if the nationals fall out of the race is there any chance they shop scherzer?
Mark P
7:53
Almost certainly no
7:54
Brutal update on Matt Shoemaker.....torn ACL, gone for the season.  That's a tough break for a guy who was pitching so well for the first month.
Lenny Dykstra
7:56
is Alonso the “David Wright” superstar in the making the Mets hoped Wright would have become??
Mark P
7:57
Let's give it more than a few weeks before we start anointing a guy the new David Wright.

And wait, Wright "wasn't" a superstar?  The guy put up borderline HOF numbers for a solid decade before his injuries got too severe.  He had a tough end to his career, for sure, but surely Mets fans are more than happy with the David Wright experience
The Show

Who wins the Super Bowl for the upcoming season?
Mark P
7:58
I'm a Packers fan, so I'm hopeful they can get back on track after a long-overdue coaching change.

But, the real answer is the Patriots again
Tony Harrison
7:59
Do you think Jeter looks at Yellich's old Marlins jersey everynight and sheds a quiet tear?
Mark P
8:01
Realistically, it'll be years before we can access that deal since most of the prospects the Marlins got are still very young.  And Brinson is still just 24 with less than a full season's worth of PA under his belt.

But man, if we're talking early candidates for worst trades of the century...
Mike
8:02
I think teams should be able to designate a franchise player that is excluded from Luxury Tax calculation. Hard to believe you can't make up salary cap rules on the fly for a pretend salary cap. Thoughts?
Mark P
8:03
This sounds like the Designated Player rule in Major League Soccer, a.k.a the David Beckham rule.  As per this year, a team can have as many as three DPs on their roster that only count for $250K (I think that's the current amount) on a team's salary cap tally, but their actual salaries can be sky-high
8:04
This would actually be an interesting idea for the next CBA talks.
Ian
8:05
Can the Pirates, with their pitching and some of these rookies like Cole Tucker, be interesting?
Mark P
8:06
Absolutely.  I don't think anyone really thought Pittsburgh would be a "bad" team this season --- just underwhelming, given their division and the team's lack of interest in spending.  If they get breakouts from a couple of these younger players, they can certainly make some noise
Just a guy
8:07
3. How many questions do you think I can ask before one of them finally gets answered. If you are AA what do you do to address the bullpen, it seems to me that outside help needs to be the number 1 option since in house options are not cutting it?
Mark P
8:09
(AA being Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos)

Obligatory "it's still early" answer, but losing Arodys for the season should absolutely create some urgency for the Braves.  They can try to mix and match the young guys in the pen but I expect Atlanta to make an addition before the deadline, perhaps well before the deadline
Wannabe GM
8:10
How do the Rays do it????
Mark P
8:11
They scout well, develop their players well, and they seem to have had a couple of good recent drafts after a few underwhelming draft years in a row.  They're willing to experiment with anything, and the front office/Kevin Cash can get the players to buy into these experiments.  It's a good combination, topped off with a bit of "nobody believes in us" motivation, and there you go

Mark Melancon and Cash for Cristian Pache? Who say No?
Mark P
8:12
The Braves.  If they're willing to move Pache for a reliever, they can do better than a question mark like Melancon
(I didn't mean to make a question mark/Mark pun there, I swear)
Justin
8:13
Jays in on Gonzalez and/or Keuchel?
Mark P
8:14
Keuchel no, Gio mayyyyybe depending on the price tag.  Jays are still in a rebuild, remember, they're not going to break the bank on pitching.
Spurs fan
8:14
Which are your favorites teams in the other leagues ?
Mark P
8:15
I'm a Toronto sports guy, so the Maple Leafs, Raptors, TFC.  In the NFL, it's the Packers.
Willie
8:17
Giants are playing with no inspiration. Is it time for a complete rebuild?
Mark P
8:18
There's only so much rebuilding you can do with so many underperforming players on big contracts (many of which have no-trade protection).  I don't think ownership has the stomach for a multi-year, scorched-earth rebuild like the Astros and Cubs.
Nick
8:19
Is Oakland's willingness to pay Murray that much more money an example of 1st round picks being worth much more than the allotment numbers?
Mark P
8:21
Bingo.  The draft pools are 80% there to control salaries, with 10% so the big-market teams can't just go above-slot to sign everyone, and 10% to personally annoy Scott Boras.  (I'm kidding about that last one...I think)
8:22
The players share in some of the blame here as well.  The draft and international pools were put in place somewhat under the players' noses, since the veterans seemed to take something of a "why should these unproven kids get all this money?" stance
Brian M
8:22
Do you think well see anymore expansion(teams) in the near future?
Mark P
8:23
I think the commissioner was on record as saying that MLB would only look to expand once all 30 teams (i.e. Tampa and Oakland) had their situations settled.  I'd say we're probably a good decade away from expansion
Toronto... No wonder
8:24
No wonder you don't answer AL West questions... especially Astros questions... Who do the Astros replace in their lineup or rotation to get better?
Mark P
8:25
Hey, I have no issue with the AL West!
The 4-5 spots in the Astros rotation need some help, whether it's promoting Whitley or acquiring someone.
8:26
As for the lineup....geez, who could you possibly want to replace?  Everyone has been on fire at the plate.
Max Fried
8:27
May be one of the 5 best pitchers in baseball...T or F?
Mark P
8:28
Lots of potential but come on, false.
Ryan
8:29
How hard is it to sign a player who you traded away?
Mark P
8:30
It depends on the player, really.  A lot of guys don't have any hard feelings about a team swinging a deal.....if it's a case where the player is dealt to a contender at the deadline, for instance, the player might even appreciate it.
