Hi gang, off to a late start for this week's Sunday chat due to the breaking news of the Bogaerts extension.  Let's get rolling!

Oh hi, Mark!

Big news breaking 20 minutes before a chat is tearing me apaaaaart, Lisa

Thoughts on the Bogaerts extension?  Anyone else getting one this season?
Mark P
9:48
A good deal for the Red Sox.  $20MM per year for a player's 27-32 seasons, plus maybe another $20MM for his age-33 season (at 525 PAs in 2025).  That's not a bad number at all for a guy who might yet have another level of production in him.
9:49
In terms of other extensions....I dunno, maybe anyone?  It definitely seems like players are very wary of being free agents these days.  Anyone coming up as a FA next winter could still be in play for extension talks
Kimbrel
9:50
Do I sign with the Rays?
Mark P
9:50
Somebody's got to sign him.  I can't rule out Tampa as a dark horse....in fact, I can't rule lots of contenders out at this point
AA
9:50
Welp, it’s pretty obvious I messed yp
Mark P
9:51
As everyone knows, a team's record in the first four games is 100% indicative of how the rest of the season will go.  That Padres/Mariners World Series is going to be a corker!
Jimbo
9:52
Thought's on Paddack's debut?
JM
9:52
How about the start of the padres rotation!
Mark P
9:53
Talk about a dream start, eh?  Certainly a lot of promise there, but obviously one can't jump to conclusions after a few days.
Mookie Betts
9:53
Do I leave the Red Sox?
Mark P
9:55
Betts has been pretty adamant about wanting to test free agency, so I'd be surprised to see Boston extend him.  As to whether or not he'll leave.....who knows.  He has said he likes playing in Boston, and obviously he must enjoy the constant winning.
Philly Phan
9:55
Why don't other sports extend players like baseball is right now?
Mark P
9:56
Every sport has their own version of "extension season," though other sports have differing rules about when players can be extended, and for how long
MelichYelich
9:57
Am I playing over my head or is this real?
Mark P
9:57
Well, I'm pretty sure he won't hit 162 homers this year, so he's "playing over his head" in that sense.  But Yelich is awesome, last season was enough evidence of that.

Thoughts on Dolans comments regarding Lindor?
Mark P
9:59
Dolan obviously doesn't want to say there's little chance of a Lindor extension, and I guess you can never say never.  But I'd be very surprised if Lindor doesn't hit free agency, or is traded before he reaches the open market

Could the Dbacks season be worse than expected?
Mark P
10:00
There's so much parity in the NL that the Diamondbacks could have the second-worst record in the league, yet still end up with something like 74 wins.
Mariner Fanatic
10:00
Buying into the hype of Mariners contending for a playoff spot?  Do you see them making any moves with a strong start?
Mark P
10:01
I always see Jerry Dipoto making moves, whether the team is winning or losing.  They'll definitely be deadline buyers if they're in contention, though maybe nothing truly huge if they're sticking with the "re-imagining" plan
Worm
10:02
What baseball book are you reading now? I need some recommendations
Mark P
10:02
Jane Leavy's recent book about Babe Ruth was an entertaining read
Seattle Mariner
10:02
Can we get a poll on if Mariners are pretenders or contenders?
Mark P
10:02
Are the Mariners...

Pretenders (78.7% | 398 votes)

Contenders (21.3% | 108 votes)

Total Votes: 506

If the Cubs blow this window (don’t make it back to WS in next few years) will Theo and team be a ‘good’ exec. crew rather than elite?
Mark P
10:04
Ending two of the longest championship droughts in sports history.....yeah, I'd go with elite.  An argument can definitely be made the Cubs' core is good enough to get more than "only" one World Series, but come on, Theo and company broke the Curse.

10:05
When do the trades start?
Mark P
10:05
My guess is not until closer to the deadline, though Farhan Zaidi is open to all ideas for an earlier move
Bill Sportsman
10:06
Was the Morales trade a good deal for both teams?
Mark P
10:08
For Toronto....yes.  You get a bit of salary relief, and you open up the DH spot for either Rowdy Tellez or a rotation of guys on rest days.

For Oakland...yes.  Morales at $2MM isn't bad at all, considering that the guy had some very solid numbers after mid-May, once he ditched his glasses.  The A's don't need star production from Morales, just a decent stopgap job until Olson returns

Do you think Castellanos will be influenced by all these extensions to sign one with the Tigers, or does Al Avila not want him
Mark P
10:10
As of a couple of weeks ago, the Tigers hadn't had any talks with Castellanos, so I suspect they're prepared to trade him or move on
Barney
10:10
If Eric Hosmer is hitting like an MVP can he be traded at the deadline?
Mark P
10:10
Uh, if he's hitting like an MVP, wouldn't the Padres want to keep him?
