I see the Dodgers signing Bryce Harper . Not to far from Vegas and Bryce /Hollywood go together? Right ?
Mark P
10:24
Sorry, I couldn't see that question
(rimshot)

The Dodgers only seem interested in Harper in a shorter-term/higher average annual value type of contract.  If Harper becomes willing to accept such a deal, I have no doubt LAD will be high on his list.

With the concept of the opener seeming to be considered in multiple places, do you see an end to the mandatory 5 inning win requirement for a starter?
Mark P
10:26
Purely due to tradition, I would guess it would be quite some time before MLB considers changing the rules regarding the win.

Best offseason so far?
Mark P
10:28
In terms of plugging holes, the Yankees and Nationals.  New York is going to be scary next year, and the Nats did a solid job of addressing needs even while losing (maybe?) Harper

In terms of adding players that will give them the most improvement in 2019, the Mets and Phillies.  Both teams are legitimately in the conversation for a playoff berth, and in Philly's case, more could still come.

Looks like Boston and New York are going to good for awhile. What year should the Jays aim for?
Mark P
10:31
Assuming that Vlad Jr. is as advertised, 2021 should be the year they aim to contend (as Ross Atkins has projected), and if at least a couple of the other top prospects develop, they could fully go for it in 2022.

How many players do the tigers trade this season?
Mark P
10:33
I'd say at least two of this group.....Castellanos is the obvious name, plus Hardy, Greene, and Ross/Moore/Mercer of the short-term veteran guys.

Was it wise for the Phillies to move on from JP Crawford in favor of Jean Segura?
Mark P
10:35
The Phillies are clearly planning to win now, and decided they didn't have time to wait for Crawford to develop.  I loved that trade for Philly --- Pazos and Nicasio are underrated relievers, and it got the ill-advised Carlos Santana deal off the books to clear room for Hoskins at 1B

What do you think will be the likely solution to how "things get figured out in Tampa and Oakland"?
Mark P
10:37
My guess, purely based on my own speculation, is that the Rays move and the A's stay in Oakland.  If I had to pick one of the two to remain in their city, the A's seem to be making more progress towards a new ballpark

Do you see a scenario where the Indians trade Lindor?
Mark P
10:40
No, now that he's hurt.  :)

In all seriousness, I doubt Cleveland deals Lindor unless they go into full rebuild mode.  He's too good to move.

Where is Nolan arenado playing in 2020
Mark P
10:41
My guess is Colorado.  I predict Arenado and the Rockies will work out a big extension in the next six weeks.

How would Oakland's pitching staff compare to the rest of baseball if/when all their young pitching arms are healthy.
Mark P
10:43
That's the challenge facing the A's front office --- on paper, you could have a terrific staff already, but you have no way of knowing thanks to all those injuries.  It really is kind of amazing that Oakland made the postseason despite that patched-together rotation last year
Alec
10:43
Is the Phillies' pitching staff complete for Opening Day?
Mark P
10:44
My guess is no, they'l add one more hurler.  Maybe not a top name like Keuchel, necessarily, but another solid rotation piece

It feels like the Cubs are taking a giant step backwards by basically doing nothing this off-season. Do you agree it is too much of a risk to bet on improvement from so many players when the team is supposed to be in the middle of it's window?
Mark P
10:48
As Tim Dierkes and several others have mentioned, I don't know why Cubs ownership is so against the idea of surpassing the luxury tax for a season or two.  They'll have enough money coming off the books next winter (Hamels, Zobrist, Morrow, Cishek, Kintzler, etc.) that they won't hit the $40MM overage point.

That said, the Cubs also have enough talent that maybe they don't feel the need for a big shakeup, if simply everyone is healthy this year.  You could argue that keeping Hamels counts as their "big addition," though I agree that more could easily be done

10:49
Since I'm looking for another starting pitcher, why didn't I just hang onto Sonny Gray?
Mark P
10:50
Gray just didn't seem very effective in Yankee Stadium.  Judging by now forthright Cashman (the Yankees' GM, by the way) was in saying that Gray was a trade chip, it was clear that a change in scenery was necessary,
10:51
And with that, we'll call it a night after close to two hours!  (Went a bit long this week in honor of the first Sunday chat.)  See you all at 8pm CT next week!
