MLBTR Front Office chat with Steve Adams: 8/19/22

I don't think the O's are gonna have too many open OF spots in the near future, as Mullins and Hays are both solid options there (even with Hays' recent struggles). Stowers still whiffs a fair bit in the minors, which is of some concern, but I do like that he's handled left-on-left settings fairly well in AAA and isn't just skating by against lefties with BABIP smoke and mirrors. He has a chance to be an everyday guy for the O's, yes, but I'd like to see him cut back on the punchouts.

Will the Braves release him now or this winter?
Steve Adams
3:06
I think they should, but I thought that was true last offseason as well. In addition to the off-field issues, he's also just been terrible at baseball for two years now.

Are there any interesting call ups when rosters (slightly) expand. Does Carroll in AZ come up Sept 1 or later? Then what does their OF look like?
Steve Adams

D-backs GM Mike Hazen said just yesterday that he thinks Carroll could be up in the Majors this year, so yeah, I think he's an interesting one.

Gunnar Henderson is another guy who could feasibly make his big league debut late this season. I think the Rangers will give Josh Jung a call next month.

AL East + Wildcard: any chance Rays/Jays catch the Yanks? Also who do you have making the playoffs in the AL
Steve Adams

Even with the Yankees' recent struggles, a nine-game lead is tough to overcome this time of year. Since you're asking if there's "any chance," sure, there might be a 5-10% chance they blow the lead in the East. The 2009 Tigers blew a 7-game lead on the AL Central in September alone
But it's likely that the Yankees hold on

My division winners: Yankees, Twins, Astros
Wild Cards: Mariners, Rays, Jays
Bellinger

Am I healthy. What is my future with the dodgers.
Steve Adams
3:13
I can't speak to Bellinger's health, but I have a hard time imagining the Dodgers want to pay him $20MM+ after probably feeling they didn't get their money's worth on this year's $17MM. Hard contact, barrels, walks are all down... strikeouts way up. I would lean toward a non-tender
3:14
Or a trade to a big-market contender with some risk tolerance and an OF need.

Phillies? Rangers?

Thanks, Steve, for doing this chat.  What is going on with Lucas Giolito?  Is he even worth retaining in a fantasy league (AL-only)?  His performance has left a lot to be desired all year, but the past month has been pathetic.

I wish I had a great answer for this, though if I definitively knew what was wrong, I imagine the White Sox would've thrown a lot of money at me by now, ha.

Giolito's velocity is down a tick, his swinging-strikes and out-of-zone chases are down. He's been hit harder in the zone. He's not missing nearly as many bats with his four-seamer or his slider, and it's all costing him.

I don't know whether there's an injury at play here, or whether this is mechanical or whether Giolito just has been crushed by the ban on SpiderTac or it's something completely unrelated, but it is odd and unusual to see a 28-year-old's stuff all just suddenly take a step back in unison.

How does draft pick compensation work with ROY?  If Adley finishes 2nd to Julio for ROY do the Os get an extra pick or does Adley get service time comps?  Or both?
Steve Adams
3:21
The 1st/2nd place finishers will get a year of service time. The Orioles, I believe, would get some extra funds in their international pool for him but not the comp pick because he didn't win and was "only" a runner-up. They can get future picks based on MVP voting in the next couple years.

Ok, I have to wrap this up for the week. There are still a handful of questions I couldn't get to, and for that I do apologize. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve and happy to take extra questions there, and you can always submit questions to Tim Dierkes' mailbag or to next week's chat (which I believe will be again hosted by Anthony).

I'd stick around longer but I have a screaming 8-month old who is waking up from a nap, haha, so I've got to scurry. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
