In the words of Lazlo Holmes from SNL, let's do that baseball chat!
Cleveland 4 Life
8:14
With the rule 5 draft being a big problem for Cleveland, who could you see them DFA’ing to make room in the offseason??
Mark P
8:15
Does losing the team name count?

Looking at Cleveland's list of arb-eligible players, Hedges and maybe Wittgren stand out as possible non-tenders.  There was an interesting piece from Ryan Lewis this week speculating that Amed Rosario's hot month might have turned him into a sell-high trade candidate, which would be an interesting pivot for the team

What would the Angels have to part with, to get someone take Uptons Contract?  plus get him to waive no trade clause...  If So could the afford Max and one of the top SS?
Mark P
8:17
The one remaining year of Upton's deal shouldn't be an obstacle to making big free signings.  The no-trade clause is the biggest hurdle to clear, since the Angels could probably find a suitor to take Upton in exchange for another onerous contract.
8:18
But like I said, Upton being on the books for one more season shouldn't stop the Angels from biting the bullet and daring to go over the tax threshold to add some premium talent

Can the Cardinals afford to sign Max Scherzer?
Mark P
8:22
As per Roster Resource, the Cards have around $91MM on the books for next season.  So the answer is technically yes, even if they have to re-sign Wainwright and pay arb raises to Flaherty, Reyes, O'Neill, Bader, etc.  The Cards are another team that doesn't really go near the luxury threshold but it isn't (or shouldn't be) out of the question for them.
Carpenter, Miller, and Martinez all coming off the books frees up a big chunk of money for STL

What big names do you see the Mariners pursuing this off-season?
Mark P
8:24
The sky is really the limit, as MLBTR's Anthony Franco wrote earlier this week: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/09/mariners-are-in-position-to-be-...

Jerry Dipoto has relied more on trades than free agents during his Seattle tenure, so he might use that to his advantage -- i.e. absorbing a big contract in a deal for minor prospects rather than signing a free agent.  (No, Mets fans, he wouldn't be interested in taking Robbie Cano back.)  But by and large, free agency would be the easiest way for the M's to augment their young group with some ready-to-win veterans
Chaim Bloom
8:24
Can everyone just admit they were wrong to criticize me for getting Schwarber instead of Rizzo?
Mark P
8:26
(Bloom = Red Sox chief baseball officer)

It was really just a perfect storm of bad circumstance, with the Sox almost immediately hitting a cold spell after the deadline and the Yankees immediately took off.  People seemed to forget that Schwarber was just about the hottest player in baseball in June.

Do you think MLB ends up with a $100m salary cap floor or something close?
Mark P
8:27
Not if it means a $180MM luxury tax threshold.  The players aren't going for that whatsoever.
World Cup Qualifying
8:28
USA vs Canada. Who you got?
Mark P
8:28
Davies notwithstanding, I would be shocked if Canada made the World Cup.

Will Cody Bellinger get non-tendered? From his MVP season, his K rate has doubled and his BB rate has been almost cut in half. He was bad last year, he's way worse this year. And he'll cost 20M with only 2 years of arb left. Seems Freeman could put Muncy at 1st, Lux at 2nd, Turner at SS, and use the Seager/Bellinger $ to get a CF.
Mark P
8:31
A non-tender would be an awfully bold move, but something is clearly not right with Bellinger.  He'll still be due some kind of raise on his current $16.1MM salary, and the Dodgers have the payroll flexibility to give him another year to get on track, so I doubt he'll be non-tendered.

Now....a trade?  That kind of creativity might be more Andrew Friedman's speed.  I wonder what other teams might be willing to see if they can revive Bellinger, provided the Dodgers want to move him

I’ve tried asking this a lot during the deadline. Did teams during the deadline consider the possiblilty that service time changes could be in the future?
Mark P
8:33
I'm sure they had it in the back of their minds, but given that (at least publicly) it's very unclear what the next CBA will look like, a contender that has a chance to win now or in 2022 isn't going to hamper themselves by worrying about a scenario that might not happen

I'm looking forward to Ray pitching anywhere other than Toronto or Colorado. How likely do you think it is that he resigns with the Jays?
Mark P
8:34
I think the Jays have a decent chance of bringing him back.  They have the money available, they have the need for pitching, and Ray has been very complimentary about the Jays organization and their coaching staff's role in getting him on this new level of productivity.
PadTown
8:35
What approach do the Padres take this offseason to fix the starting pitching. They traded for 3 guys and are still running on fumes at the end of the season again.
Mark P
8:36
This is just my opinion, but the Padres should try to add at least a couple of veteran innings-eater types.  They were relying on only front-of-the-rotation arms or young guys, with nothing in between to fill the gaps and chew up innings when some of the other pitchers invariably got hurt.

8:36
Can MacKenzie Gore really be left off the Pad’s 40-man and exposed to the Rule 5?   That would be insane, wouldn’t it?
Mark P
8:37
It would.  They're not leaving him off the 40-man.
GLW
8:39
Bravos just signed Franco.  Where does he fit in that line up?
Mark P
8:39
The Braves' ideal scenario is "nowhere," since that would mean Freeman or Riley aren't available for some reason.  Franco seems like a pure depth signing.
Rich
8:40
Frank Schwindel…. Can he be real?  Or is just because pitchers don’t have a “book” on him yet?
Mark P
8:41
It's quite possible Frank The Tank is a flash in the pan....but it's been a very fun late-season storyline, especially for Cubs fans without much else to cheer for

When is the Winter meetings this year
Mark P
8:43
I don't believe an official date has been announced yet, or if any kind of in-person meetings will take place.  Should be the week of December 6, based on past years
Joshua
8:45
What type of prospect package would the Nats have to attach to Patrick Corbin in order for a team to trade for him and the remaining 3 years on his contact? Thanks.
Mark P
8:46
Three years/$82MM remaining for Corbin, so I don't really see any team eating most or even much of that whole thing.  Nor would I see the Nats (who don't have the deepest farm system anyway) moving any of their top-level youngsters just to shave some money off their future commitments.

This might be another "bad contract swap" scenario, more than the Nats attaching prospects.
Halo
8:47
Why I bother. You never respond to me. Any chance the Angels sign Correa and Scherzer?
Mark P
8:48
Today is your lucky day!  Correa is a maybe, Scherzer less so because the Angels have been traditionally (at least since CJ Wilson) hesitant to spend big money on starting pitching.

Is there any reason for me to watch?
Mark P
8:49
Kyler Murray only plays one day per week, so you need something to watch the other six days, right?

I know we have the best record in the AL but I'm legit worried about the pitching in a series. If we rely on relievers, won't the other team make adjustments the 3rd or 4th time seeing them? Any words of comfort you can offer for a nervous fan?
