just saw on twitter that Roman Catholic just got a Quarterback transfer from New Jersey for next year. The kid announced it like he was making a college comittment.

Any more info on the Fox Chapel Fball coach situation? What caused the coach to do this? Did the AD know about this before it happened? Seems like the coach is basically asking for the parents' permission to resign.

We talked about it earlier in this chat. Crazy situation. Never seen anything like it. Maybe it's me, but shouldn't a coach decide himself whether he should resign? Parents already want too much of a say at many places. And many places back down to complaining parents. Now we've got a coach asking the parents to decide whether he should go? It's almost comical.

Championships still at the Pete? when is that contract up and will it ever return to Duquesne?

I'm not sure where they will be this year, but I have not heard of moving away from Petersen Center. Let me say two things. We don't know if Duquesne wants them. Secondly, Duquesne isn't big enough for the Friday night and Saturday night crowds nowadays at Petersen. Cooper Fieldhouse capacity at Duquesne is 3,500. Those Friday and Saturday night WPIAL championship games now get 5000 to 6000 fans sometimes. That means turning away a lot of people. Not good. Sometimes when Palumbo would sell out years ago, people would go nuts. And now Cooper is smaller than old Palumbo.

I figured this out. Since PIAA football playoffs started in 1988, only nine WPIAL teams have won a state title and won every postseason game (WPIAL and PIAA) by at least 16 points. One is Avonworth. So yes, the Antelopes were one of the most dominant teams in the past four decades, if you use postseason games as a barometer.
Playing up?

PIAA deadline for voluntarily playing up was Dec, 1. Any word on schools that plan to play up in any sport?

Yes, and PIAA released a partial list recently and I found out some on my own. I reported Sewickley Academy boys basketball will play in 4A. Upper St. Clair boys and girls basketball could be 5A, but both will play in 6A. Central Catholic is actually 5A in enrollment but will play up.

I thought Central Catholic showed exactly what I hoped...that they improved a lot as the season went on.  What do you think they need, other than a down year for St. Joe's, to win a title?

Bottom line: They just weren't as good as La Salle or St. Joe's Prep past fwo years. That's why they didn't win. Central will still be good. QB should be better next year, which will be a big help. La Salle's QB was a big difference. So was Joey O'Brien. Central had nobody like him.

Mike, so many amazing games over the years… Lance jeter against Aliquippa, Terrelle Pryor against BF. What’s the best performance you’ve seen in a WPIAL championship game?

You talking basketball? Well Jeter and Pryor would maybe the top two. Jeter had, what, 37 in that unforgettable win vs. Aliquippa. But Pryor had 39, 24 and 10 against Beaver Falls. And can't forget Tanisha Wright scoring 51 against Blackhawk in 2000. But best performance in a championship I ever saw was 1988 when Carlisle beat Central Catholic and Billy Owens had 53. Incredible. Made 19 of 23 shots. Would rebound on defense, make outlet, beat Central up the court and dunk at other end. Best performance I ever saw in person in one game that was a regular high school game.
