What's going on, everyone? Nesbitt is parking or something. Notoriously unreliable, that one. I see some questions already, but we're ready for more.
12:03
There's like ... four hours to kill. Maybe more. This should be something.
12:04
The non-Kela news of the day, via Brink, is that the Pirates are in on Chris Archer in "significant fashion." Pretty weird!
Tim
12:04
If the Pirates were to get Chris Archer, how much better do you think the team is, with him and Kela onboard?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:06
Hey, I'm here.
12:07
Let me tell you, Bill Brink knows a thing or two about fashion.
Sean Gentille
12:07
I think the question is kind of "Can Chris Archer pitch up to his peripherals?" Because if he can, they're better by a good margin. A 3.62 xFIP is better than any starter, other than Taillon.
12:08
But that's been the book on him for years now. Even if he can't, he still makes them better. Immediately.
12:09
Archer, even post 2015-Cy run, has a 4.00-ish ERA with very obvious potential for more. You take that.
JJ
12:10
Jon Heyman says Pirates definitely still in mix for Archer. U think that’s a real possibility of bringing him to Pittsburgh?
Sean Gentille
12:10
Who is Jon Heyman? I'm a Bill Brink man.
john rambo
12:11
guess the still unnamed player to complete Kela deal.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:11
Bligh Madris.
Sean Gentille
12:12
"William Brink."
Jim NYC
12:12
Is Mitch Keller for sure in the Archer package? Is that something you are in favor of? I'm not sure, afterall Archer is not a #1 SP
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:14
As far as I've seen, no such package has been made public. If I'm the Rays, I'm demanding the offer start with one of the Pirates' top pitching prospects. That's Keller territory, but maybe Shane Baz. The Pirates aren't going to part with Keller unless they're certain this pitcher is going to be the difference this year. I'm not convinced Archer is the difference for them this year, and I doubt they are too. I think they'd be much more likely to give up a prized position-player prospect than Keller.
12:15
Archer is a No. 1 pitcher, but maybe in the way Gerrit Cole was a No. 1 pitcher and nobody here liked to say that.
Jim NYC
12:15
Do you think we can get any value for Cervelli? Do you think he's the Pirates' best catcher or has Diaz surpassed him?
Sean Gentille
12:15
Who actually needs Cervelli, at this point? The thing about catchers is that if you're good, you probably have one already. No contender needs a catcher, let alone one dealing with concussions. Might as well just keep him.
12:16
Also, I think the bulk of all middle-aged moms in the fanbase would revolt at a Cervelli trade.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:16
I don't think anyone is giving up the farm for a catcher who had four concussions in the past year. He's best served staying with the Pirates and being an insurance policy paired with Elias Diaz while he gets things sorted out. He should test out first base.
JJ
12:17
U know exactly who Heyman is. And that’s no disrespect towards Bill Brink
Sean Gentille
12:17
More like Jon Who-man!!!
(Yes, I know who he is, that was a joke.)
Chris Vegas
12:17
Archer can basically knock off an earned run and add a few strikeouts to his k/9 by going to the NL.
Sean Gentille
12:18
That's a good point. People are making the same one about Gausman, etc. You hear it so much that it gets kind of annoying, but it's grounded in reality.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:19
Archer was a strikeout machine the past few years. The Pirates could use one of those. He's been quite a bit better away from the Trop recently too.
12:20
Jim
12:20
Archer and Schoop. Couldn't get better than that.
Sean Gentille
12:20
^^Everyone asking about Archer, read that link. There are a lot of you.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:21
Schoop was batting .197 on July 1!
Bobby
12:21
Archer is obviously the big name, but if they don’t get him, is there another SP you could see them adding before today’s deadline?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:23
I'm pretty firmly in the camp today of thinking the Pirates are going to add a starting pitcher today, but only one at least another year remaining under contract. Bringing on a rental doesn't make much sense — unless it's a reliever. I think Archer and Gausman make a lot of sense.
Sean Gentille
12:24
And that's directly in line with Kela, obviously. It lets them have their cake and eat it too. They're fortunate that the best guys on the market have years of control left, and it seems like that could pay off in a real way.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:25
Here's the problem with the Pirates: Next year always looks great. It's the same this year. If they're willing to add a little payroll and people stay healthy, it's a promising roster next year, and the next year, and the next year. So how do they keep that intact while giving this year's team an extra boost?
Sean Gentille
12:25
And while we're talking about other reports, Joel Sherman said Archer was a 7 on a 1-10 scale of likeliness to get moved today. This was a couple hours ago.
Tony H
12:25
Any talk on Sonny Gray to the Pirates now that NYY has added more SP
Sean Gentille
12:26
Gray has one year of arb left, then is a UFA after 2019. Seems like an issue.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:27
Another interesting one. The Yankees clearly are going for it, and their team is loaded. But they picked up Lance Lynn yesterday, and Sonny is a little expendable. He has one year of arbitration left, so there's a chance the Yankees could sell low on him today. But, again, starting pitching never comes cheap, and you need protection in case of injuries. I think it's worth the Pirates asking. I don't know that they'll like what they hear.
