I don't know about that. Those Belle Vernon teams were really good under Gary Dongilli. So was West A. There were only 4 classes back then and Belle Vernon was in second-biggest. This year's Belle Vernon defense was tremendous. Had to be non-committal, but it would be a good game.

Just read article about NIL deals for high schoolers. Funny about a small private school coach with D1 prospects worried about this disrupting competition. Best thing might be for AAU to suck up all the stars, and maybe the public schools could go back to a more level playing field.

Yes that was in Post-Gazette. Big time AAU programs already pay for kids expenses, give them gear, and who knows what else? It's not AAU team that will take kids, it's these basketball schools that pop up and take kids from high schools. Already happens a lot.

Ellwood City is 5-0. They have amazing story, too. Joseph Roth is a state record holder in swimming. And he's about to score 1,000 points. Who does this? His brother did both also but isn't at the level of Joseph. I'll have a feature on him later this week.

Yes, they did have some kind of small school. I don't know if school still exists but basketball program apparently doesn't. Coach who started program left before last season. Is now Imani Christian assistant.

Good morning, Mike. Apologies if you've addressed this already, but where in the world were the Southern Columbia administrators, coaches, you know... ADULTS when these awful signs regarding Westinghouse were made? And what are the chances that the PIAA will levy sanctions against Southern Columbia?

First off, no matter how hard a coach tries, you can't monitor everything your players do. Especially you can't stop them from what they do on social media. As for the signs, oh there were adults involved in that. And shame on them. How could you not see "Whip Westinghouse" with a drawn whip not being offensive. Boggles my mind. Unfortunately, kids do stupid things. Always have. Always will. But a total lack of big picture from adults.

Do you think more schools will opt to play down in classification when looking at the success Belle Vernon had? Woodland Hills has to be reconsidering their decision especially with that talented young group they have.

You can't "opt" to play down. Belle Vernon did not "opt" to play down. They are playing where their enrollment placed them. Now you can opt to play "up." And after two years, you can decide if you want to go in the classification where you belong. But it's not a school's choice to play "down." You play where your enrollment places you or you decide to play "up."

Was curious why the PIAA even has rules as they seem to overrule just about every decision the WPIAL makes on transfers.

They overrule them a lot, but sometimes uphold their decisions. Many people on PIAA board in other districts view these things differently than WPIAL. Plus, you have to have evidence - and that's hard to come by.

OK so the whole Southern Columbia thing, do we know if the kids in that video who dropped the racist word are on the Football team ? If they are they need to make significant amends, possibly including being banned from activities for a year. Second the signs. Are we sure the "Whip Westinghouse" wasn't just a bad attempt at alliteration ? I'm guessing the kids or whoever did the sign don't have any idea where Westinghouse is and its demographic makeup. I'd be more concerned if that stuff was occurring during the actual game

Yes, the two Southern Columbia players in video have been suspended from all extracurricular activities for a year. As for the signs? C'mon, man. Don't bury your head in the sand. For an adult to claim "Whip Westinghouse" with a whip drawn might be offensive? Stop it.
