It's just challenging to get deals done for major pieces at this point. If you're the White Sox and Cardinals, say, you're still trying to turn things around and get back in the race. By mid-June, I think teams feel a lot more comfortable going into sell mode if they're far enough back in the division

Who was your favorite player growing up and why?  What player today is a similar player?
Simon Hampton
11:01
I started following baseball back home in NZ about 2010-11ish I think. Enjoyed following the Pirates resurgence and McCutchen circa 2012-14 was one of the best players to watch in the sport then

Peralta plays for the Dodgers, not the Yankees.

Wandy Peralta

Hey Simon! No question- just wanted to say that I’m loving the podcast so far! Keep up the good work
Simon Hampton

Thanks, Matt!

Yoshida looks incredible! Does he have a chance of AL ROY?
Simon Hampton
11:05
Walking more than he strikes out, showing more and more power - he'll be right in the hunt if he keeps this up for sure.

On another note, should 29-year-olds who've been a pro for years (albeit not in the US) be eligible for Rookie of the Year?
Bea Arthur
11:08
Who's in more trouble, White Sox or Cardinals?
Simon Hampton
11:08
Both in trouble, but I see more talent on the Cardinals to turn this around
CJ

Justin Steele has been absolutely lights out so far this year.  I know he can’t keep up this pace for a full season but what do you think is a reasonable end of season stat line for him and will he be in the CY Young conversation this season?
Simon Hampton
11:11
He's been tremendous, and think maybe a low-3s ERA for him. That'd get him Cy Young votes probably, but I wonder if innings may come into it at some point. His career high is 119, and, particularly if the Cubs are in playoff contention, they may not want to run that count too high
Chet Lemon
11:14
Do you see the cubs trading Bellinger at the deadline? They have PCA as the next CF, would the best strategy to sell high on Bellinger?
Simon Hampton
11:16
The Cubs are 16-16 and it may not take that many wins to take out the NL Central this year. They're no lock to be selling at the deadline. And even if they do sell to some extent, they've shown there's talent on this team and if this is Bellinger going forward then maybe they'd explore an extension?
Lt Data
11:17
Each of the last three years, the Yankees have added to their team a player with years of data showing they simply aren’t good at baseball (Odor, IKF, Franchy).   These players then have gone on to be absolutely terrible and harmful to the team.  Why does a supposedly smart organization do things like this?
Simon Hampton
11:19
While the IKF trade was a terrible one in hindsight, those players are not really the problem. The problem is that injuries thrust them into roles of far more significance than they should be getting.

If Franchy Cordero is your fifth outfielder waiting at Triple-A, that's completely fine. If he's your everyday left-fielder and you're trying to win the AL East, it's a problem. Same with IKF off the bench v starting most games in center. Same with Brito in the rotation.

Do you think the os will be buyers
Simon Hampton
11:21
I'd feel very sorry for Orioles fans if they're not buyers this summer after the start they've made
Alright handful more then I'll have to wrap up

Which fanbase would you say is the most impatient?  The most entitled?
Simon Hampton
11:25
I try and avoid criticizing particular fan groups. At the end of the day, they spend their disposable income on their team and it's not really up to me to say they're being impatient if they're forking out money.

With that being said, I do always notice the Yankees' WS drought since 2009 being mentioned, when 20 other teams also haven't won a ring since 2009 (or much longer in many cases)

11:26
Wouldn't the Cardinal's be stupid to trade Montgomery instead of signing him? Maybe he's not bad enough for their rotation.
Simon Hampton
11:27
I agree Ryan, I think they'd be better served re-signing him - and they will have to re-sign some starting pitching.

Although if they're out of the race they've also got to see what trades are out there, as he could wind up being one of the best rental starters available
Dbacks
11:28
I love the Dbacks exciting, aggressive young team, but feel like the starting pitching will be a little too inconsistent with so many young arms in the rotation. Do you think they can get to 86 wins and be in the WC conversation?
Simon Hampton
11:31
Love the Diamondbacks future. Think they're a good shout for third in that division with 80-85 wins, with a bit of upside for more. I hear you on the rotation, but Kelly looks good, Gallen will win the NL Cy Young if he keeps this up and Pfaadt has tons of potential. Would love to see them add a veteran mid-rotation arm and have a crack this season - fun team for sure
11:32
Alright gotta wrap this up now. Thanks to everyone that submitted questions and sorry to those that I didn't get to - a lot of great questions in here as always.
