MLBTR Chat With Mark Polishuk

What better time to start a chat than almost exactly when Game 2 of the ALCS begins?  Regardless, let's go!
Astros Fan

Do The Astros pick up Wheeler if they don’t sign back Miley or Cole?
Mark P
8:07
I would guess no, since the Astros have tended to pursue less-expensive starters (or even borderline reclamation projects) rather than someone like Wheeler, who will cost a QO draft pick and a big multi-year contract
Dodgers Lost Again
8:08
Who will win Nationals or Cardinals in the NLCS?
Mark P
8:08
At this point, it's pretty hard to pick against Washington with a 2-0 lead
FA
8:08
I see Porcello as a reclamation project in Houston. With great success
Mark P
8:09
Porcello is exactly the type of guy the Astros might target, to see if they can get him back on track

Do u think it’s imperative the jays are able to sign one or more of their young guns ( Bichette vladdy I guess Cavan Biggio ) to a long term deal now in order to keep the band together down the road ?
Mark P
8:11
I don't think there's any immediate rush, since that trio are all less than a season into their MLB careers.  I also wonder whether the concept of an early-career extension would appeal to those three in particular, since none are exactly hurting for money (since their dads were all big league stars) and might not have the desire to lock in that early fortune
John Middleton
8:11
Am I actually allowing my GM to search for a manager?  I know who I want right?
Mark P
8:14
John Middleton being the Phillies' owner, fyi

I mean, every owner is the one ultimately making the call on a managerial hire.  And given the Phils' early candidates, Middleton clearly seems to have a preference for a veteran manager (Showalter, Dusty, Girardi) rather than another first-timer like Kapler
Long suffering Dodgers’ fan
8:14
do you think that the Dodgers should have fired Roberts and gone after a managerial upgrade?
Mark P
8:15
I can see the case for both sides, to give a real fence-sitting answer.  It could be that a managerial change is needed to get the Dodgers over this next hill, just as a change was seemingly needed from Mattingly to Roberts to get the Dodgers into the World Series
8:17
But that said, Roberts is obviously a good manager.  You can't ignore a 106-win season.  And with a couple of breaks going the other way in 2017, the Dodgers already have a WS title under his tenure

How likely is the A’s move to Vegas?
Mark P
8:19
I don't know all the particulars of the Oakland stadium situation, but the recent city of Oakland lawsuit and Manfred's subsequent threat about a potential franchise move sounded a bit more like sabre-rattling than a legitimate threat.

8:20
Las Vegas is obviously a bit of a boogeyman to Oakland fans right now given the Raiders' impending move, so I can see the commissioner's logic in invoking that particular city
At this point, I still tend to think the A's will get this new ballpark built and remain in Oakland, though that's far from a certainty
Adrian
8:20
Odorizzi, Miley, Gibson, Nova, Porcello, Miley. This the pool of FA SP you expect Jays to swim in?
Mark P
8:21
Closer to the Porcello/Gibson side of the pool than the Odorizzi side.
Cleveland Fan
8:21
Which of their young pitchers have significant trade value, and what are some 2nd or 3rd base trade targets?
Mark P
8:23
I'm not necessarily sure the Tribe would move any of their younger pitching, since they don't know what to expect from Kluber and Carrasco going forward.  Better to keep that depth, as valuable as trading a young arm would be in helping them land....well, almost anything
Gary F.
8:23
Is it time for the Giants to move on from Brandon Crawford at SS?
Mark P
8:24
Yes, but since he has a no-trade clause, the Giants would have to eat the remaining $30MM on his contract, which probably isn't happening
AZ Ranger
8:25
Could the Rangers trade for both Longoria and Myers (separate trades) and get a prospect in the trade if they take most of the money on?
Mark P
8:25
Sure, but why would the Rangers want either Longoria or Myers?
Angels
8:26
Who are realistic targets for the Angels to pursue in the offseason?
Mark P
8:27
They have the resources to pursue any free agent starter available, including Gerrit Cole.  Seems like the Angels need multiple pitchers, so I can see them making one big acquisition and then more of a second-tier add as well
Joe.
8:28
Is there any chance that the Mets go after Rendon this offseason?  It sure would be nice to see them get a superstar from within the division.  Between Murphy, then Harper....
Mark P
8:28
Given how the Mets usually limit their spending, I would be very surprised to see them splurge on Rendon
Lamar Hoyt
8:29
Will my white Sox sign JD Martinez if/when he opts out?
Mark P
8:30
There aren't a ton of obvious DH openings for Martinez, since I find it hard to believe that he'd take on a full-time outfield job with an NL team at his age (and with his history of foot problems).  So the ChiSox make as much sense as anyone, if they do intend to take a step forward into contention in 2020

Fill in the blank: The next manager of the Kansas City Kansas is______________
Mark P

Mike Matheny still looks like the favorite

8:32
Realistic to move Santana to first base?
Mark P
8:33
Domingo Santana has never played first base during his entire pro career, so it's hard to say.  As Ron Washington told us all in Moneyball, playing first base is "incredibly hard."

Why the same managers get manager jobs?  Showalter and Baker have been fired so often.  They dont deserve another chance
Mark P
8:35
Showalter and Baker also have proven track records of turning struggling teams into postseason contenders, even if both have never managed an actual World Series winner.

It seems like baseball has largely moved away from the "retread manager" concept in favor of younger, most recently-retired ex-players.  I generally agree with this idea since a lot of the "retread" types were guys who kept getting jobs despite never really winning anywhere.  Showalter and Baker are much more accomplished, however.
Adrian
8:36
Ken Giles for Josiah Gray?
Mark P
8:36
I'd guess the Jays take that deal in a heartbeat, but the Dodgers wouldn't have interest.
