That's part of why getting him makes sense. Same goes for Kela. They'll have value if the team stinks and needs rebuilt next year.

If the Rays trade Archer and have already moved on from Eovaldi, the only starter I can name on their squad is Blake Snell. Perhaps they are going to pitch their ace once a week and then have 12 relievers to take their "bullpenning" to a new level.

To me, Mercer was perfect for a low payroll team.  Just good enough to make it, which kept his price down.  A position they were able to save money and get steady, if not spectacular performance.
