Hey everyone, hope you're all doing well!
3:47
We'll get going here in a minute or two as questions start to trickle in
Royals Fan
3:47
Any thought on the Santana trade?
Anthony Franco
3:48
It's fine for both sides, assuming the Royals ate basically all of the money. Didn't expect K.C. to be able to recoup anything of value for Santana, so to get a middle reliever and a vaguely interesting pitching prospect works
3:49
Seattle needed a stopgap after losing France and can cut bait pretty quickly if Santana cools off
Josh
3:49
What trades do you see the Twins making at the deadline?
Anthony Franco
3:49
They'll be in on virtually every starting pitcher, and I'd probably pick them them to land one of Castillo, Montas or Mahle
3:50
Could look to add another corner bat too after losing Larnach for six weeks, although I wouldn't consider it a must with Miranda, Arraez and Kirilloff all around
Artie moreno
3:50
Why can’t we trade for an impact player or players. We are just picking up guys
Daniel
3:50
Anthony, how do you see the Angels approaching the trade deadline?
Anthony Franco
3:51
Trading for impact players is tough, and it's not like the Angels' problem over the past few years has been a lack of star power. It's the inability to surround the core with enough depth that's been the problem
3:52
As far as this summer goes, it really depends on how they play over the next five weeks. I'm sure they'd love to hang around the Wild Card mix and be in position to look for another high-leverage arm and some infield help
3:53
But that's only going to happen if they're within a realistic shot of a Wild Card berth, and if they're like six games out with three teams to jump by the end of July, probably time to pivot and flip Syndergaard and Lorenzen
Worndown
3:53
Contreras/Hendricks in a package deal to NYM or SF?
Anthony Franco
3:54
Don't think there's much chance of those guys going together. Hendricks doesn't hold a ton of appeal
Still waiting in San Diego
3:54
I keep hearing that the Padres are interested in moving Blake Snell.  If this is true, which teams might be interested in him (with his inconsistent command and minor injury history)?  I'm assuming the return wouldn't be much (other than salary relief).
Anthony Franco
3:55
Yeah I agree there's modest surplus value there but the bigger feature of any return for SD would be salary relief than prospect talent
3:56
Twins, Dodgers, Blue Jays make some sense. Maybe the Rangers get involved there mostly as a way to buy low on an option for the 2023 rotation?
Sad phillies fan
3:56
Whose the biggest addition we could seriously make at the deadline?
Anthony Franco
3:58
Center field and bullpen help still feel like the big needs there, as they've been for a while. Cedric Mullins and one of Baltimore's decent relievers maybe?
Don't think Mullins is likely to go but it's not implausible

3:58
How many teams currently leading their divisions will be in first at the end of the season
Anthony Franco
3:59
I'll say five, Milwaukee being the most likely to not hold on
Joe
3:59
What's the window of contention for Oakland at this point?  Are we looking at a hard 3-4 years, or can they pull of something quicker than that?
Anthony Franco
4:00
I don't think it'll be that long. They targeted upper minors or quick-moving types in the Olson/Chapman/Manaea deals, and that regime has a strong track record from a pro scouting perspective
4:01
It's not really a rebuild so much as they were desperate to shed a bunch of money. Next year's probably too much to ask, but I could see a world where they're decent by 2024 again
Jayjay
4:01
With Kirk, Jansen , and Moreno all doing well, ultimately who stays and who goes?
Anthony Franco
4:01
They'll keep them all for this season and probably flip Jansen next offseason. Pretty nice problem to have
MoKo
4:02
Hello there! If/when Michael Busch gets promoted, who’s the better 2nd baseman between him and Lux? And how feasible is a Lux Busch middle infield?
Anthony Franco
4:03
More faith in Lux defensively than Busch, can't see them going with that duo everyday to let Trea Turner walk or anything like that
It'd be pretty rough defensively and there's risk with any prospect they don't acclimate to the majors immediately at the plate
Jrmomo10
4:03
What do you see the Cardinals doing in the trade break
Anthony Franco
4:04
Relief help feels like the big thing there. Flaherty's injury probably means they'll poke around the market for a back-end starter too but I doubt they'll be motivated to part with the kind of talent it'd take for a Montas type
Train
4:05
I think the Brewers have enough to make Postseason, but What/Who do they add to improve this team at deadline?? An extra bat and/or an extra reliever?
Anthony Franco
4:06
They need offense, preferably in the outfield. I'd give serious thought to trading for Benintendi and just throwing him in center field for a couple months
4:07
He wouldn't be great there in all likelihood, but he'd be a notable offensive upgrade over Tyrone Taylor and Jonathan Davis and the defensive concerns are less pronounced for the pitching staff with the league's second-best strikeout rate
Fred
4:07
Why batting is so poorly this season?
Anthony Franco
4:08
Everyone has struck out a ton for a while, which made offense very home run dependent. Now the ball isn't carrying as much this year. It's a bad combo
Natso Rizzo
4:08
in yesterday’s chat, Steve Adams suggested Tanner Rainey as an available bullpen arm. He’s controlled through 2024. Would anyone really offer enough for Rainey to make the Nats
Anthony Franco
4:10
They'll listen to offers, since a reliever with strike-throwing concerns like Rainey isn't going to be a core piece of the next contender. But I don't know there'll be a strong enough offer to make them pull the trigger
