MLBTR Chat With Mark Polishuk

Obligatory "it's still early" comment, but something doesn't seem right with Sale.  Not sure if it could be an injury, or maybe just something mechanical.
Machado
2:41
What about him is elite? Come on now.
Mark P
2:42
Since the start of the 2012 season, only 12 players have more fWAR than Machado.  That sounds pretty elite to me.

Will Guerrero be in the show this week?
Mark P
2:44
I'm assuming this is in reference to Vlad Jr. and not another Guerrero

I don't have the MLB calendar in front of me, but I think we're past the service time cutoff point by a day or two.  So the Blue Jays have safely gotten another year of control over Vladdy, and now it's just a matter of time.  The callup probably isn't coming quite as soon as this week, as the Jays want to give Vlad some time in the field to make sure he's fully recovered from his injury.  But before the end of April seems like a decent bet.

All the blame (and shame) being thrown the way of teams and agents this free agent/extension season is not unwarranted. But why do we not hear more about the fact that the MLBPA negotiated this CBA and pushed for more clubhouse and travel amenities rather than more important service time and monetary stuff?
Mark P
2:45
100% true.  MLBPA leadership really took their eye off the ball in the last set of negotiations.
2:46
As many of you have messaged, Chris Davis now has another hit!  He's 2-for-3 with three RBI today!

What is the likelihood the Rays trade snell in the next five years?
Mark P
2:47
Snell's extension takes him through the end of the 2023 season, so exactly five years.  Given the Rays' track record of moving star players, there's definitely better than a 50-50 chance Snell is dealt at some point

Do you think it’s possible we’ll see teams start extending AA or even single A players down the road?
Mark P
2:50
That seems like a bridge too far.  Teams still value seeing how a player develops at every minor league stage, even if it's obvious in some cases that a Double-A guy is clearly ready for the big leagues and is going to tear up Triple-A.  A team surely wants as much information as possible on a player to offer him a pre-MLB career extension, so why not let him go to Triple-A for a while just for due diligence

Are Logan Morrison or Evan Gattis going to sign an MLB deal?
Mark P
2:52
Very doubtful at this point

Roast beef sandwich and a bag of chips maybe?

2:52
You drive a hard bargain, Swanson!

Next CBA has to address players ' curtailed earning power once they pass 30 year old.  How much do you think younger players will achieve in the negotiations. Seems like higher minimum salary and fewer years of control are obvious gosls. What do you/MLBTR predict could happen?
Mark P
2:55
Trouble is, the league/the owners have such a significant advantage in this department that they won't give up something like a year of service time without getting another concession in return
Rob
2:56
If you're Brian Cashman do you wait it out til everyone is healthy ? Or do you try to make some early trades?
Mark P
2:57
No doubt NYY is exploring all trade avenues at all times, but yeah, I don't think there's too much panic right now.  The Yankees will re-evaluate once they have something closer to their regular roster.  What a massive run of injuries, wow.

Should Dodger fans be worried about Buehler’s slow start?
Mark P
2:59
Expecting Buehler to immediately become an ace this year was probably a reach.  He's still very young, and he also pitched by far the most innings he's ever pitched last season.
Jason Heyward

Hey, look at that. I can hit again! Or am I giving cubs fans false hope?
Mark P
3:00
Small sample size, but it's a very encouraging start.

If the tigers are still hanging around the div. And wc at deadline are they still sellers.
Mark P
3:02
If they think they have a legit shot at the postseason, they'll try to add a short-term piece or two, if not anything too major.  I could see a scenario where the Tigers are both buyers and sellers --- still willing to move a veteran who's a free agent after this season, but also looking to add a piece to help them making a surprise run

What is a reasonable term and $$ amount for a contract extension for Krush Davis?
Mark P
3:05
He's earning $16.5MM this year, so something like three years and $49-$50MM seems pretty reasonable.  Maybe for the A's to cover their bases, they only offer two guaranteed years but then a third year with a reasonable vesting option.

Davis turns 32 in December and offers nothing but power but man, it's a lot of power.
Guess Who
3:06
Why are all these sports journalists dumping the Braves for the Albies contract? No one forced him to sign anything. Folks should shut up
Mark P
3:09
At the end of the day, it's $35MM.  I can't begrudge Albies for locking up that kind of life-changing money.

But the deal is just such an outlier of a bargain that one can't help but feel that Albies is shortchanging himself.  Especially in the wake of contracts like Eloy Jimenez's deal, as Eloy will make more guaranteed money as a player with zero MLB experience prior to this season than Albies will with one star year under his belt
Dark Knight
3:10
Wish I was extended...
Mark P
3:10
I'm pretty sure Christopher Nolan has a director's cut with some bonus features and extra footage.
Oh wait, not THAT Dark Knight....

Tampa bay fans should feel better about the Rays or lightning?
Mark P
3:12
What a nightmarish two games for the Lightning.  Still lots of series left, but ouch.

3:14
Imagine the contract me, my son and his God father would get in today's market
Mark P
3:15
The amusing thing is, I had a "the Mets would be owing you money through 2150!" joke all lined up before i realized this referred to Bobby Bonds, not Bobby Bonilla
When I was a kid

We put bb cards on our spokes. Do kids have any low tech ways to enjoy the game or will the fanbase shrink with millennials
Mark P
3:18
Baseball has "had trouble attracting younger fans" for, oh, the last 100 years or so.  If anything, I actually think baseball is the ideal sport to enjoy for the online generation, given all of the extra statistical element.
Also, am I the only one who didn't stick my cards inside my bicycle wheels?  That never made sense to me...my cards were valuable!  That Todd Van Poppel rookie card was going to be worth a fortune someday!
