MLBTR Chat With Jason Martinez: December 6, 2017
powered byJotCast
Jason Martinez
4:32
Welcome. Let's chat about everything that might happen in the next week. A lot will happen. I hope.
Alex Cora
4:32
Owens on waivers a sign of move in the works?
Jason Martinez
4:35
Not necessarily. With a full 40-man, they were going to have to open a spot(s) soon anyways. I don't think he's making it thru waivers, although the Red Sox might've felt they could sneak him through right as things are starting to pick up.
Giancarlo

What would a mock trade for me be like going to Stl?
Jason Martinez
4:37
1. Sounds like Alcantara would be the main piece. 2. One of the OF prospects has to be in the deal (Magneuris Sierra or Harrison Bader). 3. Someone like Grichuk would be likely. 4. Maybe one other pitching prospect.
Ace
4:37
Do you think 4-58 is a reasonable expectation for Santana?
Jason Martinez
4:37
Sounds about right to me.
Zach Hartman
4:39
Who's the one name we aren't hearing now that might be a huge target in July?
Jason Martinez
4:39
I have my fingers crossed that the Nationals are completely awful in April, May and June and Bryce Harper is on the trade block in July. Very doubtful, though.
4:41
Machado is likely to be the biggest name on the trade block. O's are going to try to build a contender this offseason, but I don't like their chances.
Frank
4:41
Who’s proposed from SF in the Stanton deal?
Jason Martinez
4:43
Some of the names I've read are Heliot Ramos (top prospect; 1st Rd pick in '17), INF Christian Arroyo, 1B/OF Chris Shaw, SP Tyler Beede and C Aramis Garcia. Maybe 3 of those guys and another lesser prospect.
Henrique
4:43
Hosmer to SD really happening?
Jason Martinez
4:46
I'd say it's still unlikely, but I think they'll at least make a competitive offer just in case he's not getting the interest that is expected. If he's on board for 6-7 years, it makes sense. They have almost no $ on the books and window of contention should be pretty strong between 2020 thru end of Hosmer's deal.
Mr Myoggi
4:46
Where does Ohtani end up?
Jason Martinez
4:46
No comment. I do not want to jinx my favorite team.
Cardinals
4:47
If we miss out on Stanton, do you think that we'd be able to pry Jose Abreu away from the White Sox?
Jason Martinez
4:48
Sure. My feeling is that they're adding an impact middle-of-the-order hitter one way or another. Most likely via trade.
Carson Kelly
4:49
Could I be the center piece for Abreu or Archer? Have I been mentioned in any talks to date?
Jason Martinez
4:51
Probably not a centerpiece for an impact hitter/frontline SP. But solid 2nd or 3rd piece. I think the Rays are open to trading Archer, but it would be costly. Maybe similar to or close to what White Sox got for 3 years of Sale.
Maddon's glasses
4:52
Schwarber to Yankees? What will the Cubs get?
Jason Martinez
4:53
If that happens, I think it would be centered around top prospects. Cubs need bullpen help but none of the Yankees' relievers are enough for Schwarber alone. I can see Betances or maybe even Chad Green + top prospect(s) for Schwarber.
Bobby Evans
4:54
What should I do after the Dodgers steal Stanton at the last minute and Ohtani chooses Seattle?
Jason Martinez
4:54
Sign Lorenzo Cain or trade for Andrew McCutchen.
Jim Thome
4:55
Should I be in the HOF?
Jason Martinez
4:55
Yep. One of the best hitters in baseball for a decade.
Doug
4:57
Do the two former Brave prospects help the Halos farm system move up a few notches?
Jason Martinez
4:59
For two guys who probably won't even reach a full-season level in '18, I don't know if they'd jump too many other teams. But the overall depth is slowly improving. A good draft in '18 and they could easily be in the middle of the pack by next offseason.

4:59
Do you feel that the Mike Minor was a bit of a stretch? He hasn't started since like 2014.
Jason Martinez
5:02
Not really. Could be a solid mid-rotation starter at a cheap price or a valuable multi-inning setup man. Even if it's the latter, that's not a bad deal. Just needs to stay healthy. But that's the case any time a team gives a lot of $ to a pitcher.

5:04
Which big free agents do the DBacks sign this offseason
Jason Martinez
5:06
Even after acquiring Boxberger, I think their biggest signing will be a late-inning reliever. Maybe Jake McGee. Maybe bring Addison Reed back.
Ghost of Kevin Malone

Any idea what a good return for Grandal would be?  What teams do you think are in need of his services?
Jason Martinez
5:08
Orioles make a lot of sense. Rockies and Dbacks could use him more than any other team, but price will be very high for an inter-division trade. I actually think the Dodgers are happy with 2 good catchers with Barnes/Grandal splitting playing time 60/40.
Bo
5:08
Would Julio Teheran and 1 of the Braves top pitching prospects be enough for Ian Happ?
Jason Martinez
5:11
Probably. The Braves have 2-3 of the best pitching prospects in baseball and all are close to MLB ready. Those guys have a lot of value. That trade might even have to be balanced out some because Teheran also has a lot of value. With that said, not sure Happ is a perfect fit. Braves are trying to open a spot in their OF for Acuña and they have Albies at 2B.
Jackson
5:11
Who do you think has the best chance to get Colome?
Jason Martinez
5:12
Rockies and Cardinals have the prospect talent/depth to get a deal done. Cubs are also a possibility.
Stevil
5:13
Jerry Dipoto noted after acquiring Ryon Healy from Oakland that going with a pre-arb player at 1B would clear up money for a greater area of need. We know Dipoto's trying to hammer out a deal with Jon Jay, but he wouldn't be that expensive. Wouldn't it make sense that he would be in on Yu Darvish? The greatest area of need for the Mariners is clearly starting pitching, and a deal with Darvish could potentially be back-loaded a couple of years until Felix is off the books. With or without Ohtani, they'd have a much more enticing rotation, and they could probably pick up someone like Adams cheap to serve as insurance or a platoon partner for Healy. What do you think?
Jason Martinez
5:15
Yep. I think they're holding off on Jon Jay so they can focus on adding a frontline starting pitcher. If they can sign Darvish or Arrieta, they'd opt for a cheaper option in CF (Jay). If they don't land Darvish or Arrieta, I think they'd set their sights higher in CF (Lorenzo Cain).
