MLBTR Chat With Mark Polishuk
powered byJotCast
Mark P
7:17
Happy Easter weekend, everyone!  Assuming you're not at dinner with the family, let's start the chat.  Or, heck, ask even if you are at dinner....some might say it's rude to text during dinner, but these baseball questions won't answer themselves.
Erich
7:17
What do you think about Laureano?
Mark P
7:18
What an exceptional glove.  It's wild that we've seen play-of-the-year candidates in consecutive games in Oakland this weekend, between Laureano's catch today and Galvis' barehanded grab yesterday
Pads playoff
7:18
Tatis jr. looks incredible. Think he can rake like this all year??
Mark P
7:19
The likeliest answer is no, as regression is usually inevitable once pitchers get a book on a young player.  But Tatis is so highly regarded that he might be one of those Acuna/Soto types of rookies who are just awesome from day one and never really let up
Tim
7:20
Is Kimbrel going to sign before or after the amateur draft? And what team do you predict?
Mark P
7:20
By this point, I'm predicting after the draft, but that's just based on a gut feeling rather than anything concrete.  As for a team....if anything, Kimbrel's market is even more wide-open given the number of teams whose bullpens are struggling
Sam
7:21
Based on their rough start, what do you think the Red Sox record will be at the end of the year. They’re clearly still a good team but do you think they’ll be able to bounce back enough to do very well?
Mark P
7:22
I still like them for 90 wins.  There's just so much talent on that team.  They had a bad start, true, but nothing that one really good week wouldn't mostly counteract.
Andy
7:23
With Morrow having another setback, do you see the cubs making any moves to add to the bullpen?
Mark P
7:24
Potentially, but the Cubs are really trying to stay under the luxury tax threshold.  They'll have to be creative to both do that and add talent, even relatively inexpensive bullpen arms
Nick
7:25
More likely to happen: Brewers win the World Series or Bronn ends up on the Iron Throne?
Mark P
7:26
The Brewers, unless Bronn ends up with a sword called Yelichblade in tonight's episode
Ca $hman
7:26
How can I possibly replace the 2/3 of my starting lineup that's on the IL for the forsee able future??
Mark P
7:28
(This would be Yankees GM Brian Cashman, btw)

Even with all the injuries, the Yankees are still 11-10.  Frazier is breaking out, DJLM is playing very well, Voit's hitting, Sanchez is back this week....it's quite a team
Michigan Twins fan
7:28
The Twins seem like they could be pretty good this year.  No one has any faith in the twins bullpen. Do you see them making a move? Like a trade with the Giants for one of their relievers.
Mark P
7:29
I was surprised the Twins didn't do more to help their pen in the offseason, but they might feel they have enough breathing room in the AL wild card race (or even in the Central) to make moves closer to the deadline.  I absolutely see them making some calls about the Giants' guys
Joshua
7:31
Nats top 100 prospect IF Luis Garcia to Seattle for top 100 prospect 1B Evan White......does this start a legitimate trade conversation?
Mark P
7:31
It might start a conversation, but a one-for-one isn't likely to happen.  Teams generally don't go for prospect-for-prospect trades too often.
Reds offense
7:32
At some point we have to have an everyday regular hit over .180 right?
Mark P
7:33
I don't guarantee much in these chats, but you can put this one on the board.....a Reds player WILL hit over .180 this season.  That's Paul Anka's guarantee!*

* = guarantee void in Tennessee
Les Gomez
7:34
What’s the remedy to the Mets’ pitching woes?
Mark P
7:35
"Dallas Keuchel and/or Gio Gonzalez!" --- everyone in Queens

I'm pretty sure Thor isn't going to be this shaky all year, same with Wheeler or Matz.  Though if I'm the Mets, I'm crossing my fingers that deGrom's injury is as minor as they claim
Rick
7:35
Have you guys explored the idea of setting up a podcast(s)?
Mark P
7:37
We used to have a weekly MLBTR podcast a few years ago, though abandoned the idea for a few different reasons.  Chiefly, a weekly roundup of trade/free agent news seemed a bit pointless if we were just getting around to big topics that happened several days earlier.
Just curious
7:38
On the podcast note, ever think about live chat via webcam so we can see the blockheads we all love to chat with?
Mark P
7:39
I doubt a webcam will ever happen, though if you want to know what I look like, Ryan Gosling has often been described as "a poor man's Mark Polishuk"
Tigers Fan
7:39
Derek Norris had such promise when he was acquired in the David Price deal.  He looked good today.  Is there any consensus on whether he could still fulfill some of the promise that made him a top 25 prospect a couple years ago?
Mark P
7:40
First off, I'm assuming you mean Daniel Norris.

Stranger things have happened than a player having a late-career breakout.  The Tigers aren't in any rush to contend, so they have the luxury of taking their time with Norris to see if he really can turn into at least a decent rotation piece
Rick
7:42
So what do the A's do when Olson returns in 2 weeks? Trade Morales? Option Canha?
Mark P
7:43
Morales cost them basically nothing and is hitting very poorly, so I'd guess he'd be the odd man out once Olson gets back.  While Canha is optionable, he's also hitting really well and has more defensive versatility than Kendrys
Reeses Pieces
7:43
What are the A's doing with their rotation? They had 6 months to figure it out, did next to nothing, and now are losing very winnable games because their starters aren't very good.
Mark P
7:44
I kind of figured Oakland would do more with their rotation than just Fiers/Anderson/Estrada.  I actually had the A's as a possible dark horse for Keuchel as the months rolled on and his price (maybe?) dropped.
7:45
Oakland's issue is that they still don't know what they have with their young guys, plus most of them were going to be back at some point, so the A's were wary of spending big on pitching when they might have had their solutions already in-house.

Granted, this seems like a "good problem to have" situation, especially for a team that wants to contend.  But then again, it isn't my money being spent.

7:46
Is The Jose Quintana trade the worst trade of the 21st century?
Mark P
7:47
Quintana isn't an ace but he's at least been decently solid.  It's not even in the 100 worst trades of the century.
Arte Moreno
7:48
Will I make a serious run at Garrett Cole this offseason? Southern California guy. It makes sense right?
Mark P
7:49
I would've thought the Angels would've made a run at some of the bigger arms this winter, though they came up short in their pursuits.  I'm sure the Halos will check in on Cole, though it depends if they're willing to cut another big free agent contract
Mike
7:49
Any ideas on a way the union can fight for earlier money on controllable players? What are they gonna have to sacrifice with the owners seemingly having all or most of the leverage?
Mark P
7:52
This is a good question, and I honestly don't know the answer.  For all of the talk about what the MLBPA needs to do in the next set of collective bargaining agreement talks, I feel like the toothpaste is already out of the tube on a lot of these issues.  The owners have already gotten so far much of an advantage, they might not see a need to make many/any concessions.
