Anthony Franco
4:31
Hey everybody, looking forward to what I believe will be my last chat before the deadline
4:32
Going to hold tight to an hour today since there's plenty of work, but I'll try to move quicker than usual through the questions. Let's get rolling
Preller
4:32
What would it take for me to get both Happ and Contreras?
Anthony Franco
4:32
(Padres)
Ownership willingness to exceed the luxury tax threshold first and foremost. I think Hassell's a solid starting point in a prospect package for that duo if the money's there
Tom
4:33
Joey Gallo for Didi Gregorius, swapping two bad contracts in need of a change of scenery. Who says no?
Anthony Franco
4:33
Gregorius is more expensive and playing worse. Don't see why the Yankees would bother
4:34
Phillies also don't need a corner outfielder so maybe them too, but perhaps they'd be willing to play Gallo in center
Kim Ng
4:34
Could you see a Pablo Lopez, Volpe type trade happening?
Anthony Franco
4:34
I think it's a reasonable ask on Miami's part but I expect the Yankees would balk at it
Chris
4:34
Why is skubal available? They aren't trying to dump Baez are they?
Anthony Franco
4:35
Mostly due diligence, probably. They're not going to force anything for a meager return but there's no harm in listening to offers
4:36
He's a pitcher. Those guys get hurt a lot. Before this season he'd been up-and-down, and he's scuffled lately. I can see why they might think it's a high point of his trade value
As for Baez, they can try to move him all they want but it's not happening
Tim Sherman
4:36
When will the first domino fall? And who will it be?
Anthony Franco
4:37
I think it'll happen in the next day or two. Seems like Josh Bell's going to move relatively early
Ryan
4:37
On the grand scale, do you think this will be a more or less active deadline than average?
Anthony Franco
4:38
Less in terms of volume given the sparsity of good rentals on bad teams, but a Soto trade -- if it happens -- would be at least comparable to last year's Scherzer/Turner blockbuster in terms of impact
Guest
4:38
What's the latest on Soto? Cardinals still the clear front runners?
Anthony Franco
4:39
They're a viable suitor but I don't think the Cardinals or anyone else has ever been a clear frontrunner. Still a very good chance he doesn't get traded until this winter anyways
Patrick
4:39
Have you heard anything about the guardians and a catcher? Was reported on MLB network theywere the front runners for Contreras. Thanks
Anthony Franco
4:40
Haven't seen anything firm on that. Contreras doesn't really feel like their kind of move. Somewhat expensive rental, more of a bat-first guy
I think they're a better fit for Sean Murphy. They seem to prioritize defense. He's affordable for a while and they have a glut of upper minors infielders that would be really appealing to Oakland
OhioBravesFan
4:40
Think that the Braves try to extend Swanson?
Anthony Franco
4:41
I doubt it happens before the season ends but I figure they'll stay in the mix when he hits free agency. I do like them as a fit on one of the better free agent shortstops if Dansby walks
Jay
4:41
who do you think the brewers are gonna get?
Anthony Franco
4:42
I've been on Benintendi as a fit there for basically all of deadline season, and I'll stick with it
O's fan
4:42
who are some pitchers with control beyond 2023 that might be up for trade?
Anthony Franco
4:43
Skubal, López and Urquidy are all apparently at least vaguely available. It'd be a bold move for the Orioles that I don't expect them to take, but there's a case for it
4:44
Rangers feel like the 2022 non-contender that'd be most likely to make this kind of splash for next season any beyond
Braves
4:44
What’s the Braves greatest need right now? Outfielder, starting pitcher, maybe a bullpen arm?
Anthony Franco
4:44
Corner outfielder has been a need for a while, and Duvall's injury only exacerbates it
Tommy
4:44
Does Bogaerts get moved before the deadline in your opinion? If so, where’s the likeliest landing spot? And what could you get for him on an expiring deal?
Anthony Franco
4:45
Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom was pretty clear yesterday that a Bogaerts trade hasn't been under any consideration there
Now if they lose four or five in a row maybe that changes right before the deadline, but I think it's far likelier he sticks around for the rest of the year and then opts out
4:46
They're close enough to the playoff race they don't have to blow it up, and on Bogaerts, they'd get a compensatory pick if he walks in free agency after rejecting the QO
Twins
4:46
If you had to guess, who is the most likely player to end up in a twins uniform by next week?
Anthony Franco
4:47
Pedro Severino as the boring answer, but I guess Mahle among the bigger targets?
Going to get a starter, probably two relievers and a backup catcher. They'll be active
Snyders Sissies
4:48
Corbin Burnes or Carlos Rodon rest of season?
