Not that Means wouldn't be a prime trade chip, of course

Can the Mets weather the sorm of injuries?
Mark P
9:58
"Can they weather the storm of injuries" is a question that could be applied to seemingly half the league right now.

Can Ohtani win MVP?
Mark P
10:00
If he keeps hitting and pitching like this, he'll definitely get some votes.  Ohtani might be hurt by the fact that a) Trout will get more votes and is probably a more deserving candidate, and b) the Angels don't seem to be playoff candidates, once again

Mark!  Have you seen a baseball game in person this year?  Thanks for these awesome chats!
Mark P
10:02
Thanks for participating!

I haven't seen a ballgame in person since September 2019, and man, do I ever miss being at the park.

Back to Openers, has there ever been a game where both teams used an opener?
Mark P
10:02
I can't think of a specific game off the top of my head, but I would imagine there has definitely been several such games.

What’s one baseball movie you wish you could have been an extra in?
Mark P
10:04
Does the guy who yelled "Hey, it's Enrico Palazzo!" count as an extra?  I'm not sure it counts as background work if you get the funniest line in a very funny movie.

What did the teams do with their cutout fans in the stands from last year? Throw them out or sell for charity with  player autograph on them? The later seems like a good call.
Mark P
10:06
That's a good question, it might have differed from team to team.

Watching the Jays games in Dunedin, I enjoy the cutout "celebrity fan" section that includes the likes of Ryan Reynolds and the Schitt's Creek cast
Joe Maddon
10:06
How can the team with no money (Tampa) have all the pitching. And a team like (Anaheim) has no pitching and all the money.
Mark P
10:07
It would delight me to no end if this was the actual Joe Maddon asking this question.

It all comes down to development.  The Rays have a great farm system and pipeline, and the Angels seemingly don't.

Should the brewers make a big push for Colorado Rockies SS Trevor Story to help the brewers struggling offense at SS and 1B
Mark P
10:09
Story would definitely be a big help to the Brewers, and that kind of splashy acquisition isn't totally out of the team's purview (especially since it'd be just a short-term add).  It's a credit to Milwaukee that they've hung in there despite all the injuries.

Winning is not a money thing, huh?
Mark P
10:11
I mean, it certainly helps.  As good as a team like the Rays have been in recent years, they likely would've been even better if they hadn't felt obliged to trade so many good players whenever those players get even kind of expensive.

Obligatory Adell trade question
Mark P
10:11
Adell is off to nice start at Triple-A so far, maybe the questions should be about when he'll get called up

I didn't think Ha-Seong was a good fit for SD, but do you think his struggles are a fluke and he eventually becomes a star in the MLB? It is a different league than the KBO.
Mark P
10:13
Not even 100 PA yet, and Kim hasn't even been playing every day, so he hasn't had much chance to get into a rhythm.  Way too soon to pass judgement.

The Jays are for real, right? Half the team (and counting) is on the IL, they haven't even played at their "real" home, they've had one of the toughest schedules to date, and yet have clawed their way to 5 over .500.
Mark P
10:14
As a Jays fan, I am cautiously optimistic about the team thus far.  A lot of things have gone wrong, yet here they are with a very solid record.
Replay Suxs
10:15
What is the point of replay if they can't get a call right? A's got lucky to win after today's blunder...
Mark P
10:16
MLB really needs to overhaul the replay rules.  I think there's been enough public criticism from players and teams by this point that changing the replay system (not abandoning it, just changing it) should be a priority heading into 2022.

Changing the rules partway through this season might open another can of worms, since then some teams might feel (rightly) that they were ripped off by earlier calls or non-calls
Jazz Band
10:17
Jazz Chisholm NL stolen base leader, realistic possibility?
Mark P
10:18
I certainly think so. He's still near the top of the MLB list and that's after missing a bunch of time on the IL
Bearded Texas Hulk

Does Kingery have any trade value?
Mark P
10:19
It's Scott Kingery question day here in the chat!

I'd say so, sure.  Wasn't long ago that he was a very valued prospect.  Going with my earlier criticism of how the Phillies have handled Kingery, he strikes me as a guy who'd benefit from a change of scenery.

What would it cost to get Ryan Pressly from Houston if you were the Dodgers?
Mark P
10:21
I doubt the Astros will be trading Pressly, he's a big part of their bullpen

Scherzer to the cardinals at the deadline? Would love to see max play in his hometown.
Mark P
10:24
Sorry to be a buzzkill with all the "it's still early" answers, but the Nationals still have lots of time to get back into contention.  Nobody is running away with the NL East by any means.
10:25
If they did sell, sure, I'd imagine the Cards would definitely check in on Scherzer.  Keep in mind that Scherzer will have control over his next destination since he has 10-and-5 no-trade rights, so if he particularly wanted to return home, he would have leverage

10:25
Will the Giants make a big midseason trade to add or subtract?
Mark P
10:27
I think they look like buyers at this point.  Keep in mind they went both the buy-and-sell route in 2019, when the team was in a much earlier stage of the rebuild and when they had something of a longer-shot chance at the playoffs.

That indicates to me that if the Giants are clear-cut contenders, they'll definitely look to buy.  And with all their future payroll space, they could buy big, maybe in the form of absorbing a big contract from a team looking to dump salary
Hanley Ramirez
10:29
Is MIA trying to build their team like TB? They have solid talent depth in pitching but need to improve offense; Is a trade for Story as a rental possible? would be a  BOLD move. They have good prospects to interest COL
Mark P
10:31
The Starling Marte trade last year indicates that the Marlins aren't unwilling to make a big deadline move.  Not sure a middle infielder like Story is necessary the need since Rojas is playing well and Miami has to be hoping that Jazz keeps it up.

To accommodate a Story trade, maybe Rojas is moved to 3B if Anderson keeps struggling.  But if that's the situation, the Marlins could be likelier to just obtain a proper third baseman.
