MLBTR Front Office Fantasy Baseball Chat with Brad Johnson: 7/26/22

Alrighty, we'll get going in a moment. Good to see you all again.
Brad
11:58
Any deeper league starting pitchers that could get more opportunity post deadline?
Brad Johnson
11:59
Honestly, there aren't many blocked starting pitchers right now. The minor league cupboards are bare too. DL Hall, maybe Joey Cantillo, a couple others. None of them particularly exciting for 2022.
There will be matchup opportunities. Especially for weaker pitchers facing the Athletics or Nationals.
12:00
Maybe some guys who are flirting with reliever futures like Garrett Whitlock can sneak back into the rotation.
12:01
Not sure the Red Sox are brazen enough to sell, even with their current slump. My sense is they'd prefer to be middling and maybe get lucky than risk the fans getting mad about a preemptive teardown. But they do have a lot of expiring contracts that could be turned into long term pieces.

Jake Junis or Sean Manera ROY.
Thank You
Brad Johnson
12:03
Manaea is more talented, but he seems to be in one of his slumps right now. He's been hot and cold most of his career. I'd still prefer him to Junis whose success I don't view as sustainable.
12:04
Interestingly, Junis' velocity was ticking up prior to his injury, and he seems to have returned with most of the newfound zip. Something to watch.
12:05
Maybe a case could be made for Junis after all. The percentage play is Manaea though.

12:05
Should I sell now on Tony Gonsolin?
Brad Johnson
12:06
It's not a bad idea. He's approaching the career-high in innings he set back in 2018.
I do think the hit-prevention skills are real and sustainable.
Even if a .202 BABIP is overstating it.
12:07
He now has a .232 BABIP in 242 innings which is hard to fake. He's probably around a .250 BABIP guy at worst.
12:08
What's weird to me is he's a neutral pitcher (neither GB or FB heavy), and such pitchers often fall apart. They usually run elevated BABIPs, but Gonsolin seems to have the talent for avoiding hard contact.
There's more to unpack here, but maybe not in a chat.
Reds for life
12:09
Hi, Brad, thanks so much for sharing your insight in the midst of both of my fantasy teams sucking wind this season! What 2022 draft pick is the first one to make a big league roster, in your opinion? Thank you!
Brad Johnson
12:09
Interesting question. Do you mean in a fantasy-impactful way?
12:11
Maybe I'm missing somebody from the second or third round, but I think the obvious answer is Kumar Rocker.
The Rangers debuted Leiter at Double-A and may do the same with Rocker who I've always liked more than Leiter anyway.
From there, it's just a short jump to the Majors, assuming he doesn't stumble as Leiter has.

I was offered Shane Baz for Kelenic in a keeper league. I already have Espino and Taj Bradley. Yet Baz, despite his elbow issues may be too good to pass up in this trade.  Your thoughts?
Brad Johnson
12:12
I really don't have any insight into how to value Kelenic. I'm lost. I know I'd be willing to buy low if that opportunity came along, and I know "buy low" means a lot less than Baz to me. So in that sense, it passes muster.
12:13
That said, there's such a large chance Baz misses multiple years sometime in the near future.
12:14
What's your instinct on this. Where do you think your roster needs to spike future value, pitcher or outfield?
You can let your needs guide you here or even push the other manager to another player with a little less talent and risk than Baz.
12:15
I also don't think pressing accept is "wrong" if you find yourself preferring Baz.
I know that's really soft and mushy advice, but it's basically a max-uncertainty swap of supposed-to-be-good players.

12:16
Gonna have to drop 1 when Degrom comes back. 12 team, QS instead of Wins. Luis Garcia or Clevinger
Brad Johnson
12:16
I think I'd drop Clevinger. But... that feels like a situation you should be able to trade around.
12:17
In 12-team, neither of those guys are remotely close to waiver fodder. So do like Garcia and Brandon Lowe for Jose Altuve. Some kind of 2-for-1 of that nature.

What do you think about Ashby going ahead?
Brad Johnson
12:18
It's basically my favorite pitching profile so in that sense I'm bullish. Vaguely Framber Valdez starter pack.
More whiffs, and honestly his command is better than I expected.
Not good, just not terrible
12:19
Just a heads up, my wifi is dropping in and out for some reason. Never does this.
So if I go quiet for awhile, that's why.
Back to Ashby, looks like the Brewers will let him face 25 batters when he's on which is all you can hope for from a young starter these days.

How long a leash does Akil Baddoo have? He seems to be the second coming of Jarred Kelenic and Spencer Torkelson: Tearing it up in the minors, striking out in the majors.
