Going to $225MM under the previous system (assuming you're a first-time payor) only costs you an extra $3MM. The difference between 225 and 228 really isn't that great
2:55
I think it's only a meaningful deterrent for teams that wanted to stop around $220MM anyways. At that point, then the escalating penalties for repeat payor becomes notable enough you might as well not have exceeded $210MM at all
Paul DeJong
2:55
Could he be part of a package heading to Oakland for a pitcher, or would Oakland have no interest in him?
Anthony Franco
2:56
Doubt Oakland wants to take on a $6MM+ salary this winter
I think it's a reasonable number for DeJong, just not one the A's would find especially attractive if they're already trying to cut a bunch of money
Rangers Optimist
2:57
do you see the rangers continuing to be active in the market or are they most likely standing pat after throwing around so much already?
Anthony Franco
2:57
Seems like they'd love to land Kershaw if he wants to go there. I think they'll be open to further pitching additions
2:58
Maybe they're a dark-horse fit for Tyler Glasnow? Take on some money in 2022 while he rehabs in hopes he returns to ace-caliber form the year after while you try to push for legitimate contention
Brady
2:58
Who makes the playoffs first; Phillies or Mariners?
Anthony Franco
2:58
Tough one. I think they might just both be playoff teams next year
2:59
I'll go Seattle but they're both right there, particularly if the playoff field expands to seven per league
Dbacks hopeful
2:59
Thanks for the chat Anthony! Are the Diamondbacks better than the Rockies right now? Obviously assuming positive regression for players not named Bumgarner? And possibly even the Padres if they have another 2021? DBacks aren't actually a 50-win team right?
Anthony Franco
3:00
I think they're better than Colorado but nowhere near the Padres. They're not 50 wins bad but even if some of the young position players take a step forward and the rotation has better health, they're probably around 70 wins
Chaim Bloom
3:00
Do you see the red sox signing Greinke for 5th spot, story for infield and two bullpen arms or do they bargain basement again?
Anthony Franco
3:00
I don't know that Greinke does a whole lot there but I do think they land one notable position player (Story, Bryant, Schwarber, maybe Suzuki) and some bullpen help
Miggys bat
3:01
Who makes their MLB debut faster, Spencer Torkelson or Riley Green?
Anthony Franco
3:01
I'd guess Tork but think they're both in the majors by mid-May
Ryan
3:01
When the lockout ends, what team is going to be the most active in that first week or two?
Anthony Franco
3:02
Probably Oakland, given that they haven't traded anybody yet
ooklah the mok
3:02
Have seen some rumblings that the Phillies should trade minor league p's  Abel/Painter for mlb talent...Please tell me how wrong that is.....
Anthony Franco
3:03
I wouldn't rule it out entirely, although that's obviously not the same thing as saying I'd be dead-set on making a deal. They're a win-now team with arguable needs at two infield spots, two outfield positions and in the bullpen
3:04
And there's a lot of developmental risk with teenage pitchers. Would I move either for a rental? Maybe not. But as part of a deal to get Matt Chapman for two years? Sure
Hawt Bayb
3:04
Wouldn't Tatis in the OF solve a lot of problems for the Padres?  Start Kim at SS.  Better SS defense, and less risk for Tatis.
Anthony Franco
3:05
Probably but Tatís clearly wants to play shortstop and I think that overrules whatever marginal upgrade your defense gets otherwise

Hey Anthony!  Lots of opinions in the comments regarding the Giants withholding permission for Andrew Bailey to interview with the Mets for the bench coach gig.  I am happy that the Giants said “no” but what do you think?  Was it fair of the Giants to prevent the interview?  Do you think a move from pitching coach to bench coach is a promotion or a lateral move?  Thanks!
Anthony Franco
3:06
I don't think it's really a step up, although I guess it's variable organization to organization. But generally speaking, I think of bench/hitting/pitching coaches as all being roughly the same level of importance
Evan White
3:06
Do I still have a future in Seattle?
Anthony Franco
3:07
They'd be open to giving him another look but I think he'll have to earn it at Triple-A first
jawncarlo
3:07
what are the chances of any member of the phillies’ ‘08 championship team making the hall of fame? or will j-roll and utley join ryan howard in the hall of very good?
Anthony Franco
3:07
Hmm, Utley feels like he might eventually get in, but I haven't considered it too closely
3:08
I think Rollins is indeed a Hall of Very Good guy, which isn't a slight. Awesome player

3:09
If the Phillies do sign schwarber, do you think it's sustainable to run Vierling, Moniak Haseley et al in cf...?
Anthony Franco
3:09
Still think you want to at least get somebody like Manuel Margot or Víctor Robles
25 year old major league rookie
3:09
Why am I not interested in free agency at 29.5. I just lost of year of develop because of Covid.

Why should I be happy I don't hit free agency until 31 so Juan Soto can make millions of more dollars.....that in the end, is millions less than what is available to me?
Anthony Franco
3:10
Sure, there are definitely players for whom 29.5 year free agency would be a big help
Someone like Mike Yastrzemski would be much better off in that kind of system
3:12
Yet the record-setting deals are going to the guys who hit free agency at 27, who were usually top prospects and immediate superstars, and the union's not going to give up two or three years of those guys' earning power at $35MM+ a year to add a few million bucks here or there for the Yastrzemski types
3:13
I think the MLBPA sees a hybrid service/age model as the best solution overall, but you're right that players' interests aren't unanimously aligned on this kind of stuff
ooklah the mok
3:13
What's your take on 2021 breakout Ranger Suarez's ceiling/floor...? I say low 2 to a high 4...
Anthony Franco
3:13
Agreed, think he's a good, mid-rotation guy
