Mark P
9:21
Since we missed last weekend's chat, this weekend gets a chat on both Saturday AND Sunday night.  Go crazy, folks!  Go crazy!
Erik Neander
9:22
if I’m not a contender by trade deadline do i consider selling Glasnow?
Mark P
9:24
You probably can't rule out the Rays trading anyone whether they're in contention or not, but they'd have to be pretty far back before Glasnow becomes a truly prime trade chip.  He's controlled for two more seasons and is only making $4MM (reasonable even for Tampa) this year
Ross Atkins
9:25
How am i not looking for SP or RP? Procello? Greene?
Mark P
9:26
I would imagine that if a pitching-needy team like the Jays (who were "in on everyone") went the entire winter without even a rumor about interest in Porcello and Greene, then they simply didn't have interest.
Obviously there's a bit more of a need for pitching given Toronto's injuries, but there's no point in signing a guy just to be a warm body if you don't think he'll contribute
Mac
9:27
Would much rather sign Haniger to a likely reasonable extension and see how the young guys perform than trade him. Thoughts?
Mark P
9:27
This is the second chat in a row that has suggested a Haniger extension, and it makes some sense.  The M's do have the luxury of a DH spot to give everyone at-bats, and the team doesn't actually know yet if Rodriguez or Kelenic will be good big league players.
9:28
Takes two to tango, of course, but like I said last night, Haniger might be more keen to lock in some guaranteed money and security in the wake of all his injuries in 2019-20
Overbearing Padre
9:29
Pads appear to have great pitching but need another bat. Pham has been a nightmare. Who's the best bat available at the deadline?
Mark P
9:30
Of the teams we know will be sellers, Anthony Santander leaps to mind.
9:31
But potentially a lot of bigger hitters could be available if their teams are out of the race.  If the Cubs aren't contending, Bryant or even Rizzo will get a lot of calls, for instance
Plus the Rockies' bats, though I'm not sure if they'd trade within the division
Avmal
9:32
It Aaron Boone in trouble?
Mark P
9:33
If the Yankees actually end up with a losing record, I suspect Boone will be fired.  But it's also still very early.
Alex Anthopoulus
9:33
Should I be worried about the Braves slow start?
Mark P
9:34
Again, still very early.

I reserve the right to change this opinion if Acuna is out for an extended amount of time
Tony/CGN
9:34
Dave Dombrowski gets a lot of hate in Boston for "destroying the farm".  Yet really...  which of his trades would one "take back" if given the chance?  Yes, he emphasized winning at the major league level,  but that is what he was asked to do.  I'd rate his tenure in Boston as a success.  What say you?
Mark P
9:35
Dombrowski's four seasons saw the team make the playoffs three times and win the World Series once.  It was an unqualified success, yet by the "what have you done for me lately?" standards of Red Sox ownership, somehow not enough
Mr. Marlin
9:37
What do you think of the marlins so far? I know its early but do you think they can sustain it?
Mark P
9:38
Marte missing time with what looks like an oblique injury won't help, that's for certain.  Again, it's still very early in the season, but I wouldn't be surprised if Miami can float around the .500 mark.  There is some real talent on this roster.  Whether they can actually contend for the playoffs again, I'm doubtful
The North
9:39
When is Springer gonna play?
Mark P
9:39
Montoyo hinted that next weekend is a possibility, when the Jays play the Rays
Fred McGriff's Best Friend
9:40
Why isn't Fred McGriff in the HOF? Asking for a friend.
Mark P
9:41
He was hurt by the crowded HOF ballot, and his numbers were more the quietly consistently kind of awesome, rather than having one signature 50-homer year or something.

If I'd had a ballot, McGriff would have an easy check for me every single year.
Midwest Friar
9:42
Would a trade centered around Reggie Lawson or Mason Thompson be enough to get Kris Bryant from the Cubs?
Mark P
9:44
Lawson and Thompson check in at #8 and #11 in the Padres farm system, as per MLB Pipeline.  Either would fit the model of the "good, but non-elite" prospect the Padres prefer to move in deals (Patino notwithstanding), though I'm not sure if either would work as a headliner, even for a rental like Bryant.  After the Darvish trade, Chicago fans wouldn't be pleased with another star being moved to San Diego for an average-ish return
Killer B’s
9:45
Which one of the B’s should the Cubs deal?  Baez?  Bryant?
Mark P
9:46
I'm not sure if teams are exactly lining up to trade for Baez at this point, he might be a tough sell for the Cubs.

9:47
Do you believe Andrew Benintendi is in a downward spiral he can’t out of partial based on alarming statcast numbers centers
Mark P
9:47
Very rough go of it for Benintendi so far.  He was a guy I had tapped as a possible bounce-back candidate due to a change of scenery, but his issues at the plate may run deeper than that.
Rick
9:48
Why doesn’t Tim Anderson get the same attention as the other top shortstops? The guy can hit, solid fielder, and seems to be a strong leader.....
Mark P
9:49
I think a lot of it simply had to do with the fact that the White Sox hadn't been very good until last season.  Seager, Correa, Lindor, Bogaerts all played on perennial playoff teams....even the Rockies made the playoffs a couple of times with Story
Jay B
9:50
Our hats are tipped.   Should Boone have at least played Jay B for one last game?   Bad omen.
Mark P
9:51
That was pretty surprising to me.  It's not like Bruce had been hitting well, and the Yankees were trying to win a big division game, but you'd think the team might have given him one final pinch-hit appearance or something.
Angel Fan
9:52
What are are chances in this Western Division...where do you see us at year end..
Mark P
9:52
They were my pick to win the AL West, and I'll stand by that until the inevitable flood of pitching injuries
Confused Giants Fan
9:55
Are we actually that good? I can understand starters finding their stuff again but I’m worried it’s unsustainable.
Mark P
9:55
The Giants have quietly kept building and finding quality talent, so I don't consider them a major surprise (maybe a minor surprise).
The Boys
9:56
Are you excited for season 3 of The Boys? Have you watched any of the new Marvel Series?
