I am running the risk of cutting this chat short at a moment's notice to report on a breaking story, but that's the fun of chats during trade deadline season!  Let's get to some questions....
Dipoto
10:26
What do I have to give up to get Whit. Trammell and 2 top 20-30 prospects?
Mark P
10:28
(Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto)

Much higher.  Trammell has already been dealt a couple of times, and while his stock is still high, is isn't high enough to be the centerpiece of a Merrifield trade

Anything new on the padres front?
Mark P
10:28
....you mean beyond Adam Frazier, already?
Breaking news
10:29
Are you hearing chatter that something is imminent?
Mark P
10:30
Nothing IMMINENT, but you never know when something might break this time of year.  It's still early evening out on the west coast, where some of baseball's most aggressive GMs are located!

More realistic for the Mets to go for rentals or guys with more control? And who is untouchable in their system?
Mark P
10:32
I'd be pretty surprised if any of the big prospects (Mauricio, Allan, Alvarez, Baty) are moved, just because Alderson and company have talked so much about keeping the pipeline strong.  I could only see any of that group moved if the Mets were to land someone with more control than just 2022.

Beyond those prospects, however, the Mets might be pretty aggressive

Trea Turner mentioned as a possibility to be traded as contract extension talks haven't gone well.  How much of a return would be required to get him now?
Mark P
10:34
I'd be quite surprised to see Turner go, actually.  He is controlled into 2022, so the Nats are under no real rush to move him now....they could deal him during the offseason if need be, though they'd be competing with all of the free agent shortstops
10:35
The Nats built their roster with a lot of one-year contracts, seemingly designing a fallback option of moving those guys at the deadline in the event of a selloff.  They'll move that bunch first before taking the much bigger step of trading someone like Turner.  Don't forget, the Nationals want to contend next year
Chat Time
10:35
10:25 EST is a bit late to start a chat. Can they start earlier please?
Mark P
10:36
Tonight's chat was pushed back a bit due to the Frazier trade, usually things get started at least a couple of hours earlier.

Consider this one a make-up for those times when I've had a chat at something like 10 or 11 AM Eastern, so fans on the west coast might've still been asleep

Initial thoughts on the Frazier trade?
Mark P
10:39
It seems like the Pirates really loved Marcano, to the point that they even kicked money into the deal to land him.  That counts as a win for the Padres, since they once again didn't have to move any of the true top-tier guys in their system.

That being said, Marcano was pretty highly regarded.  A 5-10 guy in the Padres system is like being a top-five type in many other systems, so it's not like Pittsburgh is out to lunch or anything.
Marlins
10:39
Starling Marte for Joey Bart who says no?
Mark P
10:39
The Giants aren't moving Bart for a rental player
Fred
10:40
Do the Mets have a big move left in them or will they just go for inning eaters like rich hill?
Mark P
10:40
Rich Hill's injury history kind of makes him the opposite of an innings-eater.  And, don't forget, Hill has been a very good pitcher when healthy, so it's not like he's exactly just roster filler.

10:41
Any chance Rizzo packages Hudson and Hand to increase return?
Mark P
10:41
(Rizzo = Nationals GM)

Quite possible, definitely

I heard that jays are tied to gallo. Would the rangers be interrsted in grichuck if the jays also offered a higher ranked prospect?
Mark P
10:43
Maybe, though I suspect that the Rangers will get (or are getting) Gallo offers good enough that they don't have to settle for scenarios that would see them take on money, like the rest of Grichuk's contract.

How many hours of sleep do you think you'll get between now and Friday afternoon?
Mark P
10:44
Fortunately, I'm not the only person who works on this site
Hahn, rick
10:45
Burger, Rutherford, Steiver for Whit? Close to getting it done?
Mark P
10:45
Nope, since if KC did move Merrifield, they're not trading him in the division
Edmank
10:46
Will/should the Yankees go all in on this season?
Mark P
10:47
If "all in" means dealing a bunch of top prospects and really loading up at the deadline....no.  They're eight games back of second place, so making such a push for (at best) a wild card berth doesn't seem logical.

That said, the Yankees do seem in need of a roster overhaul, which I suspect will come this winter once they've reset their luxury tax clock

10:48
Would be a mistake for Mariners to give up any of their top 6 prospects for Whit.
Mark P
10:49
Maybe, but they'll have to.  Merrifield is a very valuable player, and the Royals aren't wrong to be asking for a ton back

10:49
Are you surprised by the Giants being the best team in baseball ?
Mark P
10:49
I am.  I figured they'd be good this year, but not THIS good

What’s worse, stepping on a lego or today’s loss?
Mark P
10:50
I'd say today's loss, but I'm not a parent.

Do the Jays actually dip into their deep farm for a shot to lose the wildcard game to the Rays in the Trop?
Mark P
10:53
The Jays will do something, just because if they can ever get their bullpen on track, a 2015-esque run might not be out of the cards.  Plus, you figure the team might want to really mark its return to Toronto and provide some extra pennant race excitement for the home fans.

That said, 2015 was an outlier for a lot of reasons.  Anthopoulos was making moves either in an attempt to save his job or (maybe more likely) because he knew he was leaving anyway and wanted to go out in a blaze of glory.  This front office isn't under nearly that kind of pressure, so they're not going to go all-in for any massive win-now type of moves

Please tell me my white Sox gonna get somebody ?
Mark P

You'll get Eloy Jimenez back tomorrow!  That's not too shabby!
