How goes it? Football over. Basketball starting. We can talk state football and lots of hoops. Or anything. First early signing day for football coming up. Store is now open.

Any news on the new coach?
Mike White
12:01
I know nothing.
Basketball is here
12:01
Carrick has some ballers watch out city league
Mike White
12:03
I hear you. 3-0 and beat a decent Montour team last night. I think Westinghouse is worth watching also with the big kid in the middle. But they got walloped by Franklin Regional last night. Franklin Regional is pretty good thought. Allderdice still the class of the city.

what's up with the new signing day 12/20 how does that effect some then others
Mike White
12:04
Well nowadays, most teams have their class complete anyways. Might stop some of the "flipping" that goes on. But it will be interesting to see if some players who have committed choose not to sign.

Mike, I know it's early, but if anyone was at Gateway last night for the game, you sure got your bang for your buck!  Both teams really lit it up... Back and forth action...  Cannot wait for Section play with these teams!  It's not often you see spectacular individual performances from 4 players in the same game!  Can you think of a game where this has happened? The pace was absolutely exhilarating...
Mike White
12:06
I heard it was a great game. Double OT. Both teams in the 90s. But this certainly isn't the first time two teams scored in the 90s. Last  year, I saw an unusual game where two players from opposing teams both scored in the 40s - Nick Smith of North HIlls and Antonio Ionadi from Hampton.

Has there ever been a school win a state championship in football & basketball in the same school year?  I am wondering what you think Quaker Valley's chances are of accomplishing this feat?
Mike White
12:07
Yes there has been. Last from WPIAL was Jeannette. Duquesne came close but lost in the 1994 state basketball championship. Quaker Valley is one of the best in Western Pa. But winning it all?? That's another story. There are these teams from Philly Catholic and Public that aren't too shabby.

12:07
Wondering if you think that the attendance would improve at the PIAA football championships if they were held in the Pittsburgh or Philadephia areas on alternating years instead of Hershey?
Mike White
12:08
I doubt it would improve that much. Biggest problem with attendance at PIAA basketball and football games is when some of these Philly teams make it. Some bring nobody, especially in basketball. Wood and St. Joe's bring people but others don't.
12:10
To follow up D9Dave, attendance at WPIAL championships at Heinz isn't what it used to be, either. It's a weird thing. I notice in the regular season that games attended as well as ever. I usually go to a big game and the crowd usually is excellent. I think students turn out better than ever over the last 5-6-7 years. But for some reason, the playoffs don't seem to draw as well any more for a lot of schools.

Simple questions for you: Is Pine-Richland the best team in WPIAL history? Best large class team ever? Best offense ever? Where do they rank in the all time teams in the State overall and offensively? I think offensively they are #1 in both WPIAL and State History. Too many weapons led by greatest HS QB in PA history. Overall is a little harder. But with how their defense played down the stretch, they would be a tough out.

I have a column on it in Friday's paper. Let's just say I think Phil Jurkovec is the best quarterback I've seen since covering Western Pa. games in 1980. Terrelle Pryor was terrific and I know his fans will disagree. But I said "quarterback." I didn't say "player." Phil is a better passer than Pryor and that makes him a better QB. Phil's not too bad of a runner, either. Those two remind me a little of each other when they run. Yes, Pryor a little faster. But their strides are so long because of their size. As for team, I will only say Pine is among the best in decades. But not "THE BEST."

How do you think Waynesburg guard Darton McIntire projects to college? Is he getting any attention?
Mike White
12:14
Big scorer. But I would think he's small-college material.

Hey Mike!  Coach Hall from Jeannette Coach of The Year in Class A and Robert Kennedy Player of Year in Class for the State?
Mike White
12:14
That will come out in a week or so. I would think they'd have to be. Seems like a no-brainer.

How's Baldwin looking now that Randell transferred?
Mike White
12:17
Sorry but I have no idea who Randell is, what sport he plays or where he transferred, as you say.

Man how the mighty has fallen perennial playoff team beaver falls 0-3 to start the season whats going on down there
Mike White
12:18
New coach (Carliss Jeter). I don't think they have a ton of talent back. I don't think they'll fall as far as the football team did this season.
Kevins
12:18
This may have been one of Coach Hall’s bet coaching jobs!  Lots of good coaches over the years at Jeannette but, Coach Hall is a true Jayhawk!
Mike White
12:20
I agree with you. Thing is, he has had some pretty good teams before also, but Clairton had some that were better. But he bleeds red and blue. Just saw him yesterday at Coaches Corner Luncheon, event that honors WPIAL championship coaches. Good guy, that Roy Hall. But there isn't as much of him to see. The weight he took off with that diet is really something. But he won WPIAL as a player. Won WPIAL and state as an assistant. Now WPIAL and state as head coach.
12:23
Anyone notice the start Robby Carmody is off to this year for Mars. 43 and 44 last two games. He was pretty good in the past, but I think even better this year. Will have story on him in Friday's paper, and his new attitude and new body. He took about 20 pounds since last year. It was weight he wanted to take off.
Kevins
12:26
Come see us in Jeannette for a hoops game this year Mike!  Hawks should be loaded and may be another repeat of 2007-2008 where they won both football and basketball!
Mike White
12:28
Yes, I know Adrian Batts has a good team. But I think Sewickley Academy is still the class of Class 2A right now. And winning states??? Remember there's Constitution and Math, Civics & Sciences and some other strong ones from Eastern Pa.
Joe
12:28
Where do you rank Robby Carmody among other WPIAL hoops players that have gone on to play at the next level with in the last 10 years
Mike White
12:29
Right at the top. Not saying he is THE BEST but he's very good. I don't think most people around here realize how good he is. Maybe they will after this season.
RGW
12:29
Haven't seen Carmody yet this year but if he lost 20lbs he must be jumping out of the gym.  His hops were already good.
Mike White
12:29
Yes indeed. He thinks he jumps even a little higher, which would be impressive.
Tony
12:30
Do you think Mars has a chance to win a state championship?
Mike White
12:32
Of course they have a CHANCE. But not very good chance. Again, teams over east in 5A are really good. Namely Archbishop Wood. As good as they were in football, they might be just as good in hoops. I know they have three players headed to mid-majors. Abington Heights also good and a few others. Will be  hard for WPIAL or City to win one in 6A or 5A these days.
RGW
12:32
It appears Ethan Morton off to a great start also.  Saw he scored a bunch in a game already.  I thought he was passive at times last year as a freshman, but maybe now ready to take over.
Mike White
12:33
No way he was passive last year. He's just cool. That's why I call him "Ice" Morton. And remember, he is a point guard. And I know he wants to get other players involved. He is a big timer. Already Pitt, Wisconsin, Ohio State and others have offered. He's a 6-5 kid who can play the point. I will see him for the first time this season on Friday.
Kevins
12:34
Hey Mike!  Do Phill teams have their own Catholic League for football?  Do u ever see that happening on West half of state?
Mike White
12:35
Yes, they do. It's District 12. Will never happen here. Remember the Catholic League folded in the 1970s and they all joined the WPIAL. They don't want their own league. That's why they joined WPIAL. Besides, who would Central Catholic play in Catholic League. No school close to their enrollment.

D1 player in Carmody, laskey, nedrow, Washington, add in prep school guys fletcher and stone and that not too bad for wpial hoops.  Maybe Aiken can get added to that list.  Has to be most guys in a while.
