Espino's too good for that. Maybe they break him into the majors late in the year as a reliever if they're contending (similarly to what the Astros did with Hunter Brown last fall) but they're going to give him a rotation opportunity at some point in 2024
Mr. Fister
6:30
Do you see the Cardinals making a trade before the season, or does Nolan Gorman start the season blocked/in the minors?
Anthony Franco
6:30
Consolidation trade looks like more of a midseason thing. There just aren't many teams making impact players available right now
John
6:31
As a white Sox fan, I’m incredibly disappointed with this past off season.  Does this team have any hope?
Anthony Franco
6:32
The core of this roster is probably the best in the division. Cease, Giolito, Anderson, Robert, Jiménez, etc. is a high-end starting point. The roster's just thin, placing a lot of emphasis on bounceback seasons from Grandal and Moncada and the top players staying healthy
6:34
They're not going to be horrible, but it feels a little like some of the Angels' rosters of recent years. If they get full seasons from most of their key players, then sure, they're as good or better than Minnesota and Cleveland. But they'll have to hit the higher end of variance from a health perspective because they have zero rotation depth and nothing at second base
Jeff ceicel
6:35
Should the Yankees worry about their pitching depth
Anthony Franco
6:36
Starting to look concerning, yeah. Having Clarke Schmidt take a few turns through the rotation wouldn't be all that concerning but any other injuries are putting a lot of pressure on guys with little to no MLB track record
Jim C
6:36
Is Seattle now a potential landing spot for Profar?
Anthony Franco
6:37
This is in response to Taylor Trammell undergoing surgery to repair a hamate fracture in his right hand, which just got announced
6:38
Don't see Profar as a great fit there though. Kelenic always seemed likelier to get the lion's share of left field playing time than Trammell to me, and they've still got Pollock as a capable platoon partner who could handle more regular reps if need be
Reds
6:39
most likely reds player to be dealt at the trade deadline
Anthony Franco
6:40
One of the relievers. Lucas Sims probably
6:41
Basically anyone with fewer than two years of control would go if they're having a decent first couple months. Buck Farmer, Wil Myers, Curt Casali, Luke Weaver could all move if they're warranting interest
NL Dude
6:41
Will Jimmy Nelson get a chance to start for the Dodgers or is he the swingman/injury-replacement?
Anthony Franco
6:41
Have to imagine he's strictly a one-inning guy at this point. Just too many injuries to go back to starting
Padres Mark
6:42
Does Manny Machado resign with us or test free agency
Anthony Franco
6:42
Enough optimism out of Padres' camp on this, when paired with the organization's recent track record of keeping key players, that I lean towards extension
Chet Lemons
6:43
Are the Cubs a 3B and SP1 away from being a contender, or is the plan to wait on PCA and Brennan Davis arriving before going after a #1 starter (like the Lester signing) to Start contending?
Anthony Franco
6:44
They're not getting a third baseman and a #1 starter this offseason and guys like Crow-Armstrong and Kevin Alcantara could be real factors for the MLB roster at some point in 2024. So I'm not sure there's a difference between the two things you're proposing
6:46
Feels like a team that's a little shy of Wild Card level for this year but will be in position to get to that level by 2024 if the center field prospects and/or some of the young upper level pitching continue progressing
B Snit’s Bongos
6:46
Which player with a new club in 2023 will accrue the most WAR?
Anthony Franco
6:47
Haven't thought about this in-depth but it feels like Trea Turner's the pick
Tigers
6:48
Do you see Torkelson rebounding this year, or will he be another failed Avila legacy.
Anthony Franco
6:49
I remain in on a Tork bounceback. The power's still there, he didn't get blown away on pitches inside the strike zone last year. It was a slower start than expected but he still seems like an above-average offensive player

A lot of talk about a hard salary floor, but that then punished teams that are able to be smart and win with young players. So what about this idea: A salary floor set at an averaged percentage of all teams payrolls over ‘x’ amount of years, but teams are allowed to dip under it if they can show a winning record in at least 1 of every 3 previous years? That way teams can find a competitive edge while others are made to actually pay for a decent product.
Anthony Franco
6:51
I've never seen the need for a salary floor in general
Non-Rosters ??
6:52
Giants have 37 Non-Roster and 40 Roster Players in Camp.   How much exposure time can a Non-Roster player realistically plan to receive?
Anthony Franco
6:52
There'll be more reps available this year with a bunch of roster players leaving for the World Baseball Classic
6:53
A lot of the internal NRI's get late-inning reps early in camp so the big leaguers can start by playing like three to four innings for their first couple weeks. As the higher-level players start getting built up, the younger NRI's gradually get reassigned to minor league camp
Bernie
6:55
What kind of a contract could the Tigers offer Will Smith?
Anthony Franco
6:55
Probably ends up around Chafin money. One year in the $6MM range with a 2024 club option
MLBTR Fan
6:56
I see you guys are bringing back the MLBTR podcast. Will you be on any? What will they be covering?
Anthony Franco
6:58
Simon's going to host but Steve, Darragh and I will all rotate on there fairly frequently. Topics are going to vary based on the time of year obviously but generally the plan is to touch on major news as it comes up while giving us a different platform to discuss the state of playoff races, what we envision teams doing around the deadline, etc.
6:59
And it's another area for us to interact with readers/listeners. We haven't settled on the specific format yet but the plan is to have some means of taking reader questions as a mailbag type thing (either a handful of questions each episode or longer-form episodes dedicated specifically to taking reader questions)
Seattle
7:00
Why are you down on seattle this year, the roster is stronger this year and alot healthier
Anthony Franco
7:02
Wouldn't say I'm down on Seattle despite my response about them being the AL team I think is likeliest to drop out of the playoffs. The division's just going to be tougher than it has been. It's tough for me to see the Yankees or Jays missing out given the star talent and the Rays feel a little bit deeper and should win more than 86 games with better health
Brent
7:05
If Baltimore regresses in wins this season (which is probable), does Brandon Hyde get fired for a more experienced manager to guide the contention phase of the rebuild?
Anthony Franco
7:07
I'd be shocked. Front office has to be banking on regression from some of the starting pitchers who had solid results in 2022 (Voth, Kremer). They've talked about wanting to compete publicly but it's an uphill battle in that division, which they understand
7:08
Alright that's all I have time for tonight. Have to take over feed coverage from Darragh
