I like Gateway, kids and staff seem resilient. Outlook on the 5A match.?   Still hard to believe this is Gateway's first trip to Chocolate Town.

First off you have to understand that all those great Gateway teams under Pete Antimarino were before the state playoffs began. PIAA playoffs started in 1988. Pete's last season was 1989. As for the game, Gateway will have hands full. But they have moved the ball and scored on just about everyone this year. Granted, they maybe haven't faced a team like Archbishop Wood. Don Holl has done a tremendous job at Gateway. I think key is how does Gateway stand up to Wood's physical brand of ball.

Mike, In 6A, any teams you feel turning the corner from last year?  Or can we expect the usual suspects come playoff time? Anyone up and coming I guess is a better way to put it...

Watch for Seneca Valley this year. DIdn't make playoffs last year but beat Pine. They have some size and experience, plus they get David Ritchie this year. He can play. A 6-1 guard transferred from tiny Eden Christian. Ruled ineligible last year. He is good.

Hard to believe this is 30th state championship in PA high school football history. Is Darelle Revis' 5-TD title game the top performance in your opinion, or another?

Yep probably say so. He did so many different things also that day. But had greatest three days of any high school athlete I have ever heard. Had that great state championship football game on a Sunday (game was postponed one day because of snow). Then on a Tuesday, scored like 38 in an OT win over Beaver Falls in hoops. That is surreal.

Hey Mike....Long time reader, first time poster.  Any news on how the old section 4 AAAA teams will be this season?  Would like to check out some games but now sure how the Char Valley, USC, Lebo,....etc will be this season
Mike White
12:53
Char Valley 5A. Lebo and USC are 6A. Char Valley is a little down. Only one player back with varsity experience. They will be young but by end of season something tells me they will be decent. Lebo could be a sleeper. Everyone talks about the North section and also Penn Hills, Latrobe, Fox Chapel in east section. Don't forget Woodland Hills, either. They should be decent. But Lebo could make some noise. I know Danny Holzer at USC thinks his team is much improved from a year ago.

Wow, ya, forgot about what he did on the hardcourt after state title game. Legendary! I wish football title games were 31 years old...would've loved for the rest of the state to have gotten a taste of North Hills 1987. Best these eyes have ever seen.

No doubt. No. 1 in country. First team defense didn't give up a point. Would've liked to maybe see 1987 North HIlls against a Central Bucks West. Eric Renkey on that NH team. One of best defensive players I have ever seen in high school. One intense dude on field, great off it. Went to Penn St. Injuries hurt him and so did weight problem. But in high school, he was as good as defensive player in Western Pa. in past three decades. I still remember how Jack Ham loved him.

Any word on the recruitment of Drew Saxton? A division 3 recruit or anything bigger than that?

He told me around Thanksgiving most likely would go to Case Western. Good level for him.

Mike White

Never forget N Hill going "live" in pregame...full contact O vs D. Talk about intimidating. And in all fairness to rest of state, I think Aliquippa getting upset by Berwick in 3A title game in 87 is one of the biggest upsets that have flown under historic radar.

I don't quite agree with that. Berwick super program. Had a big-time QB in Jake Kelchner. Other D-1 players. I think that game was even matchup going in. I was there. Cold Saturday in Hersheypark Stadium. Quips got totally outplayed. I don't consider that a big upset. Just that this side of the state may not have known that much about Berwick.
Well everyone that's it for now. Good stuff. We'll go back to Tuesday at 11 next week. Everyone be good.
