Walks are still the best proxy we have for control but in-zone command's a little tougher

Does Lux accrue service time while he's on the IL this season?
Anthony Franco
6:37
Yes
John

Heston Kjerstad. Let the hot spring start talk begin! He’s looking like the 2nd overall pick he was. How early can we see him in Baltimore?
Anthony Franco
6:38
Feels like mid-'24 at the earliest. He only has 63 professional games, none of which have come above High-A. There's a lot of development left. Biggest thing is just getting an opportunity to play a full professional schedule for the first time
6:40
I still like Kjerstad a lot. Thought he would've been a perfectly defensible #2 pick even aside from the under-slot bonus, but he's obviously quite a bit behind after losing a year and a half because of myocarditis

What do you think Aaron Nola’s contract extension will look like?
Anthony Franco
6:42
Guessing he'd end up around $200MM if he signs eight months before free agency

Assuming all of the Red Sox starters make it to Opening Day healthy (big ask) - what’s their rotation look like? Who gets kicked to the bullpen?
Anthony Franco
6:43
Houck back to the bullpen. Maybe they roll with six starters early to keep Bello in the rotation while managing innings for Sale, Paxton and Whitlock
With Kluber and Pivetta taking the other two spots
Harry Caray
6:44
Hayden Wesneski looked solid at the end of 22 and has looked real good so far this spring. Shouldn’t he be the front runner for the 5th spot in the Cubs rotation? Sampson has pitched out of the pen and is accustomed to that role and Assad isn’t as good as either of the other candidates.
Anthony Franco
6:45
Yeah I'd have Wesneski above those other two. Feels like a pretty stable fourth starter type to me, nice pull in a trade for a breakout rookie reliever

Do you think it will become more common for teams to give out FA contracts in future offseasons to players through their age 40 seasons or did that happen this year because the demand to sign a star player was greater?
Anthony Franco
6:47
Seems like we're trending back in that direction, largely because of the luxury tax implications. Lower annual salaries over a longer term counts for less against a team's CBT ledger up front
6:48
I do think it was a little more prevalent this winter than it will be in future seasons, largely because the Dodgers sat out the top of the market this year. They've taken the opposite approach -- higher per-year salaries to minimize risk over the longer haul -- and will probably do so again in future offseasons
But I think other clubs are more willing to go into a player's late-30s or 40s than they'd been for CBT purposes

With Hentges out, Will Smith to the Guardians?
Anthony Franco

Makes a lot of sense, sure

Sorry, Sad Rockies Fan. Not sure if that makes you feel better
6:51
Prime Carlos González was really fun
Thanks Tony

Who is your pick for biggest name moved at this deadline? Bonus points for best guess destination
Anthony Franco
6:52
I'll go Lucas Giolito. St. Louis

Regarding Lux, wouldn't he not accrue service time due to not occupying the Active Roster prior to IL placement (there currently is no Active Roster)? Similar to when a player gets an injury while on an option assignment; they don't gain service time.
Anthony Franco
6:53
That's a different situation. Players on the minor league injured list don't accrue service time. Lux will have to go on the MLB IL, even though the injury occurred in Spring Training, and he'll get service
Roger Dorn’s arm bruise
6:55
This year’s HR leader will be?
Anthony Franco
6:58
Hard to take anyone other than Judge after he just led the league by 16. Guess if you want a more "original" pick, Austin Riley has a shot if he makes a little more consistent contact

When should the Nats get a good free agent (ala Werth) to win some games?  Seems like they are losing revenue/ticket sales by quitting before the season starts with such a weak roster.  Dc is a big market to quit on for 3 years in arow.
Anthony Franco
6:59
Feels like the ownership situation has to get resolved before they do anything like that again. They're still probably two years away from a roster perspective

Schoop has been at 3rd base this spring is that a possible spot for him and cesar hernandez or someone other at 2nd base for the tigers
Anthony Franco
7:00
Definitely has the arm for it, but the only reason he was even playable last year were the outstanding defensive metrics at second base
7:01
I'd rather give Maton or Kreidler a look at third

7:02
How do you see the top 3 in the NL East finishing? And will all 3 make the playoffs again?
Anthony Franco
7:03
Boring answer but I think I like them in the same order as last season. Atlanta, Mets, Philly
7:04
Yeah, I'd probably pick them all to make the playoffs again. Darragh and I were just talking about this yesterday; the best six teams in the NL last year seem pretty firmly the top six again to both of us
7:05
Stuff happens and I have to imagine there'll be some turnover considering how rare it is to see an entire playoff field repeat, but I don't see any team I'd feel super strongly about falling out or jumping in

It's O'Hoppe season now - what can the Angels net for Max Stassi? Another starter would be nice.
Anthony Franco
7:07
He's got negative trade value right now. Stassi wouldn't have gotten two years and $14.5MM (the remaining money on his extension) if he were a free agent this offseason coming off the year he just had
