Would it make sense for me to offer Kris Bryant a 5 year/$150M deal?  I can put him at 3B, and move Bregman to SS. Or I trust Pena to be Correa's successor, and put Bryant in RF, moving to Tucker to CF.  Keep in mind both Brantley (LF) and Guriel (1B) are FAs after the 2022 season, so Bryant's versatility is a huge bonus for my team.

(James Click is Astros' GM)
5:19
I see what you're getting at, but Click has already cast doubt on the chances of moving Bregman back to shortstop, and I think that might be getting a little too cute. I'd rather just go after Story if that kind of money's there and address the position directly

When a new agreement is reached what three things do you think will be included?  Universal DH?  Realignment plans?
Anthony Franco
5:20
Universal DH, playoff expansion (hopefully to 12 instead of 14 teams), pitch clock
frank
5:20
Who plays RF for the Red Sox in 2022?
Anthony Franco
5:21
I think I'd peg them as the landing spot for Schwarber if we were doing predictions today
Schwarber plays LF with Verdugo kicked back to right

Please tell me Dom Smith is getting traded
Anthony Franco
5:22
I think both and J.D. Davis are more likely than not to be traded before the start of the season
Conforto
5:22
Where am I going?
Anthony Franco
5:23
I had him in Milwaukee at the start of the offseason but Renfroe seems to take that off the table. The White Sox are the best fit on paper, but I'm unconvinced they'll spend enough given their other payroll commitments
5:24
Phillies make a ton of sense, Rockies want to add an outfielder, Padres and Guardians could fit but have payroll questions of their own
If asked to pick a favorite right now, I guess I'd go Philaldelphia

5:24
What is a better value? Freddie Freeman at 30 mil. Or Matt Olson and a pitcher like Rodon for 15-20 mil? What would you do if you were GM
Anthony Franco
5:25
In a vacuum I'd rather have Olson/Rodón than Freddie, but Olson probably requires parting with two of your best prospects
So it really depends on whether the long-term financial outlook is one that could support just spending on Freeman instead

5:25
Why wouldn’t the Pirates trade BReynolds now. Load up with prospects. There were at least 2-3 years away from even sniffing a .500 record. Thoughts
Anthony Franco
5:26
I get the thinking, and I'd at least be genuinely open to offers if I were in their shoes. But eventually, you do have to anchor around some core pieces, ideally position players since they're less likely to get hurt than pitchers
5:27
If you continually trade away your stars, it becomes hard to ever emerge from the rebuild
Marc D.
5:27
Speaking of third base for the Mariners more likely Story, Bryant or trade for Chapman,
Anthony Franco
5:27
I'd peg the likelihood as Bryant, Story, Chapman in that order
Billy
5:28
In his article the other day Have Certain free agent former MLB stars Played Their Last Game? didn't  Tim Dierkes forget to mention Matt Carpenter?
Anthony Franco
5:28
I don't think it was meant to be an exhaustive list. Sure, you could put Carpenter in that bucket

Can teams sign players to minor league deals with the tacit understanding that they'll become Major League deals when the lockout ends?
Anthony Franco
5:30
That's prohibited. The league will veto anything it thinks is an end-around on the lockout (and probably have an earful for the club that tries it)
5:31
Could you do a wink and a nod deal with a middle reliever or utility guy who's a fringe big league deal candidate anyways? Maybe. But it's probably not worth the risk and anyone better than that is just going to be obvious to the league
Chicken Stan Lee
5:31
Percent chance the Yanks are just going to roll with Urshela at SS and fill other holes?
Anthony Franco
5:31
I think they'll do something at shortstop, even if they don't go big. Urshela just shouldn't be playing there everyday for a hopeful contender
5:32
Cashman specifically said at the start of the offseason they needed to address shortstop, so I don't think he feels like Urshela fits there regularly either. Even if it's just a trade for Nick Ahmed or someone, they need somebody who's a better defender than what they've got there
Jacob Stallings
5:32
Did the Pirates make the right move trading me?
Anthony Franco
5:33
Yeah I think the Stallings deal was a good one for both sides. I'm pretty intrigued by Zach Thompson, I like the idea of taking a flier on Connor Scott
5:34
And Miami needed catching help for immediate contention. If Stallings were controllable four more years and 27, the Pirates probably don't trade him. But at age 32, I don't know that they can reasonably expect him to still be good in 2024 or whatever
Boog Clemente
5:34
Do you think the new CBA will make it more difficult for teams to tank?
Anthony Franco
5:34
I think there'll be some disincentives introduced but teams are still going to rebuild
5:35
Even if you take out the higher draft picks and bigger international bonus pools (or higher international draft picks, if that happens), you're not going to legislate out teams trading big leaguers for prospects
5:37
Nor should you. The league as a whole has to go .500 every year. Some teams are going to be terrible, whether they intend to or not. So while you do want to disincentivize deliberate losing, some teams are always going to be in better position to trade present value for future considerations
Rick Hahn
5:37
Who would be a good potential second base trade candidate for the White Sox?
Anthony Franco
5:38
Jeff McNeil, maybe the Phillies move Jean Segura. The Rays have enough infield depth they might consider a deal there, although flipping Wendle to Miami reduces that a bit

Do you think the Atlanta stays in house and uses the young guys for the outfield??? Or do you think they will trade for someone???
