It would be fun to see the Brewers try to recreate the old Aguilar magic, but it seemed like he was in need of a change of scenery when the Brew Crew dealt him  two years ago.  He has rebounded nicely since, but the Brewers might prefer to go another way

Morning Mark.  I'm guessing my A's will be buying relief pitching come late July.  Personally I'd be trying to swing a deal for Mad Max - but any ideas who we might be eyeing to manage the workloads of Petit, Diekman & Trivino?
Mark P
11:02
It's difficult to project specific bullpen targets since there are so many of them on the market.  Oakland is very likely to obtain someone (or maybe more than just one pitcher) for the pen, but there will be at least a couple dozen trade options out there.
Ohtani Autoparts
11:02
How dope is the Shohei Ohtani show this year!?
Mark P
11:03
He is pretty awesome.  This is exactly what fans, the Angels, and MLB as a whole was hoping for when he first came over to North America, and after a couple of stalled years, the hype has been met

Thoughts on the Nats trading Schwarber to the Yankees - Seems like a great fit
Mark P
11:05
Um, excuse me, didn't you hear about Parra returning to the Nats?  Here comes the patented midseason D.C. turnaround....2019 redux!
Jon
11:05
What kind of trade chip is Ryan Weathers and what does sending him down to AAA do to help?
Mark P
11:07
I'd be surprised to see Weathers dealt, I think the Padres see him as the first line of defense against another rotation injury.

If there's one lower-level add the Padres might before the deadline, it's adding an innings-eating veteran type for Triple-A depth.  They're lacking in experienced starters in the minors
Nolan Gorman
11:08
Will I still be a Cardinal after the trade deadline?
Mark P
11:09
I think so.  I have some question as to whether or not the Cards will even be buyers at all at the deadline
RandyW
11:09
Why are the Jays being so slow on getting relief help . Their situation is pretty bad .
Mark P
11:11
Other teams are also aware of how badly the Jays pen has been performing, and thus are putting a bigger price tag on their relievers when the Jays come calling.

Do you think the Brewers might have to look at a Managerial change? Counsell's message apparently isn't enough to motivate this team or teams the past couple years?
Mark P
11:13
....huh?  The Brewers, who have made the playoffs three years running and are perennial overachievers?

Counsell seems to me like one of the managers with the most job security in the sport

11:13
What are the chances of the Rangers trading Garcia and Gallo before the deadline?
Mark P
11:15
Garcia's probably an unlikely trade chip.  The Rangers have him under control through 2026 and the guy is found money at this point, so why not keep him and see if he's really legit?  Garcia is only 28, so not old enough that he couldn't be part of the next Texas contender if he really is a late bloomer.

Gallo has been part of trade rumors for a while now, and I think there's a decent chance (say, 45% chance?) he is playing for another team by August 1
Ny Mets
11:18
What will the Mets do about getting real 3rd baseman and a starting pitcher?
Mark P
11:20
Well, they just selected Jerad Eickhoff's contract, hence the delay in the chat just now.  Rotation depth problem solved!

McNeil is back tomorrow and JD Davis will be back at some point, so the Mets' infield issues will start to correct themselves.  Besides, it's not like Villar has been bad or anything, he's been quite solid
Alek
11:24
What has been the most surprising story thus far in the season?
Mark P
11:25
I'm not sure if it counts as "surprising," necessarily, since it's been an open secret around the game for years.  But I think a lot of fans were surprised to learn just how widespread the use of illegal substances for ball-doctoring purposes was, and this rule crackdown dovetails into a lot of other larger issues surrounding the game
Tiger Fan
11:26
Is Akil Baddoo legit? He's batting .260+ with patient at-bats and an .820+ OPS after almost 40 games played... when do we buy in that he's a talented, mature hitter and dark horse AL ROY behind Arozerena?
Mark P
11:27
He is more than holding his own at the MLB level, which is impressive for a guy who had never played above high-A before this season.  Baddoo does have particularly gigantic righty/lefty splits, but overall, he has looked like a quality player
Cubs
11:28
No chance of winning WS this year?  Do the right thing and sell, sell, sell. Thoughts?
Mark P
11:28
As long as you get into the playoffs, you have a chance.  Plus, if this really is the "last ride" for this core group of Cubs stars, the front office should be pushing to capitalize
Poor Little Pinkus
11:29
What is your take on Caleb Smith?  He kind of disappeared, and now he appears to have righted himself.
Mark P
11:30
He plays for the 2021 Diamondbacks, so something was bound to go wrong for Smith this year.
Matt
11:31
Do GMs suffer from seeing their team with rose colored glasses? You can’t convince me the d-backs GM seriously thinks ketel marte will be a part of their next winner. They’re historically bad and in a division with 3 really well run teams with money and amazing player development. So instead of trading marte while his value is as high as it’ll ever be, they’ll hold onto him and get significantly less when he inevitably gets traded 3 years from now.
Mark P
11:32
Just because Marte isn't likely to be dealt by the deadline doesn't mean that he couldn't be dealt by, say, this offseason rather than in 2023 or something.

I'd imagine there's a real stunned feeling within Arizona's front office right now, since the team has been unfathomably bad.  It isn't the right time to decide to blow everything up in the next six weeks....those larger-scale conversations will happen after the season.
Rise of the Expos
11:33
So how come MLB doesn’t entertain having 2 expansion teams. It would add $4 billion to the owners pocket books. It would add more fans to the sport. If baseball is worried it would lose two potential markets the Rays and A’s could move to, there is like 5 potential new homes with Charlotte, Montreal, Nashville, Portland and Vegas. It should be done now
Mark P
11:34
The league has been pretty adamant that expansion isn't on the table until the A's/Rays situations have been resolved.  MLB doesn't want to decrease those teams' leverage by removing two potential cities as move possibilities.
Matt
11:38
Is there more a case of "What If?" than Grady Sizemore?  He could have been legendary.
Mark P
11:38
Even for Cleveland alone, Herb Score is a major what-if.  But you're right in that Sizemore looked like a special talent before injuries ruined his career.
Clever name
11:39
What’s the latest on David Dahl? He could be a decent trade piece if healthy.
Mark P
11:40
"if healthy" is the key word there, since injuries have been such a detriment to Dahl's career.  He just started a rehab assignment this weekend, so he should be back with the Rangers before too long

Joe Adell for Tyler Freeman?   Who says no?
Mark P
11:44
Ah, Jo Adell trade questions.  How I've missed you!

Freeman is a nice prospect, but Adell's ceiling is considerable higher.
