MLBTR Chat With Mark Polishuk

Hi everyone, welcome to the last Sunday chat before the trade deadline!  We've already seen some big deals go down today, so fire away with the questions.
Megan

What are the Mets doing
Mark P
11:50
Baseball fans the world over are asking this question.  Adding Stroman gives them flexibility....they can either keep everybody and go for it in 2020 or even (in long shot fashion) this year, or they can trade one of Syndergaard or Wheeler now.
11:51
Now, it's kind of a head-scratcher since Wheeler certainly won't net them as much as they gave up to Toronto for Stroman.  Syndergaard would likely get more than Stroman....except then you're dealing Syndergaard.

Where do you have Thor going?
Mark P
11:53
At last sighting, he was going into space with the Guardians of the Galaxy (or, if you prefer, the Asgardians of the Galaxy).

In more of a serious answer, I'm suddenly leaning a lot more towards the Mets actually dealing Syndergaard than I was 12 hours ago.  I still have to think San Diego is the favorite, even if the latest reports aren't optimistic

11:54
Are the tigers trying to trade anybody at the deadline?
Tigers
11:54
Does the stroman to mets trade hurt the tigers or help them mets got stroman for cheap which could lower return but on the other hand it knocks a pitcher off the market
Mark P
11:55
I'm not sure the Stroman deal impacts Detroit's plans too much.  Boyd's market is unchanged since the Mets weren't in on him anyway, plus I think the league generally considers Boyd to be a tier or two under Stroman anyway.
11:56
Beyond Boyd, Greene and Castellanos are the prime chips, but they're probably open for business on basically any veteran.

11:57
Couldn’t Stroman have been traded for more?
Mark P
11:58
I would've guessed that he would've landed at least one top-100 prospect.  Perhaps we're underestimating just how loath front offices are to trade top prospects for ANYONE who isn't a truly elite player.

That said, Kay and Woods Richardson are pretty solid young arms.  Kay could help the Jays as early as next season (hesitant to say this year since he hasn't done much in Triple-A).

Blue Jays hurt themselves by not waiting 2 days. Agree or Disagree?
*** Monday, July 29 ***

Hard to agree without knowing what some of the other offers on the table involved.  Obviously the Jays weren't going to get, like, Gleyber Torres, but for all know, maybe other teams were trying to lowball the Jays, knowing that they basically *had* to deal Stroman.
Hey Mark
12:01
What do the Cards do with Carpenter? They're winning without him and he's had two good months in the last two years.
Mark P
12:02
I'm not sure there's anything they can do except hope he turns things around.  That extension (like a troubling number of long-term STL deals in recent years) is suddenly looking like a bad move
Jaime Lannister
12:02
Thoughts on Bauer this afternoon?
Mark P
12:03
We were probably overdue for someone to have a big mound meltdown, it's been a while.
12:04
Other than that, I don't see it being a huge deal.  It's probably not going to suddenly convince the Tribe to trade him by Wednesday --- they need him for the pennant race
Clhuck
12:04
Felipe Vasquez will be traded to who Wed ??
Mark P
12:05
If I had to guess, Vazquez stays put.  Pirates GM Neal Huntington has been pretty adamant about keeping him, and while it wouldn't be the first time a general manager has publicly changed course, I suspect the Bucs stand pat unless they get a huge offer from someone
Gmen777
12:06
With Marcus Stroman off the board what would it realistically take to get the Giants to even consider moving Bumgarner?
Mark P
12:07
A couple of top-50 types of prospects, and probably at least one MLB player that could help them right now.

But Bumgarner isn't getting traded.  It's too close to the deadline, and the Giants have just kept on winning.  They're not going to deal him now --- it'd be too much of a gut-punch to the fanbase
Steve
12:07
Are the Astros willing to move Kyle Tucker?
Mark P
12:08
They've basically, but not 100%, said they aren't: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/07/astros-reluctant-to-deal-kyle-t...

Think the Angels are gonna add? I think they’re a sleeper for one of the big names considering they absolutely plan on contending in 2020 and they need like 4 more arms
Mark P
12:10
Five games back of the wild card, 55-52 record....I can see them adding something, but not one of the big names.  The Angels have spent so much time rebuilding their farm system from nothing that I'm not sure they'd knock it down now to land Bauer, Thor, etc.

12:10
How is it that days ago we were hearing that the Jays wanted Garcia-plus-plus from the Yankees, then settled on what they got from the Mets?
Mark P
12:11
I would imagine that every team aims high in their initial trade ask, just in case you happen to find a team desperate/crazy enough to actually say yes.  It's just a routine part of negotiations.
Joseph
12:11
If the Dodgers are able to land Felipe Vazquez, are they done? Or do they also get 1 more bullpen arm like Chris Martin or Tony Watson? If so how much would the last 2 cost?
Mark P
12:12
Getting two relievers might be a bit much, since Vazquez and Watson will both cost a lot.  In the Dodgers' case, SF will ask more for Watson from them than they would from any non-archrival.

Could we see the Reds deal Gray or someone bigger like scooter or Derek. Do they buy or sell
Mark P
12:14
Reds are seven games under .500, and seven games back of the wild card.  My guess is they starting selling.  I highly doubt they'd move Gray after extending him over the winter, but Gennett or Dietrich both seem like potential trade candidates.  Maybe not Gennett since he's struggled so much since returning from the IL
Les Gomez
12:15
Could Diaz get the Mets Verdugo?
Mark P
12:15
I highly doubt Verdugo's going anywhere.  Dodgers held onto him for a long time, and now he's finally in the big leagues and producing.

12:16
How much is the international penalty box impacting Braves willingness to make a trade?
Mark P
12:17
This is an underrated aspect of the Braves' trade plans.  I think it was Buster Olney who pointed this out recently --- Atlanta has a lot of good prospects at the moment, but their ability to generate more in the future is limited by their restrictions in the international market.  So the Braves have particular value in Pache, Anderson, Riley, etc.

Are the Twins done at Romo, or is there more?  Please tell me there will be more.
Mark P
12:18
My guess is they'll get more.  Another SP seems like a must, and Romo is likely not the only bullpen addition
NV
12:21
Are the dodgers still looking at SP?
