Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!  Special mention to my father, who (among his many excellent contributions to my life) is the chief reason behind my lifelong love of baseball.
Chris Sale
10:18
When am I coming back and what will be my role?
Mark P
10:20
If Sale is able, he'll certainly be used as a regular starting pitcher.  If there are some limitations on his arm, I can see the Sox maybe trying some kind of piggyback situation rather than a relief role, since being a reliever (and having to prep for every game) doesn't necessarily make for less stress on Sale's arm

AA has to be wondering why Gausman and Smyly can be so good for the Giants and not the Braves right?
Mark P
10:22
In fairness, the Braves have also had their share of guys suddenly emerge or bounce back from disappointing seasons after arriving in the ATL.

Giants fans should be very pleased by how their front office and coaching staff seem to be able to find these rather unheralded players and get them on the right track.

What do you think of the City connection jerseys ?
Mark P
10:23
Some of them (specifically the Marlins and White Sox jerseys) look absolutely incredible

The DBacks don’t seem this bad on paper but this is their second straight miserable season. At what point is it time to throw in the towel and start the rebuild?
Mark P
10:26
Almost everything has gone wrong for the D'Backs over the last two years, and I agree, they shouldn't be *this* bad.  But it's a combination of bad luck and playing in a division with now three excellent teams.

GM Mike Hazen recently said that they aren't planning an outright teardown, hinting that their plan is to retrench around a few core guys and try to be better in 2022.  To this point, I doubt you'll see players like Marte, Kelly, or Gallen dealt at the deadline, but any of the veterans or anyone on a shorter-term deal is a trade chip

10:26
how long does a player remain in DFA limbo?  Any news on Ramos and Sisco?
Mark P
10:27
The DFA period lasts for seven days.  And no word yet on either player.
Dennis
10:28
Didn’t appear my message went through.  Curious your thoughts on Lindor trade at this point.  Looks like Tribe did ok to this point.  The fear of the universe falling apart seems less likely. Rosario is a hustler.
Mark P
10:29
Cleveland fans should take solace in the fact that they don't usually "lose" big trades of veteran talent.  Not that Lindor won't still be excellent for the Mets, but the Tribe picked up a nice package of talent in return

With the Nats showing some signs of life, do you think they could be in the market for a bat-first infielder come July? If so, who’s a realistic target for them?
Mark P
10:32
Old friend Asdrubal Cabrera immediately comes to mind.  If the Nats wanted to go bigger, Adam Frazier is the player that'll get a ton of attention from lots of teams, but the Nats have generally taken a more measured approach to the 2021 season in order to give themselves more flexibility for 2022
Rob Schneider as a Stapler
10:32
Thanks for the cool chats.  Do you think we'll see guys like Vidal Brujan and Jarren Duran debut soon?
Mark P
10:33
Brujan will probably be in the majors by the All-Star break or the trade deadline at the latest.  The current thinking on Duran is that he won't debut until after the Olympics, though the Red Sox won't hesitate to call him up and keep him out of the Games if a need arises

10:34
Any word on if the White Sox will be adding someone for 2B or OF with the rash of injuries on the South Side?
Mark P
10:35
Since I just mentioned Adam Frazier, he is a player that would fit the ChiSox like a glove.  Given how aggressive the team has been in putting this contender together, I can see them meeting what is surely a big asking price from Pittsburgh
Michael Kay
10:36
It looks like the Bombers chances of staying under the cap are back at the wall and GONE! What job-preserving trade could you see Cashman try to pull this July?

10:36
Would the yankees actually stand put and make no moves at the deadline ? cashman has done it before when we were literally a piece away ?
Mark P
10:38
I don't see the Yankees doing nothing at all, but they aren't going over the luxury tax threshold.  I'd be shocked if they did.  Cashman has said the team is open to the idea of going over the limit but I suspect that's just because the NY media would go ballistic if he outright admitted to a spending limit
Dipoto
10:39
One game above .500 in a tough division, are we buyers or sellers at the deadline?
Mark P
10:40
(Jerry Dipoto = Mariners GM)

I can see both.  Even if the Mariners might not consider themselves realistic contenders in 2021, they'll want to be on the way up next year.

Wheeler for Gorman(3B) and Liberatore(LHP).
Mark P
10:41
Even if the Phils do end up being deadline sellers, they're not going to go to the extremes of moving someone like Wheeler
Degrominator
10:41
Since I keep getting these annoying little injuries, would it be in my best interest to take a week off and come back fresh?
Mark P
10:41
In theory, that's what that two-week IL stint in May was supposed to take care of.

Why do some organizations excel at developing players and others don’t do very well? I’m sure money plays a large role but it can’t be the sole factor.
Mark P
10:45
Money is a factor, though hardly the chief one, given that some of the lower-revenue teams (i.e. Cleveland, Tampa, Miami) have all excelled at developing players.

There's no one easy answer, but in general, teams with strong player development systems often talk about "continuity" at every level of the organization.  Every prospect has an overall plan that is followed at every level, so the Triple-A hitting coach isn't telling a prospect to do something that the Double-A hitting coach warned him against, for instance.  Adjustments to that player's plan are made on an organizational level, rather than by a particular coach or manager

The crackdown on sticky stuff begins in earnest tomorrow. How many pitchers do you anticipate will be removed from games over the first 10 days of enforcement?
Mark P
10:48
Teams are already undoubtedly taking steps to wean pitchers off of "the sticky stuff," but someone will surely still get caught.  I'd say....let's see, two pitchers in the first 10 days
Conner
10:49
Are the Padres looking for outfielders this trade season? With Pham being streaky, Grisham still not getting back to 100 yet, and Myers being hot the first 15 games and falling off since? Does someone like Jesse winker make sense for the Padres go out and try to snag?
Mark P
10:51
I strongly doubt the Reds would move Winker, if the Reds ended up being sellers whatsoever.  But SD will look to see outfield help in some form, certainly.
10:52
One factor that might impact the Padres, Giants, and Dodgers......whether the D'Backs and Rockies are comfortable moving a notable player to a divisional rival.  It'll hamper the Big Three's trade efforts if two of the more obvious deadline sellers have reservations about dealing with them
10:53
To this point, I suspect the D'Backs would have less reservations about inter-division trades.  The Rockies....who knows, they go their own way on a lot of things.

What’s the best toppings for a ballpark hot dog?
Mark P
10:54
I'm pretty basic with my hot dog toppings, I stick with the tried-and-true formula of mustard and ketchup.  Maybe relish, but I'm 50-50 on most kinds of relish.
10:58
Had to pause the chat for a moment for a post....the Nats have selected Gerardo Parra.  Cue the 'Baby Shark' song!

The Brewers need offense, what would it take to pry Jesus Aguilar from Miami?
