MLBTR 2022-23 Offseason Chat: Oakland Athletics

I think they'll sign someone who'll be the favorite for ninth inning work.
And probably trade that person in July if it goes well

How many guys do the A's trade this year? Who are the bigger names we see them trade?
Steve Adams
3:05
I expect Murphy to go this offseason. I don't feel strongly that anyone else WILL be traded before Opening Day, but none of Kemp, Puk, Irvin, Brown or Laureano would shock me.

By midseason or during the 2023-24 offseason, I think the entirety of that group could go.

In the current a's beat newsletter they addressed potential outfield buy low options of Gallo. Myers, D Smith and Edwin Rios. I anticipate Myers will get a contract for more than A's would be willing to extend. What are your feelings on the other 3 as options. What could Gallo command
Steve Adams
3:07
I think Myers and Gallo are both one-year deal guys, with Gallo getting more money.

Any of that group seems fine to me, though Rios' middling walk rate and sky-high strikeout rate aren't my cup of tea, personally. He'd have additional years of control remaining, though, and that could/should appeal to the A's.
Rotation
3:07
Blackburn-Irvin-Kaprelian-Waldichuk-Sears and maybe Puk ??
Steve Adams
3:08
Think you'll see at least one veteran starter brought in. Irvin, Blackburn and Kap are probably locks (Kap because he's out of options), and one of Sears/Waldichuk is a good bet as the No. 5 guy. It's kind of a moot point who's in the rotation on Opening Day, as injuries, poor performance and trades are going to alter the composition over the course of the season.

Breaking news Aaron judge wants to sleep in his race car bed in his childhood home.  Signs with the A's for league minimum.
Steve Adams

The image of Judge sleeping in a kid's racecar bed is fairly amusing.

What would it take for the Cards to get Murphy?
Steve Adams
3:13
I imagine the A's would be asking about Jordan Walker and Masyn Winn early, though that'd be a pretty sizable ask. If the Cards caved and included either, I doubt the rest of the package would be all that meaningful.

In keeping with the A's ostensible preference for MLB-ready guys, however ... Nolan Gorman, Matthew Liberatore and a few lower-caliber prospects? Gorman's path to a regular role is a bit limited at this point, and the Cards have plenty of depth to move Liberatore.

I generally try to avoid picking out too many specific names, because it's all so dependent on how one team views one players -- and that can vary wildly in either direction from general industry consensus. But something like that seems at least plausible.

Sean Murphy is an Athletic, is he not?!

What is there to look forward to next season? Between the current roster, lacking farm system, the stadium situation and a greedy ownership group, what hope is there for OAK?
Steve Adams
3:16
In terms of the overall product on the field, there's not a ton, and it sucks that any fanbase will have to deal with that reality. In times like this -- or early in other long-term rebuilds -- I think the best thing to do is focus on individuals. There will be some interesting players to watch, some on an everyday level. If Langeliers gets the regular catching job at some point, and if Waldichuk begins to cement himself as a big league starter, those are important notes for the future and also just fun individual perfomances to track

Do you see the A's buying prospects by taking on a final year of an albatross contract?
Steve Adams
3:17
I think they should, to an extent. Not sure they will. But if you can get some a decent prospect from the Phillies by bailing them out from the final year of Scott Kingery's deal, go for it. Similar idea with the Mariners and Evan White.

Oakland's not taking on Patrick Corbin, Aaron Hicks, Madison Bumgarner or any of the giant albatross deals, but some smaller-scale contracts like that from win-now teams with rapidly growing payrolls... sure, help 'em out and buy a prospect.
3:18
Again, that's what I think they should do. I doubt they will. In general, the idea of "buying" a prospect in this regard is more popular in theory than in practice. Teams don't do it very often.

I know your tired of the Sean Murphy questions. But what team has the best chance to give what A's are looking for?
Steve Adams
3:19
Would not be surprised if legitimately 50% of the questions asked -- and there have been hundreds!! -- have been about Murphy, haha.
3:20
I think the Cardinals are my favorite fit for him, but the Rays, Twins, Red Sox and D-backs are among the others that I find logical.

Alright I've got to wrap this up. Again, apologies on the delayed nature of the A's chat, but thanks for being patient and thanks for joining! Sorry for all the questions I can't get to, even in this more niche setting. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve if you're so inclined and always happy to take more questions there.
