I'm not here to cut down Aquinas or Vinnie Cugini. It is what it is. Aquinas is a very small school. Tiny. Do you want them to play 6A teams? I don't think it would be much of a game. Aquinas isn't even one of the top 2 or 3 Class 1A teams. I have no problem with their competition. They're playing similar teams in size. It's just some of those teams are just awful. But I do think people would like to see them play made some decent 2A or 3A teams in non-section. Oh well.

5A seems to have a lot of very good team this year.  Who has been most impressive so far this year?
Mike White
11:43
I still think Penn Hills is the team to beat. But I think 5A is undoubtedly the best class, as far as the number of quality teams.

When do you start putting scoring averages up?
Mike White
11:44
A little after the new year. We have to get leading scorers from every team first - and then we will keep track. Of course, there will be coaches who don't respond to emails and won't give us leading scorers. Happens all the time. We can't print what we don't know.

North Allegheny beat Erie too.  Erie may have kids in and out of the line up.  Speaking of NA, what is going on with them?  Injuries or just not very good?
Mike White
11:47
Only watched NA on film. I think they are still learning how to play together. One game I watched, NA didn't press much, which is what Dave DeGregorio likes to do. It will be interesting to see what happens with them as season progresses.

Looks like Palmieir is getting some college attention.  Why did it take so long?  Is he small?
Mike White
11:49
He's only about 5-10 or so. Although he throws a decent ball, 5-10 running quarterbacks from WPIAL generally don't get recruited much. Patriot and Ivy League schools now showing interest. That's a good level for him, as a defensive back. He's just a player, man. Not five-star prospect. Just a player. Big-time colleges want more size and more speed. I think he might have nice career in the Patriot or Ivy.

Is Phil Jurkovic making a mistake coming to Pitt?  Did he have any other colleges interested in him?  Why does he keep jumping schools?
Mike White
11:51
Why would it be a mistake? Seems like a good fit. Yes, he said he had some Power Fives interested in him. Pitt seems like good situation. With Slovis leaving, they need QB. He has former relationship with Frank Cignetti from BC. He has one more year of eligibility and I don't think BC will be very good. He was getting killed last year. Line was awful at BC and no running game. Yes, he has things to prove, but why not come to Pitt?

Why is there a disconnect between WPIAL eligibility rulings and the PIAA?
Mike White
11:52
Because the PIAA board is made up of reps from all 12 districts around the state. Other districts don't see things the way the WPIAL does sometimes with transfers.

What about Shea Champine? He’s so underrated and is receiving interest from d2 schools but possible May end up bigger?
Mike White
11:53
I don't know about "bigger." I've seen him. I like him. He'll have a big year. I think D2 might be a nice fit for him.

So how do these tournaments in far off places work ? Does the Athletic Department of the school pay the whole tab or are hoopers out selling hoagies like the band does ?
Mike White
11:55
Athletic departments pay none of this. The teams raise the money themselves and pay. They have fundraisers and might get donations from some other people. The booster clubs raise the money. With school budgets nowadays and so many athletic teams, no way an athletic department in WPIAL will fund a trip out of state for holiday tournament.

Do you have any issue with who Imani schedules for non conference games? They have single A enrollment but based on who they are bringing in are not a single A caliber team. Is there a team in their section that will keep the game within the mercy rule? Is there a single A school in the WPIAL that will keep it within a 10 point game?
Mike White
11:57
Imani is in section with Aquinas Academy, Neighborhood Academy, Hillel Academy, Summit Academy and St. Joseph's. Enough said. But remember, there are many public schools that don't want to play them or be in their section. Do you blame them? They're not under the same set of rules as Imani.

Are there any 9th grade girls basketball teams anymore?
Mike White
11:58
Fifth Avenue or General Braddock. Sam Clancy V and Hosea Champine VI are supposed to be outstanding. I hear they are in 3rd grad playing up on the ninth-grade team.
11:59
And with that, let's say goodbye and Merry Christmas to everyone. It's been fun this year - and we'll keep it going. Everyone, be good and healthy.
