News just to hand, Pirates are sending RHP Ricky DeVito to Texas to complete this deal. Will update our post shortly
Angels for life
10:39
Then why not trade Ohtani before the deadline?
Simon Hampton
10:39
Because they want to compete this year! If the Angels are out of it, I think there'll be a lot of noise about an Ohtani trade at the deadline

What keeps a player like Tatis from being in the lineup in ST? Is he trying to gradually test his wrist and shoulder?
Simon Hampton
10:41
I think I've read that a lot of hitters feel ST games go on far too long, and it's mostly for pitchers to get themselves suitably stretched out. So I guess for a hitter that
's had a lot of injuries it makes some sense that he wouldn't rush back into games

Thoughts on Cleveland’s offseason? Did they do enough to possibly win the World Series?
Simon Hampton
10:43
I think Cleveland did what they have done a very good job of doing over the past few years, and that is doing enough to put themselves in a position where they're not the hot favorites for a title, but you know they'll be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. Same again in 2023

Man I can't wait for Phillies baseball again  am I over hyped to think this team is really special and might run away with a loaded NLE this season?
Simon Hampton
10:43
I'd be really surprised if they ran away with it given the quality in that division, but I think you have every reason to feel excited about Philadelphia's chances this year

how much pressure does the montas and rodon injuries put on luis severino, who is never healthy
Simon Hampton
10:44
I think the Yankees have to address their rotation depth between now and Opening Day. Severino is injury-prone as you say, and let's not forget Nestor Cortes had a hamstring problem recently and pitched way more innings than he ever had previously last year
Ross Atkins
10:45
How much will it cost me to extend Chapman before he gets to free agency at the end of the year?  And should I?
Simon Hampton
10:47
A bit more now that Machado has re-signed and Chapman is the top 3B in next year's market? I think Chapman's a really valuable player, but the Blue Jays should be more focused on setting themselves up to find a way to keep Guerrero, Bichette and Manoah

Do Dodgers trade for SS?
Simon Hampton
10:48
Maybe, but think they'll go with Rojas for now

Why haven’t the Angels traded Adell yet? It should have happened along time ago. Could we get a bullpen piece in return?
Simon Hampton
10:50
I doubt he's got much value at all anymore, and he's still got a minor league option remaining, so unless the Angels have a major 40-man roster crunch I don't there's much motivation to trade him at this point. May as well keep him and see if he figures it out. Different story next winter though.
A real issue
10:53
So from here on out, with the haves and gave notes, will any smaller market team EVER legitimately have a chance at a world series? I'm so frustrated that smaller market teams, except Padres for now, won't be really competitive.  Even as a larger market fan, it is discouraging the difference in teams that will have a real chance to compete for a world series ever again.
Simon Hampton
10:56
Sure. There'll always be rich and poor teams, but baseball's contracting structure so overwhelmingly favors teams getting value from young players (that are earning league min/arbitration) v players signed as free agents that there's always pathways for small market teams to get competitive - the Rays and Guardians being good examples.

Of course, richer teams are able to combine strong development with big signings (Astros, Dodgers) to great effect.

I'm not saying I'm in agreement with the lack of spending from some small market teams, but I still think the best path to a quality team is through strong player development/drafting over pure $$$ in free agency

What is the better division?  AL East or NL East
Simon Hampton
10:57
NL East for me. AL East has a higher floor, but the NL East has three World Series contenders

Kelenic has been on an absolute tear this spring.  You think he’s unlocked something or is this just a AAAA player feasting on sub-par talent in a small sample size?
Simon Hampton
10:59
I'd love to see Kelenic find his groove, but I won't be making that call off a handful of spring games. In fact it doesn't even factor into an assessment of him. Hope he has a big year though

caould the AL west produce 3 playoff teams?
Simon Hampton
11:00
Yep, but the AL Central (Guardians, Twins, White Sox) and East (Yankees, Blue Jays, Rays) all have teams that could will be in the mix so it's by no means a certainty
Anthony Volpe
11:01
Any chance at all I make the opening day roster?
Simon Hampton
11:03
There's a chance, sure. A combination of Volpe's lack of experience (22 games at AAA) and New York's glut of infielders make it unlikely I think. I'd love to see him force their hand though, and don't think it'll be long before he's up anyway

11:05
Will the Jays Achilles heal continue to be the lack of swing and miss in their bullpen (aside from Romano)?
Simon Hampton
11:07
I don't think that's what will be the difference maker for them, no. Swanson had a better K rate than Romano last year as well. Tons of potential in this Blue Jays team for mine, and with the Yankees' injuries I have those two about neck-and-neck as AL East favorites.

Jays can easily bolster the pen down the line but for now they're looking pretty good, particularly if Berrios and Kikuchi can bounce back
Pedro
11:09
Explain the Bears trade in baseball terms?
Simon Hampton
11:10
Hmm, bit of fun. Pirates trade the first overall pick to the Rockies for the ninth overall pick, Colorado's second round pick, first rounder in '24 and second rounder in '25... and Ryan McMahon?!
Zach
11:11
I think it’s reasonable to expect Berrios to bounce back but what evidence is there that Kikuchi can? Other than one great half he has been mediocre to bad for his career.
Simon Hampton
11:11
I agree with you Zach but even if Kikuchi can be a little bit serviceable at the backend they're in good shape, and can always find a more reliable fifth starter down the road
Profar
11:14
Does he sign before opening day? Or will he have to wait until a team loses a key piece to injury?
Simon Hampton
11:15
I think he'll sign by Opening Day. A few injuries going around (Mitch Haniger the latest with a Grade 1 oblique strain), and I think we'll see a few moves closer to the end of the spring once it becomes clearer who will and won't be ready for Opening Day.

Hitters like Profar surely don't need a full slate of spring games to get up to speed as well, a couple of weeks would be fine I think
(he says, having never prepared to hit for a Major League team...)

Yesterday Anthony said he liked only mustard on his hot dogs (same as I do!).  What about you?  Do you even like hot dogs because that should be a job in baseball requirement.  Thanks!
Simon Hampton
11:16
Mustard and tomato sauce for sure

Moore is certainly better than McMahon!
