Should the o's Fire Brandon Hyde?
Mark P
1:52
No, why would they?  His job wasn't to win this season, it was to teach and help develop the young players
QO
1:53
Who do you see declining a QO and fail to land a multi year contract? Any one of those holding out after the draft to sign?
Mark P
1:54
My colleague Connor Byrne had projections up earlier this week about the players that seem likeliest to get qualifying offers, so for reference....

I could see someone like Jake Odorizzi being left in Keuchel/Kimbrel limbo if he rejects a QO.  He did have a boost in strikeouts and velocity this year, however, so teams could feel safer about him (or more willing to give up a draft pick) than they did Keuchel.

Gerrit Cole to White Sox?  Chances?
Mark P
2:00
That would absolutely fit the frontline starter need I mentioned earlier in another White Sox question

It'll all come down to money, of course, and until the ChiSox actually sign someone to a mega-deal, we probably shouldn't pencil them in as clear factors for big free agents.  Cole will get a lot of interest for big dollars --- the White Sox can't try to get cute with the final details about a contract with him, as they did last year with Machado

After reading Steve's piece about the Astros and the luxury tax...is there anything they can realistically do this offseason?
Mark P
2:01
Here's Steve's piece, if anyone else wants to check it out: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/10/astros-rumors-luxury-tax-gerrit...
2:05
Osuna, Reddick, maayyyybe even Correa could all traded.

Or, and this sounds completely outlandish of course....the Astros could just pay the luxury tax.  It's not much money at all, especially not for a team that is contending for championships and is raking in lots of extra revenue thanks to playoff games.

Spending $227MM in payroll in 2020 would cost Houston only around $4MM in tax penalties.  Not exactly a big penalty.

Who do the M's trade for/sign to fill out the rotation behind Gonzales, Kikuchi, and Sheffield in 2020? Dunn will probably start the year at AAA, and LeBlanc and Milone are as good as gone, so they need a couple of arms.
Mark P
2:06
They'll aim for lower-cost veterans, to eat innings and basically just be place-holders until 2021 when Seattle (theoretically) starts trying to contend again

2:07
Has  Lance Lynn done enough to merit a multi year deal? Who signs him?
Mark P
2:08
Lynn isn't a free agent this winter, he just inked a three-year deal with Texas last offseason
Brandon
2:09
Are the Giants going to wait until Belt/Crawford, Shark/Cueto are off the books or close to it to bring in some more top end free agents? I know they went after Harper and Stanton but besides Cole and Rendon there isn't that much high end talent available this off season.
Mark P
2:11
Probably, though the four players you mentioned are all relatively "close to" off the books.  Samardzija is a free agent after 2020, and Cueto/Crawford/Belt after 2021.  That theoretically shouldn't stop SF from making a push for a big free agent if they really wanted, say, Gerrit Cole.
2:12
Moving Melancon was an underrated nice move for the Giants, I was surprised to see his contract get moved

Does Austin Hays make the Orioles Opening Day roster?
Mark P
2:12
I don't see why he wouldn't

2:12
Why do teams tend to wait to sign managers during the post season?
Mark P
2:14
A lot of teams have interest in speaking to coaches on current playoff clubs, for one.  But in general, teams just like doing their due diligence on making a managerial hire.  Even if you have a couple of top candidates in mind from the jump, it doesn't hurt to have several interviews to pick the brains of several different candidates.  You never know who might impress in an interview, or emerge as a candidate for another job (bench coach, front office advisor, etc.) beyond manager
Mark Turner
2:15
Extend Ken Giles 4/32?
Mark P
2:15
I'd be surprised if Ken Giles is still a Blue Jays by Opening Day, and downright stunned if he was signed to an extension

Will the A’s upgrade second base and drop Profar? He was pretty bad both offensively and defensively.
Mark P
2:18
I'm not sure about dropping him outright, since he'll still be relatively inexpensive.  But you're right, he doesn't seem like a viable everyday option on a team contending for the postseason.
Killing me smalls
2:18
Since securing pitching is the Angels top priority this winter, do you think it would be disadvantagoues for the Angels to go after Cole knowing the trend with Boras top FA's has been to wait till Jan, Feb or even March to sign? I feel the Angels need to sign/trade for multiple rotation arms and waiting on Cole could potentially put them without a seat at the dinner table when the bell finally rings
Mark P
2:20
There's nothing stopping the Angels from acquiring another SP in the interim months while waiting on Cole.  The team has enough money to afford multiple arms, which you're correct in saying they need.
Mike
2:20
Yanks pick up ee option? Let him mentor andjuar??
Mark P
2:22
My guess is that the Yankees buy out the option, though they could try to re-sign him at a lower price tag than $20MM.

Would it make any sense for Detroit to gamble on some high upside guys? Like Maikel Franco? Will Myers with salary paid down? Similar to what Minnesota did last off-season.
Mark P
2:24
Makes sense.  And Detroit is exactly the type of team that should be approaching the Padres and saying "hey, we'll take Myers and eat all his salary, as long as you give us some really good prospects to make it worth our while."

I’m tired of being traded.  When can I stick to one team. I was traded 34 times last year

2:27
Do you expect a bounce back season from Lorenzo Cain? Guy is a true ball player and fun to watch, especially when healthy
Mark P
2:27
Seems like Cain was bothered by injuries all year long, so if he's healthy, there's certainly reason to believe he can get back to his old self
Still a Giants fan
2:28
A while back, the Mariners did something no one really thought they'd do and brought in a huge name in Robinson Cano. Who's the next "no one could've predicted this" big name the Mariners get
Mark P
2:29
But if predict a name, then that automatically makes my choice invalid as someone "no one could've predicted" would sign with the Mariners.

Will Didi take the highest offer and leave the Yankees or take a hometeam discount?
Mark P
2:31
Gregorius is a guy who I think would strongly consider taking a qualifying offer.  If he isn't issued a QO, my guess is he walks for a team that can give him a clear starting role in 2020, which isn't necessarily the case on a Yankees team that can always just move Gleyber to shortstop
Charles Finley
2:31
The Cano deal is a terrific example of a big contract working out, though.  M’s got 5 good to great years of Cano, then traded the other 5 years to the Mets XD
