No fancy intros today. Let's just go.

The WPIAL football wins over Imhotep and St Joe's were huge. Do you have any insights on how those Philly all-star schools recruit players?
Mike White
11:02
Really? What a question to start. But no, I'm not in on their recruiting meetings.

Mike any idea what the stats were for LA Pratt over the weekend?  His team won both of their games, I believe.
Mike White
11:05
You're talking about LA Pratt from Lincoln Park, a Duquesne recruit. He had 18 against Kennedy and 30 against East Liverpool. By the way, Liverpool is not in the Premier League.
Bill
11:05
Why does greensburg Salem voluntarily play 6A hoops?
Mike White
11:05
I have no idea. Doesn't make a lot of sense, though, does it. Maybe travel? I don't know.
Bill
11:05
So 4 wpial teams win states. What a weekend. If you had to pick, who are your football favorites for next year? Lot of seniors on these teams who won. I think Penn hills will be very good next year
Mike White
11:10
Mt. Lebanon loses a ton of starters. Penn-Trafford loses key players, but has five starters back on both sides of ball. Watch for Zach Tomosovich, 6-5, 320 sophomore lineman. Aliquippa has I believe eight starters back on both sides of the ball. So they will be good no matter what class, even 5A. They started a sophomore at QB, leading rusher was a freshman, another RB was a freshman and some of the big, beefy linemen will return. Central Valley loses a lot but will always be good. They moved up to 4A. Serra loses a lot. Watch out for Canevin.

11:10
Have you heard any more rumblings about teams moving up or down in classes
Mike White
11:10
I've already reported some of the changes. But we won't know for sure on everything until PIAA releases numbers after the New Years.

Hadn’t seen a D Lineman dominate a state title game like Sean Fitzsimmons since John Malecki for FR in 2005.
Mike White
11:12
Nothing he hasn't done the past two years. Devin Danielson was dominant at times for TJ. And Aaron Donald was very dominant at times for Penn Hills. I saw him have one of the best playoff games every by a DLinemen against Upper St. Clair. They couldn't block him and he was living in the backfield. Just wasn't recruited that heavily I think because some thought he was too small. But FitzSimmons was terrific.
11:13
Post-Gazette Player of the Year will come out Sunday. Top choices would be Sean FitzSimmons, Devin Whitlock, Cade Yacamelli, Eli Heidenreich, maybe Rodney Gallagher. What say you?

is there a possibility that the classification parameters   could change  with the enrollment numbers being submitted
Mike White
11:13
Most definitely.

Told you about Mt. Lebanon in week #1…..Palko changed the complete culture of the program.  Lots of success over the years but he is the real deal.  Congrats to the CAKEEATERS!
Mike White
11:14
Good, can your arm reach your back as you pat yourself? And it didn't take a real genius to know Mt. Lebanon was going to be good this year. This good? I don't know if anyone thought that.
Scam Likely
11:15
Has there ever been schools this close in proximity to each other as CV and Aliquippa both win state championships in the same year? Beaver County football alive and well.
Mike White
11:17
2005 McKeesport and Franklin Regional. Not as close as Central Valley and Quip, but semi-close. But no, Quips and CV are probably closest in same year.

Proposal: Aliquippa vs. Southern Columbia, loser has to move up a classification.
Mike White
11:17
I'll take Quips.
Coach O
11:17
Crazy stat they gave on TV during Southern Columbia-Serra game, 38 years at So Co for Roth as head coach and never has had a losing season. When you have to take what talent is there in your district every year, you’d think there would be some down cycles. Amazing. Do you know if  legendary coaches around here who had long tenure at one school like Render, McCurry, etc came close to no losing seasons?
Mike White
11:19
Render and McCurry had losing seasons. Not many. Cherpak has never had losing season. Neither did Mike Zmijanac until he left Aliquippa.

Mike would you of predicted this WPIAL dominance in State's? PCN did a good job. Listening to your podcast you mention players of the year. I would have to give it to both Tecza and Eli from Lebo. They might go down as the best duo in WPIAL history. Look at the BIG games first game again Central, WPIAL finals and State Championship game that's where that Tecza kid shined. He took over in the 4th qtr in State Championship game. Eli took over the North Allegheny, McDowell and State College game  Talking with a buddy in Lebo about Teska what's more impressive than  the kid had zero fumbles with that amount of touches so impressive. Great season for WPIAL and look fwd to your updates in Bball.
Mike White
11:21
Yes, it was a good year for WPIAL, but let's put things in perspective, please. Not to downplay what WPIAL did, but there are six classifications now. WPIAL won three last year and three in 2017. Also won three a few times when there were only four classes. So it's not like this is unbelievable.

Big game tonite NH/Butler. Who you got. NH very improved says the scorekeeper.
Mike White
11:22
I'm not picking a winner but it should be a really good game. Best scorer in WPIAL without taking a ton of shots. It's Devin Carney. Can drop 40 on you easily. North Hills is very good this year. Both have been impressive in first two games. With Pine-Richland (No. 1) losing to USC and North Hills beating No. 3 Fox Chapel Saturday, the winner of this game very likely will be No. 1 ranked in 6A in new rankings.
Punkie
11:23
NH boys really put it to FC.  Is FC that bad or is NH that good?
Mike White
11:23
No, Fox Chapel isn't bad. They are going to be just fine. North Hills did play very well and North Hills is pretty good. Plus, it was at North Hills.
Football guy
11:23
How many transfer did Aliquippa have last year?
Mike White
11:24
No idea. I just know they have had more than the required three over the past two years.
Mike
11:25
Mike, who’s your pick coming out of 4-A girls now the NC moved down to 3-A? Early guess
Mike White
11:26
Wait, North Catholic was 3A last year - and are again this year. As for 4A this year, we have Southmoreland No. 1.

I saw Char Valley Boys dropped their first 2 games this weekend and have a tough game tonight at Quaker Valley.  Do you expect them to still be pretty good regardless of this tough start?
Mike White
11:27
They lost a lot and their top scorer is a good freshman guard. He's small, but he's good. I think they will be OK, but I wouldn't pick them to go to WPIAL final like they did last year.
Ryan
11:27
what do you think about the Kiski boys basketball team so far in a good section with Latrobe and Franklin regional 2-0 to start the season
Mike White
11:28
We shall see. They beat Derry and Burrell. That doesn't tell a lot. They are in section with Penn Hills and Gateway. They are both very good. Let's talk again after they play those two.

As a Mt. Lebo football alumnus, I had the good fortune to speak with Coach Palko in the run-up to the State College game. He oozed warmth, grace and, most importantly, humility. It's often said that teams are a direct reflection of their head coach, and that axiom fits this Lebo team perfectly. We haven't had a gentleman in this position since Mr. Walker left, and look at the results. Thanks, Mike, for your reporting which showed your readers the man, not just the football coach.
Mike White
11:29
He's one of the best ever - in so many ways. One of best motivators of young men ever. Heck, many times after I talk to him, I am motivated.
