Angels are at 127 million with Calhoun being brought out. Leaves them at 81 million available under the luxury tax limit. Is the following possible which would put them at 193 which is still under the 208 mlb luxury tax limit: Cole 220/7 years(32m) Wheeler 72/4 years(18) Grandal 64/4 years(16) Which contracts do you think are off base? Angels have had over 3 million fans show up constantly and have a tv contract of 150m a year. The Angels can cover that extra 43m easily with the dedication of the fans.
Still technically room for Calhoun with the 14m and be under. I think they can renegotiate a lower contract. 14m is a bit high.

72/4 seems high for me in regards to Wheeler, and I think the Angels will let Calhoun walk and go with Goodwin/Adell in the outfield alongside Trout and Upton.

So there's certainly room for LAA to spend, and if they went slightly over the luxury tax limit, they could probably duck under it again without too much trouble in 2021 since Simmons and Cozart are coming off the books.
6:55
Or they could slightly exceed it in consecutive years, pay a relatively small tax fine, and then a lot of room after 2021 when Pujols' deal is up

Why did the Red Sox, with basically the same team as last year, take such a step back this year?
Mark P
6:57
Basically everything went right for the Sox in 2018, whereas there were a few more injuries and semi-down years for a lot of players in 2019.  Simple as that.
Bo Sox

Should we deal Chris Sale to NL team?
Mark P
7:00
Depends on your definition of "should."  If the Red Sox have buyer's remorse only a year into a contract, that's something of a red flag for any interested teams, wouldn't you think?

Do you think the Rockies can get rid of their high-priced players such as wade davis and Bryan Shaw?
Mark P
7:01
Steve Adams wrote a piece about Colorado's payroll situation the other day: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/10/rockies-trade-rumors-trevor-sto...
7:02
Basically, trading Davis or Shaw wouldn't be impossible, though their contract clauses make it rather tricky.  The Rox could take on another bad contract or something, but that's not really much of a net positive

Talented teams like Dodgers , A’s and to a lesser degree , the Twins keep failing in the playoffs. The players are different, could it be front office negative energy seeping into the dugout or is it just bad luck?
Mark P
7:05
I think luck plays a bigger role that we're willing to admit in these things.  And it only takes one year for a perennial postseason disappointment to suddenly win, i.e. this year's Nationals

Your thoughts on chances Blue Jays persue Ozuna?
Mark P
7:07
Pretty low.  The Jays have Gurriel and Grichuk for two OF spots, and will be sifting through their remaining outfield options (Teoscar and company) for the third spot.  Also, the Jays are likely loath to give up a draft pick to sign Ozuna, since he'll have a qualifying offer attached

Matt Carpenter costs $19 mil, can’t play defense, and hit .220 last season. What do I do?
Mark P
7:08
(This would be Cardinals president of baseball ops John Mozeliak)

All you can do is hope Carpenter bounces back at third base, and maybe move Edman into the outfield

re Red Sox, if that's true what you said about bad luck etc., why do they fire their GM one year after winning it all?
Mark P
7:11
It seemed like there were some issues with Dombrowski behind the scenes in Boston, since the team even apparently considered firing him after last season
That situation was so unusual that it's perhaps just an outlier, and not a comp for other front offices

Do you think its possible Oakland will make a trade for a superstar like Mookie Betts this offseason? Just to help get them past the wild card game?
Mark P
7:12
The A's would be a sneaky pick if Betts actually was traded.  It'd be a risk in giving up young talent for a one-year push, but it might be something Beane and company feel is worth it given Betts' stature.  Plus, they could recoup one draft pick back via the QO when Betts left as a free agent.
7:13
I guess the x-factors would be a)if Boston actually wants to trade Betts at all, and b) if they'd be willing to trade him to a team they'll be in competition with for a wild card spot

What moves do you see the reds making
Mark P
7:14
Definitely adding a big bat or two --- at least one for the outfield, and likely the middle infield as well
Daniel B
7:17
What chances do you give the Braves in resigning Donaldson? They don’t normally spend big on free agents.
Mark P
7:18
I'd actually say there's a pretty decent chance, given the longtime connection between Donaldson and AA, plus the fact that Donaldson wouldn't be looking for *too* long a contract.  A three-year deal might be his ceiling given his age.
Joe Maddon

I’m in for HOF with my new bud Trout if I get to a World Series with the Angels right?
Mark P
7:20
My guess is yeah
Baltimore Baseball
7:20
How much longer will Trey Mancini be with the Orioles? He is the Orioles' biggest trade candidate(other than Jonathan Villar).
Mark P
7:21
The O's will listen to offers but aren't under any obligation to deal Mancini anytime soon.  If another team makes a very attractive offer, my guess is Mancini would be traded (or Trey-ded)
Mariner
7:22
Any hope for next year?  Big add candidate?
Mark P
7:22
Jerry Dipoto has said it'll be a relatively quiet offseason for the Mariners, though you never can tell with Trader Jerry.  I don't see them splurging on a big FA signing or anything until they're more certain about their young core in place
Winter Meeting
7:23
Any chance a cellar dweller reaches for the stars? Which team could pull off worst to first?  Padres maybe...
Mark P
7:24
I think it'd be the Padres by default.  Of all the last-place teams, I can at least see a scenario where San Diego is really good next year....much harder to see that happening for the Marlins, Pirates, Orioles, Tigers, or Mariners
Stan Lee the Manly
7:25
Would a deal involving Starling Marte to the Cardinals for Harrison Bader and a young pitcher or two have any legs? Cards need the offensive upgrade and Bader has a lot of control with some play-making defense and speed.
Mark P
7:26
Bader/young pitcher is a start, though I'm not sure the Bucs would be interested in moving Marte within the division
Mendoza line 215
7:27
Over under for the Pirates win total next year assuming they make no major changes.
Mark P
7:28
For the record, it would be a big mistake for the PIrates to just run things back with this same roster, especially in such a competitive division.

If it's basically the same Pirates team in 2020, I can't see them winning more than, say, 72 games
Adrian
7:28
Should the Jays take on a bad deal ( Myers, Price, Desmond, Hosmer) if tgey got enough prospect capital to do so
Mark P
7:29
Wouldn't be a bad strategy, given how little money Toronto has on the books in future years.
