MLBTR Chat With Mark Polishuk

Mark P
9:28
Hi everyone, welcome to the pre-Winter Meetings chat!
Tre
9:29
What do you see happening to Kris Bryant this week?
Mark P
9:29
I don't see a deal happening imminently, and at least not until we get word on Bryant's grievance hearing.  Obviously teams aren't going to be eager to work out a deal for Bryant until they know whether they'll have him for one season or two
Mark
9:31
Are the Rangers done if they get Rendon?
Mark P
9:31
I would imagine they'd still check around the pitching market for SPS and RPs.  Plus, you'd think Texas would also still be shopping one of their excess hitters from a crowded (if underachieving) lineup
Darryl strawberry
9:32
What would a package for Lindor look like if the cardinals decided to pursue a SS and move dejong to third base?
Mark P
9:33
Cleveland could definitely ask for Carlson and Gorman, while realistically knowing they would only wind up with one if STL did swing a trade.  But the Tribe would certainly want one of the Cards' big blue chip prospects, then more young talent and maybe even DeJong himself
The Sports Genius
9:34
When does Cole ink his Yankees deal?
DG
9:34
you see anyone beating Yankees reported offer of 7yrs/$235M on Cole?
Mark P
9:35
It's actually seven years/$245MM for Cole, reportedly.  It remains to be seen if this is a final offer, or if the Yankees are willing to go higher, or if teams like the Dodgers, Angels, etc. are willing to go even higher than that.
Dave
9:36
Whitaker got snubbed. Again.
Mark P
9:36
That was a bummer.  Miller and Simmons are excellent choices, and would've been on my four-person ballot had I been on the committee.  But Sweet Lou is also long overdue for the HOF
Tony
9:37
What’s the odds the Brewers trade Hader?  What teams are interested?
Mark P
9:39
I'd say the odds are still probably relatively low.  The original report (https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/brewers-willing-to-listen-on-jo...) only said Hader was "available," which is technically different than the Brewers actually shopping him --- any player is probably "available" if another team offers enough
Jacob Degrom
9:39
The Mets really aren’t gonna trade me are they?
Mark P
9:39
I seriously doubt the Mets would trade one of the game's best pitchers when they're trying to win ASAP
Nervous Sox Fan
9:40
Where do the White Sox go from here without Wheeler? I’m good with Keuchel, but I don’t trust Ryu or MadBum. They obviously desperately need solid starting pitching, any chance they are in at all on Cole/Strasburg? Any possibility of a trade?
Mark P
9:41
I don't think the Sox are shopping in the Cole/Stras district, and i wonder if they'd be in on any major Scott Boras client given the bad blood between Jerry Reinsdorf and Boras.

Seems like Chicago will definitely make a big play for one of that second tier of free agent starters, however, and then turn to trade possibilities if they strike out in free agency
Matt K
9:42
Any chance either Trevor Story or Nolan Arenado gets moved in the next couple months?
Mark P
9:43
Arenado I'd be very surprised.  Story....surprised but not shocked, since he makes a lot of sense as a trade chip for a Rockies team that might need to take a step back
Hugs
9:44
Marlins sign a corner OF and at least one RP? Avisail and Sergio Romo seem realistic?
Mark P
9:44
Seems like a fit on paper, though Romo might prefer to join a contender if possible
Os Fan
9:45
Is Trey Mancini as valuable as Os fans think? I haven’t bought into him like many
Mark P
9:46
He's a very good hitter, though he already seems like a 1B/DH guy, and teams are increasingly less willing to give up a bunch in a trade for anything less than elite 1B production
Braves
9:46
8/275 should wrap up Gerrit Cole from free agency yes?
Mark P
9:47
I would imagine that would beat any other bid.  Also, if you're suggesting the Braves will be the team who makes that bid, no chance
Ross Atkins
9:47
What would it take to get JameSon taillon from pirates
Mark P
9:48
Taillon will miss all of 2020 recovering from Tommy John surgery, though that technically doesn't hurt the Blue Jays' contention timeline since they're not planning to win this year anyway.  I'd imagine Pittsburgh would still want something notable for a pitcher with such a high ceiling, but they'd also be selling low
Nolan
9:49
Lerner: serious about only signing one of Rendon and Strasburg, or just a negotiating ploy?
Mark P
9:50
As I wrote in the post, the Nats "can" afford to re-sign both, and there's no reason they couldn't besides the luxury tax.  For a team who has crossed the tax threshold in the past, crossing it again shouldn't be such a huge obstacle.  My guess is it's something of a negotiating ploy, though I'm not sure how well that'll work since both players are getting a lot of attention
Erstad Grit
9:51
Please tell angels will get at least one of Cole, Stras, Ryu, or Madbum. They couldn't miss on everyone could they?
Mark P
9:51
Would missing those four but signing Dallas Keuchel be ok?
Padres
9:52
Over/under 85 wins
Mark P
9:52
My feeling is under.  They have a lot more moves to make, but I have some questions about the composition of this roster
JA
9:53
Twins sign Madbum this week?
Mark P
9:53
If I'm Bumgarner, I'm waiting to see if Cole or Strasburg leave the market first, since that might raise my price tag considerably
Wilt Chamberlain's cousin
9:54
If the Padres absorb half of Myers" contract, what's the best scenario and what team makes the most sense? Who could they get in return?
Mark P
9:56
Myers is owed $68.5MM over the next three seasons, counting the buyout of his 2023 option.  If he was a free agent right now, he certainly wouldn't get $34.25 over a three-year deal, so the Padres would have to eat more money to work out a trade
Doozey
9:57
Where do you see Betances ending up?
