I was asked how the Dodgers can win and have elite prospects while the Pirates lose and do not. That's a narrower question than the Pirates' overall problems, so I gave a narrower answer.

Do we know if the Pirates spent all of their international pool cap money this year?
Bill Brink

The international signing period runs from July 2 to the following June 15, so we won't know for a bit. I'm currently looking up what they spent in the most recent signing period and will report back.

I know Brink wrote an excellent article on the upcoming new Bucs TV deal negotiations. Have any of you thought of the possibility of the network acquiring the new TV rights requiring a clause from Nutting that the Pirates maintain a minimum payroll - - say of 70% of the MLB average? That way we Pirates fans may have a competitive to watch on TV!!

That would be an interesting twist in the negotiations, for sure. I have not thought about that, and I can't think of anything similar to that, and I feel as though that would cause a breakdown in negotiations.

Question about the timing of the single trade deadline in general. There are still four weeks until the playoff rosters need to be finalized by the contenders in which time there could be a number of key players who go down with injuries. Under the old system, teams had until the end of August to make a trade and address those late injuries. So my question is this: have you heard any thought to moving the trade deadline to mid-August? Splitting the difference might be a safeguard against the late season injuries.

Can you guys confirm the Pirates didn’t make any other trades today aside from Dickerson?

All sides will evaluate how it worked out this season. I enjoy having a single deadline. It forces teams to figure out who they are sooner and that streamlines the process.

With the season pretty much a wash who are some young guys we could see called up in September to be excited about?
Bill Brink

I'd love to see Ke'Bryan Hayes play defense at the major league level. This season has been tough for him, but it's his first in Class AAA and he is trending back toward his April numbers in July, a month in which he has four homers after one in each of the first three months. And it'd be nice to see Mitch Keller get three starts in a row, see how he adjsuts.

Alright, gang. I'm signing off. Good talk.

Thank you.  I'm skeptical on this international pool money because it seems I have heard that the Pirates seldom bid on the big name international players.  Why is that if they have as much or more international pool money as the teams who do bid and sign the big name players?

I'm glad the Buccos got what is essentially $$ for Dickerson.  What every real Pirate fan wants is for the owner to make lots of money.

Pool money isn't actual money. Pool money is the opportunity to spend money and the Pirates acquired the ability to spend $250,000 more than they could before. We'll see how it plays out.
