MLBTR Chat With Mark Polishuk

Salutations!  Bit of a late start to tonight's chat but let's get cracking!
Nick C

If you were Brodie, who would you be trading in July and in the offseason for the Mets?
Mark P
8:39
The impending free agents (Wheeler, Frazier, Vargas if any takers can be found) are the most obvious guys to go right now.  Come the offseason, it really depends on what direction ownership and the front office choose to take.  From BVW's comments on Friday, it doesn't seem like a rebuild is coming, so dealing deGrom, Thor, etc. doesn't seem likely
Grade the Homer Bailey trade
8:40
A’s winners or losers here?
Mark P
8:41
The prospect cost and financial cost is so little that it's hard to say Oakland has really "lost" anything.  Bailey can be a stopgap for now with a bit of upside potential, but if he struggles and the Athletics' young arms start finally getting healthy, I could see the A's cutting Bailey

Stroman for Gosuke Katoh, Jonathon Holder and Albert Abreu.
Mark P
8:42
Jays would need a lot more than that from NYY to move Stroman
Grasping at straws
8:43
Corey Kluber a trade chip?
Mark P
8:44
Not this summer, since he almost surely won't be back on the mound until after the deadline
FF
8:45
Who will be the most surprising team to be BUYERS at the trade deadline?
Mark P
8:45
I guess we can't rule out the Giants, since they're still just 4.5 out of the wild card and they're been on a roll lately.  But I think it's still more likely they'll sell.
8:46
You could also see some teams that aren't truly in contention (i.e. the White Sox, maaaaybe Seattle) make some "buyer" trades as a headstart on their winter acquisitions
Elias
8:47
Cashner gone who am I moving next
Mark P
8:47
(This would be Orioles' GM Mike Elias)

The O's are open to offers on virtually everyone, so the sky's the limit for Baltimore trades.  Wouldn't at all be surprising to see Bundy or Mancini moved
Mick
8:48
Best prediction who the NYY acquire to bolster their pitching.
Mark P
8:49
I stand by my theory (based only on my always-foolproof intuition) that the Yankees will land another ace reliever rather than a top starter before the deadline.  They might get a starter who's more of a back-of-the-rotation type, but I think their pitching focus might be to rely on the pen through the playoffs

One of the Giants problems is hitting. It appears to be systemwide. Is this the faulty of the hitting coach or that the players [Including Posey, Belt, and Crawford] aren't very good. If the latter, should management blow up the team and try to market the "core" too?
Mark P
8:52
The Giants' problem is that their "core" guys are (like you said) mostly underproducing.  Factor in their big salaries and partial-to-full no-trade clauses in almost everyone's contract, and it doesn't lend itself to a lot of attractive trade chips
Tellez
8:53
Will it be getting Rowdy again in Toronto as soon as Justin Smoak is traded?
Mark P
8:53
In all likelihood, yes.  Tellez hasn't been hitting well, so a couple of weeks in Triple-A to get his timing back could do a world of wonders
Enrique Martinez
8:54
Can the dbacks find a way to to either make a great trade and start competing and getting better immediately?!!!! And will they make the playoffs this yr in your opinion?
Mark P
8:55
My guess is the D'Backs will fall short.  Like pretty much everyone in the NL, they're in the wild card race, but they have a lot of teams to leapfrog (and obviously they have no hope of catching the Dodgers in the West).
The funky bunch
8:56
Who in the NL Central should be Sellers and who should be buyers? It's such a tight race.
Mark P
8:58
I can honestly see all five teams make deadline additions.  The Reds are furthest back, but they've outright stated they're planning on being buyers: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/07/reds-trade-deadline-buyers-rumo...

I do not like Alonso batting second in the order. Shouldn't he be the cleanup hitter?
Mark P
8:59
I'm in favour of putting one's best hitters as close to the top of the order as possible, so 2nd for Alonso sounds good to me
Luis
9:00
Does a deal to get Kelvin Herrera and Alex Colome over to Atlanta make any sense? I'm sure that has potential to solidify the pen
Mark P
9:01
Herrera has been struggling so badly that I don't think he'll get much deadline attention (if any).

9:02
Twins land greinke? Could be an under the radar move
Mark P
9:03
Twins are one of the teams on Greinke's no-trade list, so it largely depends on whether he'd be amenable to going to Minnesota.

Beyond that, I dunno, that's a lot of salary for a mid-market team like the Twins to take on, even if the D'Backs covered a good chunk of the contract
Trader
9:03
Why so many teams are close to playoffs and no make a move?
Mark P
9:05
There are so few teams in total sell mode that they're able to put big asking prices on their trade chips.  So, contenders are balking at these prices for now.  Plus, a lot of teams aren't yet sure if they're really "in the race" or have a legit chance at contending.  Don't forget, a lot of teams don't see the value in going all-in on trades just for a shot at a wild card game
Giles
9:06
Could I decide the NL pennant based on who scoops me up?
Mark P
9:07
Sure, anything could happen.  We've also seen plenty of instances where an innocuous minor trade ends up being a huge factor on a pennant race
John
9:07
Is sonny gray a trade candidate?
Mark P
9:08
My guess is no, given that the Reds already extended him in the offseason.  They see him as a building block, and his performance this season has only reinforced that belief
Phillies should be sellers
9:08
Right?
Mark P
9:09
They're in possession of a wild card spot, so no dice
Leo

What are you hearing about Matt Boyd? Sorry, I’ve sent this many times but not sure if it’s actually sending, thanks
Mark P
9:10
A lot of teams interested, but it depends if anyone will step up to meet the Tigers' big asking price: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/07/dodgers-braves-rays-interested-...
