Ranking from most to least likely to win another title in the near future, I'd go Chiefs, SKC, Royals.

Any NFL team with an elite quarterback is a threat to win the Super Bowl, and Mahomes definitely looks like such a QB.  Sporting KC has a better shot than the Royals since there's so much randomness in MLS on a year-to-year basis

If Cole isn’t going to hit 200 mil...think there’s a shot he stays in Houston? Astros could always re-deal Grienke, and I feel like the more realistic his bidding stays...the more likely he could be to stay as well
Mark P

I suspect that extending Verlander and then acquiring Greinke likely put an end to Cole's days in Houston

Why do the Mets get my hopes up only to turn around and crush them? Will it ever all come together?
Mark P
9:14
Put it this way --- at least you're feeling way more optimistic about your team than you did six weeks ago

Adding Cole and Ohtani to the rotation, plus putting Adell in right field, would that be enough to boost the Angels into contention in the AL West next season?
Mark P
9:16
You'd be asking a lot of Adell in his rookie season, plus a lot of Ohtani coming off a major surgery.  I'd also guess that the Angels would need even more pitching than that

Can a gm with the new rules put a player on revocable waivers and let them go if claimed and keep the player if not claimed?  This would be cbbc real useful for teams out of it with expiring contracts that may or may not be willing to be paid by some contender for remaining of year.
Mark P
9:17
"Revocable waivers" don't exist anymore in August

What are you hearing about Stanton coming back this year?
Mark P
9:18
Last update had Stanton still making progress, hopeful of returning before the end of the season

Wouldn't it be wiser for the pirates to take a step back and re-build? Marte, polanco, and Vasquez immediately re-stock the farm on their own and the central is going to be stacked again next year. Take a step back next
Mark P
9:20
I don't disagree.  I don't think Pirates management (or ownership) wants such a big overhaul, but I think the team is a lot further away from contending than they believe

When do I start inking some legit free agents?
Mark P
9:21
(This would be the Jays' GM)

My guess is the 2020-21 offseason at the earliest.  The Jays will target lower-tier veteran types again this year, if perhaps a step up from last year's crop of Galvis, Sogard, Shoemaker, Buchholz, etc.

How do the Rays and A's keep winning with terrible starting pitching????
Mark P
9:23
The Rays and A's are 4th and 11th, respectively, in starting pitcher fWAR this season.  So "terrible" is a real overstatement.  But, T-Bay and Oakland are also two of the league's better defensive teams, which goes a long way towards making the pitching look better

What do the Pirates do with Archer?  Decline option?  exercise option and try to trade?  Exercise and keep?
Mark P
9:25
Neal Huntington has more or less said that they're going to exercise Archer's option.  That's really their only choice, since his trade value is rock-bottom and letting him leave for nothing would make a bad trade look like even more of a disaster
Twins
9:27
What about an August 31 trade deadline to coincide with playoff rosters, so all the final moves are made at once?
Mark P
9:27
August 31 is too late in the season.  If MLB sticks with the "one true trade deadline" approach, I'd suggest somewhere between August 10-15th

Will Gavin Lux play second next year for Dodgers or do they hold him back to replace Turner in 2021
Mark P
9:29
I have to believe Lux will be getting at least semi-regular at-bats by next season, unless the Dodgers want him to break Barry Bonds' record in Triple-A in 2020

Does Dylan Carlson get to the majors sooner rather than later. The guy is eating minor league pitching alive.
Mark P
9:32
The Cardinals haven't been shy about bringing their top prospects to the big leagues, so I think he's here by next season the latest

That's it for tonight's chat, we'll see you next week!
