Live from New York, it's Chaturday Night!

I know I've used that intro before, but jokes are always funny when you repeat them a dozen times, right?  Onto the questions...
Baseball fan

do you think Jays buy or sell?
Mark P
8:44
This is something of a make or break year for the front office, so if they're even close to the race at the deadline, they'll be buying.  I think the Jays would have to be very clearly out of the running for the club to be clear-cut sellers
O’s
8:45
Finally made the move. Any hope or is this doomed to be a lost season?
Mark P
8:47
It helps the Orioles that there's a fair amount of parity in the AL, with only a few teams kind of pulling ahead of the pack this early.  But, they've got themselves into a deep enough hole that it'll take quick a turn-around to reach the playoffs, even if a "good" season (in the sense of a winning record) is still possible

8:48
Are Rhys Hoskins and Freddy Peralta on different teams at the trade deadline? #brewers
Mark P
8:49
I have faith that Milwaukee can right the ship.  That makes Peralta unlikely to be dealt since he's so affordable for 2026.
8:50
Hoskins is hitting well, though he got off to a nice start year too before things went south on him.  So it's wait and see on that front, but if he keeps producing, the Brewers might decide it's worth it to just keep a good bat in the lineup than it is to unload what would still only be a portion of his salary in what's left of the season
Rockies
8:51
How bad can this still get?
Mark P
8:51
Losing "only" 100 games would be a positive at this point
Sad Reds Fan
8:52
How do we lose two at home to the white Sox and look in the mirror and say “we are contenders”
Mark P
8:52
While those losses sting, it's baseball.  Great teams lose to bad teams all the time.
Dan S.
8:54
What kind of return could Cedric Mullins bring the Orioles at the deadline? Can he net someone on the backend of the Top 100 plus one or two complementary pieces, or is that too optimistic for a rental?
Rich
8:54
How long before the O's start selling? Mets could really use someone like Mullins in CF.
Mark P
8:55
Mullins' defensive numbers vary depending on your metric of choice, so teams may differ on Mullins' overall trade value based on their own internal metrics.  I don't think he'll bring back a major prospect piece if traded, but as a decent lefty bat who can passably play CF (and could thrive in a corner spot), he'd certainly draw attention.
Red Sox
8:56
How do you fix this team? It feels easy to say "Call up one of Mayer or Anthony" or "Get the rotation healthier", but it feels less like one specific part of the team is failing and more like the team as a whole is just not that good, even though on paper they should be
Mark P
8:58
Boston is 4-12 in one-run games, so getting even near to .500 in such close contests makes that record suddenly look way better.

I hesitate to just chalk their performance up to bad luck since there are some clear weak links on the roster, but all things being equal, the Red Sox should be on track to improve just in their current form
Bree

Does Rich Hill ever come back and pitch
Mark P
8:59
He just signed with KC the other day, so the path is there!  Hill also hasn't pitched with the Royals before, so that's a new club for his enormous resume
Vincent
8:59
Were you surprised that Hyde got canned?
Mark P
9:00
The Orioles were cratering badly enough that something had to be done, though obviously Hyde wasn't the lead reason (or even one of the top five reasons) the team is struggling
Jim
9:01
When does MLB get worried about John Fisher? No investors for the Vegas ballpark after trying for months.
Mark P
9:01
Terry Benedict was going to invest, but then 11 people or so robbed his casinos!
Devers
9:02
Any truth on Devers to Cubs for Ian Happ and prospects?  Should the Cubs be interested?
Mark P
9:03
I'm not sure if Happ would be the return for a Sox team that already has an overloaded outfield.  And, the Cubs have shown a hesitation about spending at the upper levels, so taking on the remainder of Devers' contract is a question mark.

On paper, however, Devers to Chicago would certainly be intriguing

I’m a baseball fan in a city with two teams. I like both teams. How about a poll asking those that live in the big markets if this is blasphemy or it’s more common than one would think.
Mark P

If you live in a city with two teams, is it cool to be fans of both?

Sure (36.3% | 161 votes)

NEVER (63.7% | 282 votes)

Devers
9:05
Zero % chance devers moves in season if ever and it would take 2 or 3 top 100 prospects , right?
Mark P
9:05
Oh, I highly doubt Devers would actually be traded.  But it's fun to speculate about blockbusters!

If the Cards are in it meaning within 3-5 games of the division lead do you feel that Bloom would maybe overrule Mo and actually add a piece or two to make a push to win this year or will they still let Mo trade away pieces and destroy team morale?
Mark P
9:08
There seems to be a message or two in every chat that implies there's some kind of weird power struggle going on behind the scenes in St. Louis, or that the front office isn't on the same page.  While this succession plan is a little unusual, if anything, such a plan probably means all parties have a clear idea in mind about how to approach the final year of the Mozeliak era.

And, to your larger point, the Cards are going to try to win if they're in contention.  Getting back to the playoffs would do a lot to restore fan morale.  While I don't think they'd go on a buying spree at the deadline or something, the Cardinals will make a pickup or two

Would the Nats even consider offers on Mackenzie Gore? He’s got 2 years of control after this and his stock is hugely high, I feel like he might be the final big blockbuster to bring in pieces before the rebuild ends.
Mark P
9:11
The Nationals surely plan to be competitive within those two years.  Plus, Gore is a particular bargain, since his first-year arb salary is only $2.89MM.  Even if you pencil in something like a $4MM bump in each of the next two years, a frontline-ish starter for a little over $17MM is still a huge deal.

what extension would the phillies have to offer Schwarber right now to re-sign him?
contract prediction for Schwarber?
Mark P
9:14
Apart from the unlikelihood of Schwarber signing a new deal mid-year when he's so close to free agency.....four years, $100MM?

2026 will be his age-33 season and he's a DH-only player.  The bat is still elite, however, and an offer like that would get Schwarber to consider signing right now, just in case he has any doubts about landing a fourth guaranteed year
Hayden Birdsong
9:16
Am I ready to be a full time starter?
Mark P
9:17
The Giants sure think so, even if their hand may have been forced by Hicks' struggles.  But now it feels like Hicks will just stick in the pen for good, and the team can say they gave him a fair shot at becoming a starter.

Will the Braves trade Marcell Ozuna?
Mark P
9:19
Probably not. A move would free up the DH spot, but it would also make for a risky investment in Baldwin.  Ozuna is a proven Major League slugger, whereas Baldwin is hitting well now, but that might change once pitching coaches get a book on him.
